Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1976 volume:

“AMERICA IS A TUNE. IT MUST BE SUNG TOGETHER.” GERALD STANLEY KEYS Panorama 1976 Vol XXII Chapman High School Inman, South’Carolina Theme 1 Listen. It is a long tune. Complicated at times ... an ancient tune evolving from centuries of composition. Listen. It is a rugged tune. It has survived the tests of time. It is a good tune. 2 Theme t began in the hearts and minds of common men. The tune was a dream ... a dream of freedom, land, peace, dignity, growing maturity. 1 0 ' X [if • ft V sS ft J 1 I Vi M H vl t t, Existence would be intolerable if we were never to dream. The dream became so strong words were added But words were not enough . . “Everything that is right or reasonable bleeds for separation. The blood of the slain, the weeping voice of nature cries ‘tis time to part’.” — Thomas Paine In CONGRESS. Jvly 4. ijjs. imammouT fffaration _______State? of Xnwrica. The notes of revolution were bold, harsh sounding to the ear, confused, unsure, but . . . Theme 3 The tempo at times, was fast. The Louisiana Purchase, immigrants moving West, gold in California, new bridges, canals — New inventions, the pony express, telegraph, and oh yes the “Iron Horse” moved the beginning notes quickly on . . . 4 Theme WAS SD = • m At times the rhythm slowed almost to a hum. Farmers settled, lived, worked, and died — quietly. Theme 5 6 The me August 21, 1975 at the same time I stuffed the last spoonful of Captain Crunch (my little sister's cereal-not mine) into my mouth. The horn of the bus. !!? It happens every time I'm late . . . the bus comes early. 1 made it and settled down into my seat. School-my last year. Then it hit me-I'm The Big Senior! Whew! I thought about that first day of school twelve years ago. 1st grade. I cried, Mom cried, the teacher cried, but I made it. Yep. I ley what's it going to be like this year? The summer went by so fast. Peach shed. Myrtle Beach, School. I thought of all those piles of homework ahead of me. Is Senior biology as hard as I've heard? Wonder if I can change my schedule and get early dismassal. I thought I had just fallen asleep, only to be awakened by the pesty tinkering of the alarm clock. I clicked it off, still mostly asleep, and rolled over. Then it hit me way deep down in the pit of my stomach . . today was the first day of school! I looked at the clock again. Fifteen minutes to make it! I dressed on the way to the kitchen and finished the job of tucking my shirt tail in 8 Theme Just them Chapman came into view. Every time 1 see the school, butterflies seem to fill my stomach. Everyone forgot those speed breakers and we bounced all over the bus. The bus finally stopped and we got out. Reluctantly-very reluc- tantly. I met some of the guys on the football bleachers. We have hung out there ever since we were freshmen. It was still that cool part of morning. We didn’t talk a whole lot. Wc just kinda sat and stared ourselves to sleep as we looked to the grassy field of dew. I guess we were all thinking those kinda private thoughts about school, teachers, friends, grade, the future . . . What's out there for us in the future. The bell rang for homeroom. The official opening of Chap- man's tune. My feet didn't want to go-but I knew I had to. I wondered how much I'd do, if I didn't have to? Knowing Mrs. Waters she's going to want an excuse for the last three months. Theme 9 October 9, 1975. . . The Year of the Panther . .. The Year of Pie! ... Splat! Man . . . what a pep rally ... I mean it was really good for a change. We actually had SPIRIT. I can't believe it last week Mr. Miller got the pie in the face-today was Walkowicz' turn. SMACK-1 mean Jon creamed him! You gotta hand it to Mr. Miller and Mr. Walk- owicz, that took guts! I wonder who's going to get it next. The spirit's alot better this year. Everything's a little bet- ter around school. Of course some of the same people a- round here wouldn't look ex- cited if a Mack truck ran over their big toe and maybe even their whole foot. Oh well! I’m going to the game tonight. ■Mil 10 Theme LATER: Big Chief, little chief, Indian Squaw, Who in the ... Man, the stands were packed tonight. Man, I don't see how the band does it week after week. My little sister's got a crush on Dean Brown. Her heart skips a beat everytime he beats that drum. I really felt good. You should have seen Bennie run! Our whole team was ready. Dy-no-mite! The game was great! Most everyone seemed to be giving more of themselves tonight. I yelled till I was red in the face. It was like there was this steady, sure tune working in everybody; players, cheerleaders, blacks, whites, young, old. There was this harmony thing-Chapman was together. Makes you feel great. Theme 11 it to a pig. But the main rea- son I regretted this class was the fact that lunch was next. December 19, 1975 . . . Made it to Christmas va- cation. School was kind of fun today. I mean everybody felt good. Not just cause we were getting out although I need a rest. It's just that Christmas makes you want to care about someone else, makes you want to show you love