Only he who keeps his eye fixed on the horizon will find his right road. 53 sea With only an antiquated constitution for comfort and the promise of a new one for inspiration, the Student Council Association labored through its traditional duties, managing somehow to keep from being stranded in the void between the students and the association. I. 54 55 Constitution Convention First they talked, then they argued, and finally they fought. And then they fought some more. For long months the Constitutional Convention trudged on. At times the only thing delegates could agree upon was that they might never be able to agree. But somehow they eventually did concur on a Constitution. It ' s not perfect, as one constitutional expert explains, but then again, what is? 56 Officers and Committee Heads Race Council Character, leadership, scholarship and service are the criteria for members of the National Honor Society. The NHS innovates new ideas from these old ideals. Some new ideas from this year ' s NHS were special studyhalls, non-credit courses and enlightening seminars. 58 honor societies A new language— a different alphabet— an entirely new mood— these are a few of the problems faced by foreign language students. Members of the French and Spanish Honor Society have succeeded in conquering these problems and as a result have achieved the satisfaction of mastering a language. Debating is essential for two reasons— It provides a chance to hear other ' s ideas, and it enables one to express his own. It takes a good deal of organization, a good deal of originality and a great deal of time. current events For understanding, you first need information, information provided by knowledgeable people. The Current Events Club sought out these people. And through information they obtained knowledge ranging from student ' s rights in a public school— to the Biafran situation. 61 The Library Club may be the most notorious group around, noted for wild Christmas parties and scandalous action on the balcony, but they are also a hard-working bunch who manage to keep the library going through library courses. Senior term paper research, and everyday hum-drum. 62 As men come together they must learn to understand and live with each other. The French Club, by delving into French culture of yesterday and today, by studying the background of French Society, searches for understanding. french m 64 Spanish No, Christmas isn ' t dead. That was the message of the CHHS Spanish Club. During the Yule season, the Club acquainted its members with the Christmas customs of Spain. There was a celebration of the posados with the breaking of the pihatas. The celebration was heightened by singing carols and a visit from the Three Kings. Using speakers, films, individual projects and field trips, members of the Biology Club are exposed to subjects ranging from genetics to oceanography. Exploring the varied interests of the members, the Biology Club illustrates the facets of Biological Sciences. 66 physical science Keeping up with daily scientific advancement is very difficult. Each day brings new inventions and new theories. The Physical Science Club, in an effort to understand, explores new theories in the fields of chemistry and physics. 67 math games The games people play. Math Games Club members play all sorts of games. From Wff n Proof to Equations to On-Sets, this is the only club around in which members spend all their time playing. DECA members lead double lives, going to school half a day and working half a day. But the experience gained in working is part of their education too. 69 Industrial Cooperative Training is education in a total sense. Providing more than nebulous facts, it gives knowledge of a skill and the confidence that comes from having a skill. vica f The FHA Club challenges the individual to find satisfaction in a useful life. A key work is “future, but “present is a key idea. FHA week focuses on service to school and community, and underlines the purpose of the club. Coping with the problems of learning in the future will take more than just an average teacher. Tne teachers of the future must both be experts in their field and have wide knowledge of other subjects. The Future Teachers of America are getting a head start by preparing now for their careers. Pride. The Society for the Study of Afro-American Culture is pride, that necessary pride that comes from a knowledge and love of one ' s own culture and background. ssaac 74 Yep, the Monogram Club and the Pep Band are a bunch of pretty special people. Comprised of the best looking girls and the most athletic guys around, the Monogram Club is made up of Varsity cheerleaders and lettermen. Members of the Pep Band do their part for CHHS sports by providing spirit in musical form as the Wildcats charge to victory. Bringing people closer together and improving communication between the United States and foreign countries— these are the ideals of American Field Service. Americans abroad and foreign students in America take part in a cultural exchange which can broaden the road to peace. 