Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1972 volume:

FOREWORD We, the staff of the 1972 Panorama, present this, our book, to the student body of Chapman High School. We hope that it will help each student to recapture moments of the past year and hold them fondly within their memories. For it is because of each individual student that the book became a reality instead of a train of thought. We have tried to mold the Panorama into a book that every student of Chapman could be proud of. For our ideas and memories of Chapman are the small things such as being last in the lunch line and late for class. These things form the comradeship we have, the jovial ones and the cross ones, the sociable and the withdrawn, all joined together in a united effort. Different through our natures, we meet for a common purpose, share common problems and pursue common goals. The strange and wonderful bond of a job to be done together makes us kin. We are not “one big happy family yet a family, nonetheless. We rejoice like a family, squabble like a family, have little feuds and alliances like a family. We try to help each other, and are genuinely concerned about each other. There is an affection between us that only people who learn together can understand. And sometimes when the day is over and we are parting to go our separate ways, wonder fills us at all these people we have come to know and love through our education. They have added something priceless to our lives. So as we turn “our book over to you. realizing that it is no longer ours but yours, we hope that you will accept it with the respect and understanding which molded it into the 1972 Panorama. Educators should be chosen not merely for their special qualifications, but more for their personality and their character, because we teach more by what we are than by what we teach.” 6 William James Durant In Memoriam Mrs. Helen T. Bruce Mrs. Bruce, was a legend in the halls of Chapman High School. In watching her teach, the close observer soon discovered that her task was not to implant facts but to place the subject to be learned in front of the learner and, through sympathy, emotion, imagination, and patience, to awaken in the learner the restless drive for answers and insights which enlarged the personal life and gave it meaning. 8 Administration H. Piey started out at a determined pace, were slowed down by a few defeats, but always kept in mind their goal. After winning a playoff against Koiling Springs to gain the regular season Conference Championship and placing Debbie Lake, Kathy Fowler and Paulette Porter on the All-C'onference Team, the girls team, under the guidance of their Coach, Miss Marian Brewer, went on to capture the Region II Peach Blossom AAA Championship Title. Chapman placed four girls on the All-Tournament Team, Kathy Fowler. Paula Davenport, and Paulette Porter with Debbie Lake chosen as the tournament's “Most Valuable Player ’. After obtaining their first goal the Pai theietles now look onward to a higher goal as they nuke plans to represent the Peach Blossom AAA Conference in the Upper State ( ompetition. The Panthers ended the season with a 15-H record. They were coached by Gene Stallard. Much hard work went into the Panther team, on both the players’ and the coach's part. In the Annual Peach Capitol Invitational Tournament the Panthers were runners-up to the Championship, missing the title by two points. Three Panthers held positions on the All Tournament Team: Bruce Kheelon and Eddie Price with Anthony Mabry taking the “Most Valuable Player” Award. Eddie Price and Bruce Kheelon were mimed to the All-Conference Team. In the Region II Peach Blossom AAA Conference Tournament. Bruce Kheelon and Anthony Mabry were chosen as members of the All-Tournament Team. The Panthers are a team with determination and confidence: although they did not rank first in the Conference, we. the Chapman students are just as proud of their efforts and their achievements. ABRAHAM LINCOLN 91 IN MEMORIAM THOMAS FREDRICK COOPER He was so young, God ... So young and strong and filled with promise ... So vital, so radiant, giving so much joy wherever he went... He was so brilliant ... On this one boy you lavished so many talents that could have enriched your world ... He had already received so many honors, and there were so many more to come. Why, then? In our agony we ask, why him? Why not someone less gifted? Someone less good? some hop-head, rioter, thief, brute, hood? Yet we know, even as we demand what seems to us a rational answer, that we are only intensifying our grief. Plunging deeper into the blind and endless place where all hope is gone. A dark lost place where our own gifts will be wasted and ruin replace the goodness he brought and wished for us. Instead, let us thank you for the marvel that this boy was. That we can say good-bye to him without shame or regret, rejoicing in the blessed years he was given to us. Knowing that his bright young life, his many gifts, have not truly been stilled or wasted, only lifted to a higher level where the rest of us can’t follow yet. Separation? Maybe. Loss? Never. For his spirit will be with us always. And when we meet him again we will be even more proud to call him a friend. 