them, makes you want to believe this old world has some hope. You know I don’t even care if I get anything this year. Just to be with my family, (even my sister), go to church for the candle lighting and then sit back and share the warmness everyone has - Life's not all bad . . . I’ve been doing some thinking about God, lately, Jesus-Baby, Man, Savior. I think He's real. He cares. Way deep down inside I have a peace. November 12, 1975 . . . My homeroom teacher asked how many people were eating lunch, and only three said they were. Huh! I know better, cause hamburgers were on the menu. At lunch I saw some freshmen lined up as far as Mrs. Culbreth's room. I pity underclassmen. I remember the hassle in years past, but I think it’s worse this year. Those fresh- men take alot. When I was a freshman somebody told me they put exlax in the chocolate pudding. Dumb me ... I be- lieved it. Course now, I still wonder with my erudite (learned that word in Miss Smith's class-English II) mind- how in the heck do they get vitamin C in cream po- tatoes? They must squeeze oranges in them or something. Yesterday, it killed me won- dering what shepard's pie was. It turned out to be pretty good though. December 4, 1975 . . . The day was supposed to be great. My horiscope read, Today is a time to do some- thing you've wanted to do for a long time”. I decided the something” I've wanted to do for a long time was NOT do my classwork. I figured I'd just listen today. First period was annual class. It was hec- tic. Susan couldn't find the cropping ruler. Mike was cracking jokes and trying to think up some dumb things for copy. Kathy couldn't figure out where her film was. Everyone was screaming Ms. Smith! Ms. Smith . . . and she was pulling her hair out. Why does anyone ever want to be a teacher?! I just sat and watched the whole mess. Second period I went to Typing I. It was really ironic (Picked that word up with McClain-English III!) how much trouble everyone was having. How do you curve your fingers over these keys? How come I always hit an '8' Caps are impossible! I cheat and look at my hands. This one guy today just sat through most of the class stunned. I think he's either gping to drop this class or break down and cry. One speedster typed 40 words a minute with only 39 mistakes. And would you believe since I goofed around during class, she takes the papers up? Typ- ing's for girls anyway! I know, I know. I'm a male chauvinist -What’s it to you? In chemistry, as soon as the bell rang Mrs. Cooper asked to name the first 45 chemical formula's that came to mind. I told her everything I knew. C-carbon, H-Hydro- gen, and Z-Zinc . I had to go down the alphabet to get them. Then we started talk of the fetal pig. She asked the class what fetal meant. Answer- It's a hog that didn't make 12 Theme January 7,1976 ... I got the after Christinas blahs . I cut fifth period to- day and layed out in the gym. I watched the girls P. E. class Fun. I don't really know why I did it. Sometimes I can't figure out myself out. Basket- ball is coming up. Can’t wait. I saw Miss Brewer shooting baskets. You know, I like that lady ... I Mean she really cares about this place and her students. Maybe that's why they were state champs last year. I guess some teachers do care. February 11, 1976 . . . illlt. licL I “ uiiangea pnysicauy, ually, and most important, socially. We've overcome our parents prejudices. Sure there are difference and there always will be personality conflicts, but they're not based on just the trivial mat- ter of skin color. It's like Chapman is a tune, it must be sung together. March 19, Why is it every teacher in this school waits til Friday, the last day of school in the nine weeks, to give a test? I have a test in every subject and Mrs. Waters topped it all off with a big homework as- signment. My English term paper is due today, and my darling little sister ripped off my French book. I even skipped lunch today and stud- ied the whole period in the li- brary. My friends think I've come down with some rare tropical disease or something. Last year I did not even know where the library was, yet a- lone who Mrs. Hall was. I know now! Man I gotta grad- Black History Week. Man, you'd think it was National Skip Day. Miss Moore and our class really got into a good discussion of this whole race thing. We all remembered the first days of integration when we just stared at each other in the classroom and wondered what the other was really like. Like they say, We've come a long way, baby! Blacks- Whites-we've grown from children to adults . . . we've Theme 13 DEDICATION Through your years of dedicated service to the students of Chapman High you have become known as a guide, and advisor, and most of all a friend. You have shown us your devotion through your continuous efforts to make these years memorable to each student. We realize that you have dedi- cated your time and talents to us. Therefore we the Senior Class proudly dedicate the 1976 Panorama to Coach Ronnie i 1 cnn 14 Theme IN MEMORY OF SCOTT HOWARD GIDDINGS NOV. 8, 1958 - FEB. 20, 1975 Freebird” was a favorite song of Scott's