77 art Creativity can be developed by things other than by an opportunity to create. Members of the Art Club are not only given the time and facilities to create, but are also exposed to the works of the Picassos, Rembrandts and Van Goghs through visits to museums and exhibits. 78 arts and crafts The crafty set of CHHS has formed a new club. The Arts and Crafts Club has been dabbling in decoupage and papier mache jewelry and decorating their homes with paper flowers. 79 Folk music is defined as music created and handed down by common people. It ranges from melodious love songs to ballads with a cacophonous twang. The Folk Music Club attempts to put folk music back into a world dominated by psychedelia, hard rock, and soul. There is romance in drama, in finding yourself through a character created by someone else, but there are so many more sides, all as intriguing. The Drama Club takes a total interest in theatre, from acting to lighting, directing to costuming. drama 81 other mud The Other Mud is an experiment in expression. Creativity is a discipline requiring experience and devotion. It is a combination of weary labor and an outflowing of inspiration. Seeing your work in print is more than enough reward. Other Mud Editors proconian The Proconian club gives those interested a chance to explore the many facets of journalism up close. 83 High school newspapers are usually full of cliches and trivia, but the Proconian escapes these traps with a capable staff which over and over again comes up with All-American ratings. Ask a football player what “going live means. Ask him about “wind sprints and “contact . If he doesn ' t grin, or grimace, he hasn ' t played football for Coach Bob Culton ' s Wildcats. He doesn ' t know how vicious August can be— or how glad, and sad, he can be in November. Friday night— 48 minutes puts a whole week of practice in perspective . . . 95 Football ' s no game. Football ' s a fist in your stomach, salt in your eyes. Looks easy enough— the dirt in your teeth and the grass in your nose. Comfort ' s a plastic bottle filled with hot water. But what ' s it really like— To win your opener, and beat Southern after time has run out? Why does Webb constitute a heartbreaker? What is the injury? and victory? Who ' s Northern, who ' s Roxboro? How does it feel to be third in the conference? Not many guys know. But those that do—know it backwards. 96 flUPc ' i ipt ' 3 ' ] ■B . fl j V f| i M ' I ' NHI ■VmIh MS 1 BJ JV football team )VS Inexperience, depth. One could hardly use both words to talk about the same football team. But the sophomores had both. The JV ' s are the traditionally inexperienced. But they won. The varsity took the best of what they had. And they still won. 98 The only difference between a soph and a senior is experience. It is not unusual to expect the worst from JV athletics. But this year ' s sophomores are giving JV basketball a new image, and part of the new image is the new coach. With their style, the JV ' s can look forward to a proud varsity career. JV basketball team Varsity basketball team varsity basketball 100 District Three basketball is no pushover. Neither is Chapel Hill ' s Wildcat basketball team. Coach Bob Culton sees that his team has both individual standouts and methodical balance. Most teams have one or the other, but it gets to be a long season . . . Basketball ' s no gentleman ' s game. You have to be quick, tough. You have to be good. There ' s no such thing as offensive or defensive — only aggressive. Aggressive versatility, aggressive speed. And if you ' re not everything you have to be at Chapel Hill, there ' s talent on the bench to take your place. 