Not this class, the one bound to graduate in ’64. From the start we were meant to be a class Chapman High School would never forget. Here’s how we did it .. . Leading us through our Freshman year with the help of our beloved sponsors, Mrs. Culbreth, Mrs. Bruce and Mr. Austell, our class officers: Jimmie Pace, president; Wayne Grigg, vice-president; Barbara Culbreth, secretary; Carol Ann Jackson, treasurer; Georgia Nodine, reporter. Home- room presidents were Randy Craig, Barbara Culbreth, Peachie Sloan, Georgia Nodine, Mark Hibbard, and Wayne Grigg. The Band of Gold climaxed an eventful year by per- forming at the Kentucky Derby, and our boys’ basket- ball team brought to Chapman the Upper State Con- ference Runner-Up trophy. Wayne Anderson and Trudy Mathis were selected our “Pleasing Personalities”, and Marsha Graham “Miss Freshman”. Trudy and Irma Biber were our contributions to the cheering squad. And, all too soon our first, bewildering year at Chap- man High came to a close. Chosen to lead our sophomore class were: Gary Back- well, president; Freida Cudd, vice-president; Edward Raines, secretary; Wayne Anderson, treasurer; Benny Fulbright, reporter. Homeroom presidents were Freida Cudd, Peachie Sloan, Carolyn Bailey, Joy Culbreth, Dianne Dollar, and Johnny Jackson. The Band of Gold marched in glory as they played at the International Azalea Festival, Norfolk, Virginia. Joy Culbreth was elected Miss Sophomore” and Carol Ann Jackson joined Trudy Mathis to represent our class as cheerleaders for the remainder of our high school career. Wayne Anderson, Edward Raines, Wayne Hyder. Ran- dy Craig, Jimmy Caldwell. Bill Steadman, and Nor- man Belcher aided the Purple Panthers in putting that ball on the line. Then we were ready to try our luck as juniors. The class activities were capably handled by James Reese, president; Dianne Spencer, vice-president; Peggy Ful- bright, secretary; Nancy Bruce, treasurer; and Gary Blackwell, reporter. Homeroom presidents were Jimmy Caldwell, Jennie Smith, Lester Cooper. Judi Bishop, and Wayne Ander- son. The more dramatic-minded juniors presented Mary Chase's delightful comedy, “Harvey” under the direc- tion of Mr. Frank Austell. The cast included Camille Burton, Karen Seay, Vaden McMillin, Judy Elliott. Lib- by Bonham. Trudy Mathis, Ronnie Crenshaw, Bill Sapp, Mike Culp, Mary Browne, Johnny Jackson, and Richard Davis. The top scholars in the class were rewarded for hard work by being selected to serve as Junior Marshals. Camille Burton and Karen Seay were head marshals. Others serving with them were Bob Martin, Virginia Allgood, Johnny Jackson, Estelle McArthur, Richard Davis, Anna Margaret Hammett, Susan Redfeam, Jen- nie Smith, Nancy Bruce, Jerry Foster, Vaden McMil- lin, Lester Cooper and Sybil Fain. Chapman’s first Junior Miss High Miss was our own Dorothy Morris. Dorothy also served as vice-president of the Student Council, and Jennie Smith as treasurer. Our class was well represented by beauties also: Nancy Bruce was “Miss Junior” and Ruth Foster was crowned Homecoming Queen. The band honored us again by marching in the Apple Festival in Winchester, Virginia. The boys basketball team brought fame and honor to Chapman High by winning the Runner-Up trophy for State Championship. Stanley Melton and Bill Cooper joined last year’s players on the gridiron. The day had come at last—August 28, 1963. We had reached the summit of public school career and we were finally the “big wheels” at Chapman High. To guide us through the year of 1963-64, we chose as our leaders: Peggy Fulbright, president; Gap Blackwell, vice-president; Nancy Bruce, secretary; Bill Steadman, treasurer; Camille Burton, reporter. Homeroom presidents, Dianne Spencer, Elizabeth Stephens. Jimmy Caldwell, and Eileen Thomas directed homeroom activities. Dorothy Morris led our Student Council as president. Elizabeth Stephens was selected DAR Good Citizen and Peggy Fulbright reigned as Homecoming Queen. Trudy Mathis represented our class as “Miss Senior”, and Susan Redfearn won the Betty Crocker Homemaker Award. Bob Martin was selected King Teen. The Band of Gold brought us more glory bv accepting an invitation to play at the New York World’s Fair. For the fourth year we returned star players Wayne Anderson and Edward Raines to the basketball team which won victory after victory. Freida Cudd and Dorothy Morris, Veteran stars on the girls’ team, returned to the basketball court as part of a team that will long be remembered for its outstand- ing performance. Gary Blackwell and Charles Smith joined last years’ players on the football field. The juniors joined with the seniors in presenting the drama “Inherit The Wind.” The play was a great suc- cess under the direction of Mr. Frank Austell. Serving as editor of The Chapman High Review was, Diane Dollar, and the Panorama editor was Barbara Cul- breth. Now the time has come for the Class of ’64 to bid you farewell. But as we each go forth to make our own Personal history, we shall never forget the one we made together. 37 PRESIDENT ................. Acknowledgments The script writers of the ploy, the 1964 PANORAMA, would like to express their gratitude to those who helped produce it. With apologies to any who may be slighted, the Staff and Sponsor wish to especially thank the following: Mr Joe E Gentry, whose tolerance and helpfuness made this edition a better play. Mrs. Belcher, for her ever-present help. Mr. and Mrs. Marion Gramling, whose home was used as a setting for Superlative, Class Beauty, and Honors pictures Mr. Tommy Briggs, our Delmar photographer, who spent many hours making pictures. He was also our Delmar representative who gave us helpful ideas and waited patiently for pages to be readied for the printer. Mr. Dewell Gwinn, for his professional handling of our MISS PANORAMA contest. The Long Tall Texans, we mean The Dukes who entertained during intermission. The discerning judges, who selected our MISS PANO- RAMA . Mrs. Greene, our true treasurer and financial wizard, who kept us out of bookkeeping problems. The parents of the staff who managed to do without their children's help in the afternoon, evening and sum- mer days while they were busy working out details of this play. Mrs. Harley, who coached us in selling ads. The understanding directors who allowed endless in- terruptions to moke their pictures and those of the characters. The characters, who kept a zillion appointments to have pictures made, especially those who furnished props and costumes The advertisers, who made the publication of our play possible.
