Kapaun students appreciate the advantage of a Catholic education. Our educational philosophy accepts the UNITY of God's only spiritual-intel- lectual-and-material creature-man-and then proceeds to train ALL of him. A systematic development of the WHOLE man-with first things first-is a rarity in todayfs world, and we thank God for our special privilege. 6 1,1 x if W6 l e - .gl it DeCoursey, Mike Moline, Qfrontj, Karolus, ftiiddenj, Dixon, Froelke, Kurlli, Nelson, Qfrontj, Dye, Harris Laird, Onofrio, Landis, L. Holloran, S,J., is President of Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School, and religious superior of the Jesuit community. Father Holloran made his post-grad- uate philosophy studies in Rome. He was president of Saint Louis University from l943 to l949. As head of our new school he has shown us many tokens of his paternal care--but most especially we appreciate the many friends he has made for us in Wichita. 'Jathen 'Hollonan Hdminiatnation .......... The task of administration in a Catholic boys' school is one requir- ing delicate helmsmanship-the skillful coordination of the meth- ods of training soul, mind, person- ality, and body. Bishop Carroll and the Society of Jesus have en- trusted this task in Wichita to the Reverend George M. Pieper, S.J., Principal of Chaplain Kapaun Memorial. His students are grateful to Father Pieper for his dedication to this assignment, since his success means for us the best in the careful education of the whole man. E Chaplain Kapaun Memorial is a strict school: training without dis- cipline would be a contradiction in terms. The Reverend Francis R. Leiker, S.J., is custodian ofthe behavior code necessary as the groundwork of our spiritual, mental social, and physical training under the Jesuits. O O O O O I O I O O O O O O O FR. By his interest in his many friends and in their activities he won the regard and affection of every student and teacher in the school. Sick or well, he was never far from his pals, and if health and size interfered with his sports, he was his schoolmates' best rooter. Mike was an example to us of young Catholic manhood, too. He lived his Faith in the way that prepares men to die well. God grant that we may ' follow that example. We all vote Mike number one. May he rest K in peace. ng F -bf . Although demanding the same basic per- sonal and team qualities as her sister maior- sport, basketball demands each in a different way. The sort of try required has a little different fmor, the guality of the tension is not the same, and so on. Basketball is con- sidered by Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School to be one of the best non-academic educators available . Good last year, Crusaders this year were very good, but not tops. As the wins-column piled higher and higher, and Kansas eyes turned southeast, there were voices heard that said great, and one of these, a few young ones added number one . But the spirit of fight-to-the-finish does not come easy to us youngsters. Nobody expected the first loss, but an experienced hand on the pulse of the bewildered Crusaders who returned to Kansas the night of the second Alva game, could have told that there was boy there as well as man .