101 state tournament Basketball is a game which can either minimize or maximize mis¬ takes. A good team will minimize their own and miximize their opponents. Tournaments usually reflect a good deal about the game, but little about the teams. So it was with Chapel Hill. A phenomenal record; wasted in one night. But not before they had shown the kind of team Chapel Hill really has. 25-2 is not a bad year ' s work. 103 104 Swimming Team What ' s a workout at 6:45 am? What team worries about a water shortage? A few at Chapel Hill c ould answer. Cold water; sprints; no rest; and sophomores. As usual, the Catfish have a lot to show. Chapel Hill the only 3A team in the state. Running a close second behind 4A power Grimsiey. Fifteen swimmers; one of the best representatives of athletics at Chapel Hill. 105 106 Track, self-competition, athletes, striving to be good. In track especially if your best is not good enough it doesn ' t show. Runners are born. You can ' t teach a sprinter how to run faster, only how to do his best. Chapel Hill ' s track has a tradition of natural talent. To have a good team is to be one of the best. Track Tearn 107 Chapel Hill has an unpredictable baseball game. The coach has been changing every year. A small team leaves little room for depth, or injury. You make errors, not mistakes- But it ' s the same thing. This year the Cats should put everything together, and bring the team to a respectable conference standing. baseball tennis 109 Girl ' s basketball team the kittens 110 111 varsity cheerleaders Varsity cheerleaders 112 School Spirit, well-worn words. And no one know it better than the cheerleaders. Trying to find something new in a clich6d phrase, they give something more than an out-dated ideal. JV cheerleaders Pity the JV Cheerleaders. They have a problem; their class is in too much confusion to really think of spirit, something that comes only with unity. The cheerleaders know this. They understand, and through their own great enthusiasm, they overcome. jv cheerleaders powderpuff football Football, no longer just a boy ' s sport, now belongs to girls too. Amid the classic injuries— broken nails and split hair— the junior girls scratched a victory over the senior girls. A first in CHHS history. 115 116 ■f . ■ . . _i, V, {V ♦ • % « « . Surreptitiously, other names insert themselves into the text, and, presently, I am reading about us, as we shall be when we are the past. Most has utterly vanished. Problems which were once so vital, spread them¬ selves over the pages as cold abstractions— simple ones, but we failed to understand them. We appear as rather stupid, foolish, self-seeking puppets, moved by obvious strings, which, now and again, get tangled up . . . It is no caricature that I encounter in the distorting mirror of historical research. Simply the proof that it all has been vanity. graduation 123 Boys State National Merit Semifinalists 126 junior follies senior play HOMECOMING-QUEEN Vickie Davis SENIOR QUEEN Sharon Hargraves homecoming court FOOTBALL QUEEN Robin Melton 131 beauty court QUEEN Gloria Regester Selected by Charlie Scott MAID OF HONOR Lee Provancha 133 beauty court JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE Isabelle Patterson ALTERNATE Paulette Minor 134 ALTERNATE Susan Penniall SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE Barby Prothro ALTERNATE Nicci McKay 135 Something waits In the depths of Man And comes as in a dream With distant wisps of forgotten music A flashburst ' s blue retinal aftermath Teasing Pockscarred plastic all that remains Leaving you Falling toward earth Grasping at an invisible hand That ' s not there — Roy Moisten t A ■ 1 .«? 1 I awoke to an ordinary morning with gray light reflected from the street, but still remembered the dark-blue night above the tree line, the open moor in moonlight, the crest in shadow. Remembered other dreams of the same mountain country: twice I stood on its summits, I stayed by its remotest lake, and followed the river towards its source. The seasons have changed and the light and the weather and the hour. But it is the same land. And I begin to know the map and to get my bearings. 