With unremitting hard work year after year, she has helped give, not only our class, but our school, many yearbooks to remember. teacher, but as a friend. For all of these things and more, we, the senior class and members of the an- nual staff, wish to show our gratitude by dedicating the 1958 HILLIFE to Mrs. Bernadine Sullivan. . l t We kyliw For Being Our Friend... Mr. Davis came to Chapel Hill in 1945 to serve as principal of Chapel Hill High School and superintendent of the city schools. Because of the burning of the high school, classes were being held in the elementary school, the Cone Building, and the basement of the Baptist Church. From that time to this, under Mr. Davis' guidance, Chapel Hill High School has become one of the best schools in the state and the enrollment has at least doubled. Even though Mr. Davis is now retiring, his influence will still be strongly felt because he has been instrumental in the long range plans which include a high school cafeteria, a new home economics building, and a new elementary school. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Davis for all that he has done for us. For Leocllng Us Through aiu! A new man on the job was our principal and associate superintendent, Dr. Joseph M. Johnston. Dr. Johnston quickly made himself at home here after coming to us from Asheboro where he had been prin- cipal. This year, besides teaching math, Miss May Marshbanks carried out her new job of being assistant principal. This job entailed more counseling, much filling out of tran- scripts, and taking over in the principal's ab- sence. These people, plus their very capable 23- member faculty, guided us expertly through our school year. f iff 'Q 5 fr f 01 2 I MISS OLA ANDREWS MRS JUNE BASILE Algebra Latm Spazzxh Hzstory MRS. Our class has evolved from bewildered, scourged freshmen, through all- knowing, scoffed-at sophomores, through hard-working, recognized juniors to finally become those venerated, fourth-year antiquities of the school, the seniors. Through the years, those first scattered groups from W'hite Cross, Carrboro, and Chapel Hill that Student Body Pxesident Clarice Merritt welcomed on Orientation Day, W5-f, have drawn closer and closer and closer together, until they have become one: the class of '58-one of the more outstanding senior classes ever to pass through the doors of CHH5. As freshmen we seemed to be the greenest weeds those upperclassmen ever trampled down. But we pulled through the first-week chaos to live up to our name fresh as we stole the spotlight briefly to give CHHS its first Homecoming Queen to come from the freshman class, Martha Hubbard. That year we began a tradition. VC'e elected Ruffin Harville as our class president just as we were to do for the next two years. And we led the school honor roll for the whole year, just as we were to do for our sophomore year. Crawling out of the freshman mire of Daria! Copfzerfielzl. general science classes, and the nerve-fraying games of our Cinderella basketball team, we now had firm enough footing to become sophomores. This was the year we began to exist as a class. In the year of Ronnie Lacks-y's reign as Student Body President, we entered a float series- Bulldog Recipes - in the Homecoming Parade, and Mrs. Sullivan's hard-working homeroom won honorable mention. XY'e were unable, though, to escape laughs from upper- classmen when we received third place in Stunt Nite for His Grace Becomes Her Highness. Leaving Silas ,lltzrrler behind to count his money, and leaving our dissected frogs to stew in their own formaldehyde, we waded out of the underclassman swamps to become juniors. - XY'hat a year! XVe showed we had congealed into a top-notch class by selling more magazine subscriptions than ever before, and by winning first prize on Stunt Nite with the spectacular history of the music and dance, From Stone to Rock. Sandy XY'illiams attested to the beauty and popularity in the class by being elected Homecoming Queen, while sixteen class members attested to scholar- ship by being inducted into the Honor Society. By no means Shakespearean drama, liverybody's Getting Married, the junior play, entertained the school. The year was capped by our lavish junior-Senior. XX'e danced in a Deep Purple dream created by glitter and silhouettes and Russ Olson's orchestra. As we watched our junior marshals led by Chief Marshal Neil Clark, leading the class of '57 down the aisle on graduation night, we had many memories to recall: jerry Hocutt, School President: our championship basketball teamg a district-leading baseball team, and unforgettable American History under Mr. Herndon. Now we had reached our peak. We were the Seniors of CHHS. Honor still came as lfrances Strowd became the third Homecoming Queen from our class, and our float series won. Now, though, much more responsibility came with the honors. Under Tam Lefler, class President, and Wyndell Merritt, School President, we pitched ourselves fdignity and alll into a flurry of activity. We began to realize our time in Chapel Hill High was growing short, and we had to make the best of our opportunities. Class rings, selling vanilla for a Wash- ington trip, scholarship tests, invitation cards, being measured for caps and gowns, and frequent teacher-lectures only pointed more strongly to the fact that we were moving quickly toward commencement night when we would leave CHHS. But when that night came, we knew we could be proud of the name we were leaving behind us. Hardison, Hunter, Class Historians Toi. . . Q- vt ffl 'Q Besides The Good Times. 5 'X I 2 and 5. Glee Club The Glee Club is made up mostly of vo- cal music students. The remaining members are chosen at the beginning of the year in an audition of those wishing to be in the Glee Club but unable to take vocal music. The entire Glee Club practices once a week in preparation for its programs which include a Christmas concert, usually a spring concert, and a trip to the state con- test. The Head Cheerleader is elected in the spring and her squad of eight girls is chosen at the end of the school year by a special committee composed of faculty and townspeople. The cheerleaders spend long hours in the sum- mer practicing old cheers and perfecting new ones. In addition to cheering at all football and basket- ball games, the cheerleaders hold pep rallies and put up pep posters before each game which help to in- crease both team and school spirit.
