It has been called to his attention that authorities at Chapman High School have noticed a mysterious phenomenon. It seems that there has been an annual disappearance of students from Chapman. The panther, determined to solve this intriguing mystery, is working undercover among the CHS students. Camera! When he fails to get a job on the faculty, the panther decides to revert to plan “B”. He finds, however, that registering as a student is no piece of cake. When at last he struggles through the jungle of red tape, he discovers that he has several of Chapman’s notoriously rugged courses. “Ah well,” he sighs, “With my superior intellect, I can manage Contemporary World Issues, Senior Biology, Advanced Composition, and Advanced Algebra and Trig, and still continue my investigation.” Is this a sign of possible trouble in store for our hero? Don’t leave to purchase your popcorn yet fans. The Best Is Yet To Come! It is with great difficulty that we attempt to express our true feelings for this remarkable lady. She has touched the life of every student that has gone through Chapman in the past few decades. One could share his dreams with the assurance that she would not only respect them, but do her best to help him obtain them. She, and the impact of her work here will linger as long as Chapman remains standing. What better way to express our love and admiration than to dedicate the 1978 Panorama to Vendetta M. Certainly, everyone at Chapman has been touched by her warmth and concern for those around her. Mrs. Edwards is retiring this year, and her absence will be felt by all. We will miss her eagerness to help as well as her ability to brighten an otherwise cloudy day. Mrs. Edward’s influence will be felt around Chapman for years to come. 18 FACULTY FEATURES 19 Thus the panther enters the campus life of Chapman High. Between classes and clubs, however, he might find himself lacking the time needed for his investigation. Let us hope that with the help of his cunning and keen perceptive nature, he will solve the mystery before getting hopelessly entangled in the never-ending web of activities. Our courageous defender of justice soon discovers that there is more to Chapman life than attending classes. As he reports to his superior officer by way of a mini walkie-talkie, “Chief, I definitely detect signs of a cover-up. The constant stream of activities around here is enough to confuse the shrewdest observer. I will relay any further developments. Over and out. Now to decide what club to join,” the panther muses. “Hmmm Student Council, Teens for Christ, Future Farmers of America . . . Aha . . . Drama Club. I’ve always possessed a flair for the arts.” 20 FEATURES As our hero is inconspicuously strolling down the hail, he sights a colorful poster. “Hmm, unless my unbelievably sharp sense of observation fails me, this poster has not been here before. Perhaps if I read it, I will discover a clue as to the whereabouts of those students. Aha! Miss Panorama Contest, eh? That may be an important link in this disappearance caper.” So the panther decides to drop in on the pageant, and do a little investigating. “Ah yes, attractive, talented, young women. Very Clever. One of them must have the information I need.” When, however, our sly sleuth tries to get backstage to question the girls, he is confronted with hysterical annual staffers, and nervous contestants. Groping for the door, he escapes from certain death among the chaos. “Definitely not an organized crime ring.” he mutters. “Not organized enough!” Where are the students going????? Will the dashing, dynamic defeater of crime ever solve this intriguing puzzle? We can only hope, and keep our eyes glued to the screen. FEATURES 21 There’s More To Come! As he passes the door to the gym, he notices a very loud noise. Hmm, noisy gymnasium, highly suspicious.” As he pecks into the crowded auditorium, he witnesses a bizarre ritual. Girls wearing short skirts and tennis shoes arc screaming and shaking fluffy orange, white, and blue objects. The panther notices some of his new friends sitting in the stands yelling and clapping their hands. Then he sees a group of tough, some what anxious looking young men with numbers painted on their shirts. “I say, this is curious.” the panther exclaims. “I think I'll interrogate one of those lovely, young ladies. “His curiosity over powers his usually cautious nature. “What are those stringy orange, white, and blue things’ young lady?” “They’re pom-poms,” she replies. “P-O-M-P-O- M-S, yea pom-poms!” “My word! What may I ask is taking place here?” 52 SPORTS SPORTS 53 “We’re having a pep rally. Give me a “P”, give me an “E”, give me a “P” .. . yea, pep rally!” When the panther recovers his hearing, he ventures once more to get the needed information. “For what reason are you having this ... er pep rally?” “Why, because tonight we’re having an important game. Beat those Bulldogs, beat those Bulldogs Go panthers!” The panther, deafened, though not entirely unimpressed by her enthusiasm, staggers from the gym. “1 certainly didn’t uncover any valuable clues, he admits with a defeated gesture. “At least I’ve discovered