and the deepness of the meaning of this song describes Scott as we think of him now. Even though Scott no longer walks among us on this earth, we still feel his pres- cence around us. His memory will always linger near us as we remember him, think of him, and love him. If I Leave Here Tomorrow Would You Still Remember Me? For I Must Be Traveling On Now, Cause There's Too Many Places I've Got to See. But If I Stayed Here With You Girl, Things Just Couldn't Be The Same. Cause I’m As Free As A Bird Now, And This Bird You Cannot Change. Lord Knows I Can't Change. Bye, Bye Baby, It's Been A Sweet Love, Though This Feeling I Can't Change But Please Don't Take It So Badly Cause The Lord Knows I'm To Blame. But If I Stayed Here With You, Girl, Things Just Couldn't Be The Same. Cause I’m As Free As A Bird Now, And This Bird You Cannot Change. And This Bird You Cannot Change. Lord Knows, I Can't Change. Lord Help Me, I Can’t Change. Theme 15 April I, 1976 . . Everybody, and I mean everybody, is in a rotten mood. April 4, 1976 You know, it seems like I’ll never get out of school. I can’t stand this waiting. I was caught looking out the window in Mrs. Wingo's room during class. I was just thinking about stuff. . . I guess it's spring fever. Mrs. Wingo had to remind me twice, then she warned me with a share of stock. I guess I de- served it. I don't have any con- trol of my thoughts. I was late for two classes today. The rea- son I was late was because of waiting in those long lines for a drink of water. The air-con- ditioning is broken again, hah- hah! I wonder when yearbooks are coming? Junior-Senior's coming up and I'm broke. May 22, 1976 My nerves are killing me. Most of my friends are afraid of the stage and practice, but after Mrs. Moore's class I’m afraid I may be coming back next year. I think my average is 70 with the final quarter test coming up. June 1, 1976 . The previous week flew by. All that miserable practice paid off. When I walked down the hall to get into my Marching group I got this weird foolish feeling. Nobody was clowning June 1, Cont. around tonight. Chapman looked different, the halls, the class- rooms, empty desks, the teachers. I suddenly knew why I was sad. Part of me was go- ing to be left here. There was a part of me I couldn’t take with me when I graduated. Part of me will always be at Chapman. All of this was going through my mind when I heard them call a few names before mine. Butterflies filled my stomach and I had a touch of insecurity. Just then, while still on stage, - I managed to get a quick glimpse of my parents. I could spot a few falling tears of joy on my mother’s cheek as she sternly applauded for me. I think I’m always going to re- member my mother as she was then. It was only a few seconds of reality . . . but I wanted to flood my mind with memories of how they helped me through the ups and downs of getting an education and make these mem- ories last forever. Twelve years of schooling over just like that. Zap, what do you have for all the hard work? A diploma. But I've got more than a diploma. I have a tune in my head. You see Chapman, like America, is a tune. Our edu- cation came as we sung the tune together. In the class rooms, halls, on the field, black, white. There were high notes, low notes, and we some- times sang in parts. Sometimes the beat was fast, other times we let it drag but the point is, we sang it together! . . . and I'll always have the tune. 16 Theme OUR CONDUCTORS . . . Many Times Our “Audience” Only See Our Faded Jeans, Tennis Shoes, 45.00 Blouses, and Our Shaggy Heads and Turquoise Jewelry. But Our Conductors Somehow Are Able to Look Beyond the Mundane Trappings to See Our True Selves . . Our Talents, Our Needs, Our Strengths, Our Weaknesses. Together We Work, Al- though Not Always in Harmony, to Somehow Create a Tune. A Tune We Remember Many Years Into the Future. Features are an important factor at CHS. The school seems to thrive on features because these activities seem to break the spell cast by the everyday routine. Features totally revolve around students and faculty. Music also contains this element of change. It is called rhythm. Music depends on rhythm to change the emotional state of the listener. Sometimes the rhythm may be andante, much like the first day of school, creeping upon us ... or allegro speeding by like a Friday afternoon. If we work together, we are assured of a melodic rhythm weaving itself through out life at Chapman. Features Division Page 53 54 Features Elegance . . . Contest . . . Football game . . . Every note at Chapman is orchestrated by the moods, the minds, and motivation of this unique collection of individuals. Like the blend of strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion to form a euphony of pleasing sounds. Chapman students create the tune” with it's high notes, and law, with fate, and pianissimo, staccato, and legato, andonte and allegro, in the classrooms, the library, and the sports field, the tune of Chap- man is sung. It is, in the last analysis, a good tune, a very good tune, . . . because it is sung together. 87 Class Division Pg.
