THE NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY SEVEN Chapel Hill Hign Schco Media Center Chapel Hill, N.C. 275 is THE SENIOR CLASS OF CHAPEL HILL HIGH SCHOOL CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA The annual staff hopes that as you, the students, read and re-read your Hillife, you will remember all the experiences that made up the 1956-57 year at Chapel Hill High School. We have tried to make the Hillife represent every part of our school life — all the things that go into one won- derful year of high school. As you read, remember; and when you remember, never forget. • redentina Site Spirit of C. JJ. J4. Mr. Soto gave even more than these, however. He gave himself, and became our friend. For his guidance with our Junior Play and Junior-Senior, and for his cheerful smile and helping hand, we, his students, dedicate our annual, the 1957 Hillife, to him. 4 5 Even 1-hough this is the last year we will have the Rec, the memories of the wonderful times which we have spent there will not be forgotten over the years. In a few years there may be a bigger and better Rec, but it could not mean more to the students of Chapel Hill High School than our Rec and its wonderful director, Sarah Umstead, have meant to us, the class of 1957. dcirah Xjmitead 6 Chapel Hill High School as seen from the water tank. Everyone benefits from Snackshack and the friendliness of talking with fellow students. Interesting, well-planned assemblies are enjoyed by all students at CHHS. A We will never forget our classes, from which we have gained much knowledge and many experiences to help us on the road to a richer life. Neither will we forget the teachers who gave us help and understanding throughout our high school days. 10 We remember dances, whether at the Rec, Hope Valley, or our own Tin Can, a good time was always had by all . . . Homecoming, with its parade and gaily decorated floats, and all the other excit- ing events, both during and after school this year. 1 1 12 Every student has a part in Chapel Hill ' s football season; as a member of the team, a cheerleader, a band member, or a spectator cheering from the stands. We all will con- tinue to thrill to the remem- brance of a close game, the joy and elation felt after a victory, and even the sadness of defeat. 13 L i CHARLES W. DAVIS Superintendent WESLEY J. September, 1953, from Carrboro, White Cross, and Chapel Hill Elementary Schools we, the so-called lowest forms of humanity, gathered to constitute the Class of ' 57. The student body president, Robert Blackwood, known to everyone as Peanut , welcomed us to our new life. We elected the very capable Gordon Neville to lead us through our first year. Some of our fondest memories are of those first stumbling efforts to survive the chaos of the surging masses of confident upperclassmen in the halls. We soon caught on, however, that it was every man for himself, sink or swim. Having gained a little confi- dence, we joyfully flung ourselves into the traditional CHHS activities. Almost before we knew it, we were greet- ing our sophomore year. We came back ready to shoulder a little more of the responsibility of citizens of a democratic school govern- ment. Bubbling with self-assurance and enthusiasm, we lived up to our class name, Wise fools, in every way except in our choice of class president, Pat Thompson. Entering the race for the District III Cham- pionship, our sixth-place basketball tqam won the title of the Cinderella Team by cap- turing the Conference Championship. After much coaching and many warnings from our teachers, we began half-heartedly to plan for the Junior-Senior which we would give our junior year. Although we managed to sponsor a dance which helped our financial situation some, we did not fully realize the expense and responsibility of that distant event. Juniors! Now we were the upperclassmen who smiled patiently at the little freshmen trying to read his schedule upside-down. CLASS HISTORY Realizing that we were maturing rapidly, we began to take more seriously our responsi- bility as leaders of our school. As president of our junior class, Tommy Goodrich helped us to band together and work toward our great goal, the Junior-Senior. Since money was our main problem, we started trying to earn some by selling magazine subscriptions. After com- pleting that project, we began work on another idea. After countless rehearsals, much work, and a lot of fun in between, we produced the very successful play, Willie ' s Weekend . May 18 found us hosts to the seniors at Hope Valley Country Club in Durham, as we danced in a Fantasy-land to the music of the Carolinians. Our senior year found us rather bewildered that we had finally reached our goal, but we were able confidently to assume the role of dignified seniors. Assuming the top posts in our student government were Jerry Hocutt, president of the Student Council, and Barbara Butler, Chief Justice of the Honor Council. Our distinction as seniors began with the excitement of getting our class rings, which we proudly displayed to the underclassmen. Feeling extremely important, we worried over invitations, caps and gowns, and all the other things about which seniors are privileged to worry. The Senior Play was over, the Junior- Senior only a memory, exams completed, and graduation day had arrived before we knew it. We had started high school as individuals, but we had learned to work, play, and live together as a group. We had grown up together. Vice President STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council at Chapel Hill High School provides an effective method of self-government to all students. Its many projects include the Student Handbook, Orientation Day for new students, the Get-Acquainted Dance, Stunt Night, and Vocations Day. The Student Council also plans the assemblies, selects the Student of the Month, and helps to care for the building and grounds. 66 HONOR COUNCIL The Honor Council, the judicial branch of our student government, is an organization worthy of every student ' s praise. The use of the honor system gives each pupil the responsibility of his own behavior, therefore hastens strength of character and maturity. Barbara Butler. The students performing the various tasks, such as writing articles, copy reading, arranging for advertisements, and making up pages, produce a news- paper of real value and pleasure to the school. 68 H I LLI FE The culmination of a year of hard work is the arrival of the Hillife in the spring. The staff works very hard each year to have the best possible yearbook — one that will contain memories of every day-to-day experience of school life. Many hours of taking pictures, writing, lay-out, and proofreading over and over take up a lot of a staff member ' s day, but each gains from this work in the knowledge that he is helping to produce an annual that will be en- joyed by every person at Chapel Hill High School. CHEERLEADERS A great influence over school spirit at all sports events are Chapel Hill High ' s cheerleaders. The head cheerleader is elected in the spring, and shortly after, five girls from the junior and senior classes, and three from the sophomore and freshman classes are chosen for the following year. During football season, the cheeleaders hold pep rall ; es, cheer at all games, and make posters reminding students of the dates of the games. They cheer at all basketball games, and put up posters announcing these games also. Much credit should be given to this enthusiastic squad, for they spend long hours practicing and cheering CHHS ' S teams to victory. 84 Tommy Hogan elected Most Outstanding Player by teammates. 85 : ;‘ sr Charles Todd — Center Haywood Pendergrass-— Guard Clark Rogers — Tackle Co-captain Tommy Hogan- Tackle Sammy Carroll — End Leigh Skinner — Fullback Bobby Costello— -Halfback Larry Mangum — Guard Ruffin Harville — Quarterback Paul Cheek — End Rudy Barker — Quarterback Wayne Poe — End Co-captain Tommy Goodrich — Fullback Baldy Williams — Fullback : Henry Andrews — Guard Bobby Blake — Guard Tommy Burns — End Jack Carlisle — Halfback Larry Crabtree — Guard Goodrich carries around left end.