92 Senior Class Officers Ray Cooper - President Cralg CoUins _ Vi£e Presldent ■ Carolyn Pack - Treasurer Senior Homeroom Officers Student Council Representatives: Vicki Hembree, Cyndy Ramsey. It is true that many times we wondered how much later, but deep within our hearts we knew it would come with time. We approached the batter's box, a little nervous, but with a lot of determination. The determination paid off — before we knew it , we were firmly planted on first base. As our leaders we had President — Ray Cooper, Vice President — Mike Elliott, Treasurer — Cindi Giddings, Secretary — Vicki Hembree, and Reporter-Historian — Wofford O'Sullivan. In May of 1968, the Freshman Class of Bethune High School was divided into parts, one of which was to attend Chapman and the other to attend Bethune. Since after our freshman year we were all joined into one class at Chapman, we feel that the history made by the part of the class that stayed at Bethune should be recorded with the Class of 72's history. The Freshman Class Officers at Bethune were: President — Jacob Middleton, Vice President — Lorraine Peterson, Secretary — Deida Maxton, Assistant Secretary — Portia Johnson, and Treasurer — Lizzie Staggs. Freshman Cheerleaders Bobbie Fleming - Captain, Renee Andrews, Cyndy Ramsey. Cindi Giddings and Pam Wimberly helped to lift our spirits here at Chapman, while at Bethune Portia Johnson represented the freshmen on the cheerleading squad. Ray Cooper stood tall for the freshmen on the Varsity Football Team. While the Freshman Team was made up of Danny Hyleman, Ricky Erskine, Mike Elliott, Mike McClure, Dale Culbreth, Bruce Woodfin, Ricky Howell, Jerry Steadman, Reggie Foster, Stanley Hipp, Ricky Tucker, Henry Gramling and Roger Hollifield. Cindi Giddings, Carolyn Burrell, Anita Cooper, Cheri Hickman, Connie Carson, and Sandra Bannister were Girl's Varsity Basketball Players. Marilyn Penson and Julia Drummond served on the Bethune Team. The Boy's Freshman Basketball Team consisted of: Tommy Jackson, Lewis Jennings, Louis Jackson, Ronnie Durrah, Ray Cooper, Mike Elliott, Ricky Howell, Ricky Tucker, Chuck Bohon, Calvin Rookard, Bill Shaw, Tommy Cooper, Eddie Price, Jerry • o Steadman and Mark Cooke. Tommy Nicholson, Henry Gramling, Reggie Foster, Doug Wilkins, Carl Berry and Ricky Howell added strength to the Cross Country Team. Bobbie Fleming held the title Miss Freshman. Running Track for the Freshmen were: Carl Berry, Reggie Foster, Mike Elliott, Ricky Howell, Roger Goodwin and Danny Hyleman. Ray Cooper and Eddie Price were the Freshman Players on the Baseball Team, with James Murriel and Calvin Rookard on the Bethune Team. The Freshman members of the Band of Gold were: Karen Wilson, Debra Kimmons, Wanda Burrell and Kay Wilds. As we reach our second base, the Sophomore Class Officers were: President — Ray Cooper, Vice President - Pam Wimberly, Secretary — Ricky Howell, Treasurer — Jane Strother, and Reporter-Historian — Eddie Price. Vance Greene, Ray Cooper, Ricky Howell, Mike Elliott, Frank Hall and Dale Culbreth were Varsity Football Players. The Junior Varsity Team was made of Danny Hyleman, Eston Graham, Carl Berry, Eddie Price, Ricky Tucker and Reggie Foster. Tommy Nicholson, Henry Gramling, Reggie Foster, Doug Wilkins, Carl Berry and Ricky Howell were members of the Cross Country Team. Nellie Cates, Julia Drummond and Debbie Price helped the Vartity Basketball Team. Junior Varsity Basketball Players were: Ricky Howell, Eddie Price, Tommy Cooper, Ray Cooper, Mike Elliott, Jerry Steadman, Louis Jackson, Wofford O'Sullivan, Chuck Bohon, Mark Cooke and Lewis Jennings. Pam Wimberly and Bobbie Fleming helped raise the spirit on the Varsity Cheerleader Squad. Junior Varsity Cheerleaders were Carolyn Pack, Darlene Johnson, Renee Andrews, Jane Strother and Captain - Sandra Stevens. Reggie Foster, Carl Berry, Henry Gramling, Roger Goodwin, Ricky Howell, Mike Elliott, Dale Culbreth, Wofford O'Sullivan and Danny Hyleman were the sophomores on the Track Team. Carolyn Burrell and Wanda Burrell were Miss Panorama Contestants. Members of the Band of Gold were Wanda Burrell, Karen Wilson and Cindy Hart with Debra Kimmons and Kay Wilds as Majorettes. Cindi Giddings held the title of Miss Sophomore. In February, of our Sophomore year. Tommy Cooper, one of our classmates, was involved in an automobile accident, which took his life. Tommy was an active member of our class. His death left us all with sorrow and disbelief. Although he is not with us physically, anymore, this does not stop him from living on within our memories. Finally we reached third base. Our Junior Class Officers were: President - Ray Cooper, Vice-President - Pam Wimberly, 120 Senior Class History Secretary - Carolyn Pack, Treasurer - Ricky Howell and Reporter Historian — Eddie Price. Mark Cooke was elected Vice-President of the student body and Bobbie Fleming was elected as Secretary. We had now reached home base. We realized that this was the beginning of the end. The Senior Class Officers were: President — Ray Cooper, Vice President - Craig Collins, Secretary — Carolyn Burrell, Treasurer — Carolyn Pack, Reporter-Historians - Mary Helen Smith and Pam Wimberly.
