Because of her untiring interest in each of her students, she has earned a warm place in their hearts. As an expression of our grati- tude for her kind service, we proudly dedicate the 1970 Pano- rama to Mrs. Helen T. Bruce. 4 MEMORIA M V I hornas Frederick Cooper, an honor student at Chapman High School, died February 12, 1970. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Cooper. He contributed much to Chapman during the year and a half he attended and Tommy could always be depended on by his classmates and teachers. He was an inquisitive person, always wanting to know the an- swers and facts, and he had a depth of understanding envied by many. Tommy will always be remembered by everyone who knew and admired him. 5 com£ to talk ujitfi you ayain . . . 7 i ' K i- §, ? • :::: fSfi ; !=i IVasaaaaaaa ■■■■■■■■■ •f«f «■?!«■? • I 1||||.10 '|4U '•mi M ««•••% .” it ««I ' 111 i ll • ■■I «■■■a «■■■a aian ■■■■■a ■■■■■a «■■■■■a 9 SOO fieopLe, maybe, more. . . . cz frui in tL naU. Learning our way around was our first major problem. With few mistakes we soon learned our way like veteran members of C.H.S. We made new friends and all of us made up the Freshman Class of Chapman High School. Our class officers were President, Patsy Hammett; Vice-President, Brad Johnson; Secretary, Alice Trout; Treasurer, Kaye Scruggs; and Reporter, Dale Peeler. Homeroom presidents were: Bobby Miller, Marilyn Giddings, Butch Howard, Ladson Berry, Doris Stallings, Phillip Cooley. Sponsors were: Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. H. Edwards, Mrs. Viehman, Mrs. West, Miss Linn. Lynn Gains was a Homecoming Queen Contestant. Doris Stallings was elected Miss Freshman. Kenny Burrell, Marilyn Giddings, Nancy Collins, Martha Dorman, Patsy Hammett, Judy Stephens, Dianne Ravan, and Barbara Gregory fought for our basketball team and running for our track team was Ken Burrell, Steve Schockley, Rodney Hipp, Billy Rhinehart, Joe Steadman, and Charles Atkins. Nancy Pace helped cheer our teams. As we entered our Sophomore year, we were upper-underclassmen. Our class officers were: President, Doris Stallings; Vice-President, Alice Trout; Secretary, Marilyn Giddings; Treasurer, Judy Stephens; and Reporter, Bobby Miller. Homeroom Presidents were: Joe Steadman, Ginger Trull, Lynn Gains, Sherry McDowell, Julie Bishop and Lee Cleveland. Sponsors were Mrs. Belcher, Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. H. Edwards, Miss Linn, Mr. Pack and Mr. Yeager. The Miss Sophomore' Title was bestowed upon Alice Trout. Nancy Skinner was crowned Miss Panorama and Alice Trout was Valentine Queen. Homecoming Contestants were Jane Burnette, Nancy Skinner, Kaye Scruggs, and Lynn Gaines. Bobby Miller, Kaye Boyter, Keith Lancaster, Darlene Foster, Pat Cochrum and Doug Wolf worked on our school paper. Joining Ken Burrell was Dennis Raines on the boy's varsity basketball team. The girls were Martha Dorman, Dianne Ravan, Barbara Gregory, Patsy Hammett, and Marilyn Giddings was manager. Our football heroes were Charles Atkins, Allen Brady, Terry Parris, Dennis Raines, David Tucker, Joe Steadman, Ken Burrell, Mike Stepp, and Randy Cambell. Cheering was done by Candy Andrews, Nancy Pace, and Kaye Scruggs. Our track team was led by Ken Burrell, Terry Parris, Ladson Berry, Doug Wolf, Joe Steadman, Billy Rinehart, Dennis Raines, Kenny Jamison, and David Tucker. Finally we became upper classmen! Officers were: Philip Cooley, President; Margaret Wingo, Vice-President; Jane Burnette, Secretary; Kaye Boyter, Treasurer; and Reporter, Alice Trout. Sponsors were: Mrs. Belcher, Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. H. Edwards, Mr. Hart, Mr. Pack, Mr. Yeager. Class beauty was Gail Davis. Candy Andrews was Crowned Miss Panorama and Lee Cleveland was first runner-up. Margaret Wingo was Crowned Homecoming Queen. We were represented by approximately twenty Junior Marshals, and Furman Scholars were Martha Dorman, Phillip Cooley, Ann Copeland, and Ladson Berry. History was made when ours was the first Junior Class to receive Class Rings. Seniors at last! The year we've been waiting for ever since we entered kindergarten. Class officers were: President, Joe Steadman; Vice-President, Doris Stallings; Secretary, Patsy Hammett; Treasurer, Lee Cleveland; and Reporter, Bobby Miller. Homeroom Presidents were: Gail Clayton, Rose Greenway, Kaye Scruggs, Sherry McDowell, Lynn Gaines, Nancy Pace, and Jane Burnette. Patsy Hammett was selected 1969-1970 Homecoming Queen and Alice Trout was picked as Maid of Honor. Contestants for Miss Panorama were: Lynn Gaines, Kaye Scruggs, and Lois Henson. Vida McGraw was chosen 2nd runnerup, and Margaret Wingo was selected 1st runnerup. Brenda Pruitt was awarded the title Miss Senior, and Julie Bishop served as an editor of the annual. In our dreams we drift back to the days we've spent at Chapman, and we smile ... But we look to the future with the spirit and strength that we've achieved at Chapman. Our last hope as seniors is that all underclassmen will learn to respect and love this school as we have done, and give her nothing less than your best... JOYFULLY WE TELL OF HER GLORY AND HER HONOR, DEAR OLE' CHAPMAN, HAIL! 27 cH m Presidents: Bobby Miller, Dale Peeler, Terry Paris, Sammy Davis. Not Pictured: Otis Hightower, Benny Davis. Danny Gosnell grabs a touchdown pass at homecoming against Carolina. Coach Curtis Powell and his staff guided the Panthers to their best season in three years. Greatness doesn't mean winning every game, for there is more to greatness than victory. The squad continually showed sportsmanship and hustle from August’s 100 degree heat to November's cold rain. Fine team effort can be seen in our victories over Liberty and Carolina. In the Liberty game, our defense, led by linebacker Joe Steadman, pulled through when it had to by stopping Liberty's attempt for the go-ahead two-point conver- sion in the Final quarter. In the homecoming victory over Carolina, the offense, guided by quarterbacks Tim Pope and Mike Elliott, piled up 162 yds. and 19 points, while the defense limited the opponents to 30 yards and 2 points. The loss of two lettermen halfbacks. Kenny Burrell and David Smith due to injuries, made the going rough in the last few games, but the sophomores Filled the vacancies to make the contest close and at the same time gained valuable experience. Besides the Fine team effort, several individuals stood out. Joe Steadman topped the seasons defensive statistics with 129 tackles recorded in nine games. Other lop performers included cornerback Mike Elliott, tackles Ray Cooper and John Small, and guard Otis Hightower. In six games played before being injured, David Smith led the offensive department with 225 yards rushing and 315 on kick-off returns. Kenny Burrell, Mike Elliott, and Danny Gosnell also carried for valuable yards. Jimmy Cudd caught seven passes for 104 yards, fol- lowed by Ernie Morrow with 6 receptions and 53 yards. Players recognized by trophies are: Most loyal substitute - Warren O'Sullivan, best sport Otis Hightower, most valuable player - Joe Steadman. Our ten graduating seniors obviously can't be back next year, but with 11 returning juniors and 22 returning sopho- mores, the season proves to be even more successful!