that sports seem to be an important part of this plot. We have witnessed another brilliant deduction by our valiant undercover agent. What startling observation will he make next? As we peak into one room, we see the devious detective, obviously struggling to copy an abundance of notes. The bell rings, and the panther mops his brow. “At last,” he sighs. “Now, what is this class meeting that everyone is talking about? I will attend and perhaps obtain a clue to the solution of this tangled affair.” He finds his way to the gymnasium and sets himself just in time to see a student student rise and call the meeting to order. “Very good!” he says approvingly, “Political experience at an early age is extremely wise. Hmm, the signs say Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.” After relating this bit of information to his boss over the mini walkie-talkie, he muses, “What can it mean. Chief?” 78 Class Class 79 “Those are the classes in a high school, you bumbling incompetent!” the chief roars. “Why Chief, if I didn’t know better, I would say you were becoming as adept in the art of deduction as I am.” The panther replies. “Over and out.” The Chief dismisses him with a snort. “Oh my, if 1 don’ hurry I’ll be tardy for my next class. Hmm Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, eh? Well, if those are all the classes here at Chapman where do you go when you complete the senior class? Perhaps.” he wonders with a sudden understanding, “perhaps they go back and start all over again. We are once more awed by the brilliance of this mastermind. Nevertheless, we become increasingly aware that this case has kept our hero baffled longer than any before it. Will he ever solve it? The answer lies in the immediate future. Box I $. Campobcllo The panther is slumped dejectedly on the bleachers. It is late May and the birds arc singing their cheerful melodies. The defender of truth, however, has experienced his first defeat. “Failure,” he moans, “is such a depressing word. Who would ever have thought that 1, the invincible investigator, would ever fail to discover the answer to an important mystery?” He mutters disappointedly to himself and the unsympathetic birds. Suddenly, he hears voices. He turns to see a great crowd entering the stadium, and sitting solemnly in the bleachers. “Probably some program related to the school.” he sighs, and decides to stay for lack of anything else to do. When everyone has arrived, and the crowd settles, a speaker rises and addresses the audience. He speaks of achievement and a feeling of pride. The speech is obviously centered upon a certain group of people. Soon the panther notices the arrival of some new guests. They all wear dark caps and gowns. Suddenly, our hero recognizes the new arrivals as members of the senior class at Chapman. He experiences a mounted feeling of excitement. He watches as they are given a rolled up paper which they seem to regard as cherished items. “Congratulations to the graduating class of 1978!” the speaker declares. “Graduating class, that’s it!” The panther shouts only to be silenced by indignant parents. “I've solved the mystery of the missing students!” he exclaims, now in a high state of ectasy. “They graduate and go on to better opportunities and more fulfilling lives. Of course, with my expertise in the field of investigation, I was confident that I would soon discover the solution to this complicated problem.” Then, our hero walks off into the sunset, reassured of his capabilities, and our mystery is solved. We can be certain, however, that someday we will once again need the services of that gallant conquistader of evil. Until then . . . Classes 145 “Whenever We Remember . . . ” On an Indian summer night in August, the students of Chapman High suffered a great loss. As the result of a tragic accident, we were deprived of a friend who was dear to all of us. Jerry Shockley will be remembered by his many friends for his friendly smile and ever-present sense of humor. Everyone will miss Jerry and his willingness to help a friend. We will also miss the special way he had of brightening up an occasional dreary day. 146 Mcmorial ADS 147 A really ADVANCED comp, class loops, loops, loops ... 20 minute themes . . . ‘'fleshly Myrtle . . . TC 166 OUR SPONSORS This seems to be a year for losses. Not mere superficial losses in sports or contests, but deep, personal, and painful losses. Among the most tragic blows dealt us was the death of Dwayne Eric Lynch. As a result of Dwayne’s death Chapman lost a dear friend and brother. When the pain finally subsides, we will be thankful for the tender memories.,We will never forget the friendly face that seemed to stand out in any crowd, nor the faces that appeared to light up when touched by his smile. He seemed to radiate affection, cheerfulness, and warmth. Life is very short and death is unpredictable. We should take a lesson from Dwayne’s life. If we do we will extract the precious and significant things, and savor each priceless moment. We will discover in doing so that the brevity of Dwayne’s life is far outweighed by the extent to which he enjoyed living. 168 MEMORIAL