142 I I I Billy Barnes Bonnie Allen Chris Allen Libby Allison Bill Baggett Mary Baggett Charles Baldwin Debbie Barnes Susan Barnett Pattie Barker Phylis Barnett Pete Barre Steve Bawden Sharon Beatty And the cycle begins all over again, but with a new sophomore class. We followed the traditions set before us, but we also formulated and carried out our own ideas. Our idea of a homecoming queen was a sophomore. And so it was. We decked the halls with mistle¬ toe for the holiday season. We thought that students should have some baked goods occasionally after school. Almost every Thursday afternoon after Christmas, there was a bake sale sponsored by the sophomore class, as we, with our usual alacrity, plan ahead for our Junior-Senior. You ' re right in the middle of two extremes— seniors and sophs-worldliness and naivity. It can be a disconcerting feeling to be a junior, to be a middleman, to be, well, to be sort of average. Sure, you put on barbecues in the fall, knock off the seniors in the powderpuff game in the winter, folly in the spring, and, of course, come out with a junior-senior. But so what? What ' s that matter? There ' s only one thing for you to do, juniors—become a senior quick. 161 cr Gretchen Baughman John Benson cheerleaders Peter Barnes Karen Barton Tom Bakewell Frank Barber Ricky Bass Kim Barham display different opinions on our projects Richard Bierck Susan Blackburn Ted Blake Linda Blanchard Pam Blotner Karen Blyth Amy Booker Irving Boyce Bill Brashear Marica Braun 162 Crys Bridgers Linda Brobst Rusty Butler David Byerly Mary Bynum Wallace Bynum Linda Byrd Angelo Capparello Bob Carter Cathy Carter Terry Carver John Chaffee Jesse Chavis Donna Cheek Tom Cheek 163 Martha Collier Cherin Chewning Todd Collins Linda Colwell Thomas Clark Lynn Cohoon Edric Cotten Iris Cole Anne Clark Carolyn Conner Chris Copeland junior boys Kathy Cotton Martin Coyner Sarah Crabtree Steve Crabtree Debbie Crane 164 Mike Crane Margaret Crawford Jackie Creech Mary Cromartie Phil Davis Richard Davis Barbara Dickinson Carol Donnan Zenda Douglas play their games Brenda Crowell Theresa Curtis Debbie Davis Lloyd Davis Jerry Daniel Doris Eastwood Stephe Edgerton James Edwards Ted Ehrhard 165 Sharonne Farrington Reta Farrington Reginald Farrow Charles England Laura Everett Alean Farrington Clare Farrington Bruce Filley Marian Flynn Walter Fowler Dennis Farrington Kenneth Farrington Margaret Frame Jill Fraser Garland Freeland the ups and downs of junior sports Laura Gaskin Vickie Gattis Kris Gentry Teresa George Bill Giduz Marylib Grantham Vicky Green Lissa Hardy Yolande Hargraves David Harper Lindy Harper Mavis Harris Marybeth Hendricks Susie Hill Charlie Hinsdale Ed Hobson Van Hogan 167 Ann Holland Mark Hopper Debra Horne Kenneth Holland Nancy Holler Ginny Hollister Charles Howard Aaron Honeycutt cut- Ann Huskey Teri Jernigan Monty Johnson Jenifer Jones Barrett Joyner Betsy Hutton Marianne Hyre Jay Jacobowitz Susan Johnson 168 Don Knight Eric Kolbinski Cheryl Kozel Tom Langenderfer Charles Canning Bruce Julian Fran Keller David Kistler Keith Klukas this is work, not folly Ann Lapkin Seddon Lee Kathy Lenski Edith Lester Debbie Levin 169 Lynn Lowry Dub Ludwick Emily McGowan Sally McMahon Walter McMillan Mary Mace Bruce Mann Tonda Mason Charlotte Medlin Erwin Merritt Paulette Minor Jim Mitchell Howard Mize Vivian Moore jr-sr plans 170 fly high Jack Mullen Beth Neville Debbie Neville Craig Newman Brenda Nichols David Nickens Alan Nickerson Marvin Morgan Carolyn Morrow Henry Morrow Debbie Moss Alexander Noell Gail Norwood Irvin Nunn Ann Oakley Tema Okun Cathy Oliver 171 James Owens Debbie Padgett Isabelle Patterson Ed Peacock Pam Petch Debbie Peters Lynn Pepper Ann Perry Teresa Picket Ruth Poland Dan Pollitt no half-baked scheme for us Gloria Regester Becky Riggsbee 172 Settle Roberts Karen Ross Lees Ruoff Haywood Sanders George Scheer Karla Schmidt Lin Silver Andy Skakle Joe Slaughter bbq rakes in the dough Barby Smith Rick Smith Wayne Stone Charles Straughn Lisa Sparrow Rusty Sparrow Alton Staley Roxanne Stewart 173 John Ward law Kathy Watson Meta Weaver John Talbert Alison Thomas Jacqueline Thomas Mary Thompson Lorraine Turner Wayne Tysinger Jeff Umphlett Tim Upchurch junioring beats sophomoring John Vastardis Melissa White Jeanette White Tommy Whitfield Cindy Wiles Billy Wilkin Melvin Woods Clare Wooley Donna Wrenn Sally Zwerneman Judy Wilson Linda Wilson Mollie Windsor 175 176 MILTON ALSTON RAYMOND ATWATER JIM BALL BILLY ANDREWS JAMES ASBILL JAMES ATWATER last class of 60 ' s _ graduates VIRGINIA ATWATER LINDA BALDWIN DONNA BALDWIN RICKY BARNETT 177 ANNE BROWN DELORIS BYNUM rings on their fingers and belles on SARA BOWDEN RICHARD BUCKNER TINA BYRD BRUCE BRANT biff bream PRISCILLA BURNETTE RONNIE CAMPBELL FRED CARSWELL 178 their toes MIKE CLARK LINDA CASANTA JOE CHRIETZBERG DEBBIE COHOON JAMES CHEEK LONNIE CLARK JAY COLE 179 SUSAN COLWELL DEBBIE CORNELL CAROLYN COSTON IDA COUCH GARY COUNCIL GLORIA COUNCIL MARY MAC COXE CAROLEAN CRAIG ’69ers wield power?
