PROLOGUE: 'tThe play's the thing. This was written by William Shakespeare, a historian in his own right. Only our PLAY, unlike his, is one in which we all take a part. Our teachers, the directors of the PLAY, have guided us in our development: mental, physical, and spiritual. During this period, lasting friendships have been formed. We have matured to young men and women ready to meet the world and take the responsibilities of adulthood. This play tells of our role in the PLAY of CHHS. Here it is-the PLAY, in four acts. FIRST ACT: As the curtain opened, we found ourselves understudies in the PLAY of plays. We were awe- struck by the stage setting, our new building. In search of our classrooms, we tripped upstairs, down- stairs, and over stairs, always in a rush. Donald Christopher, SCA President, and Charles Green, Honor Council Chief Justice, were the principal actors in the PLAY. Louis Freeland was our own president. We started off a series of firsts-the Honor Council which we could make or break in our high school careers, the afore-mentioned new building, and the first of four firsts in Stunt Night. Our skit was none other than 'LA Stunt Night Committee Meeting. Glittering stars and gay balloons decorated the Rendezvous Room for New Year's Eve-1951. When the Valentine Ball arrived, we freshmen came through with the winner, Miss joan Neville. A little less wet behind the ears, we moved on to greater heights, our sophomore year. SECOND ACT: Being great character actors, we decided, this year, to play the fool-the wise fool that is. We made our entrance by swaggering back to school, casting disparaging looks at the freshmen. The script called for Coleman Gentry and jimmy Goodwin to play the roles of SCA President and Chief justice, respectively. joey Rosen made his debut as president of our class. Father Time and many clocks provided the backdrop for the Y-Teen New Year's Eve Dance. Lacking a large wardrobe, we paraded in sheets and captured first place in Stunt Night with our rendition of Portia Faces Life. Not allowing anyone else to outshine our stars, we took third place also with a Meller Drammerf' The baseball team gave a top performance in taking the District III championship. Happily we left school, realizing that all great actors and actresses need a rest. THIRD ACT: At last we were upperclassmen and actors of no little prestige. Magazine sales to finance our big production, the junior-Senior, were pushed by our class president, Clarice Merritt. Student directors of our activities were SCA President Robert Blackwood and Honor Council Chief Justice Mike Gallagher. Our junior Play within the PLAY was Great Caesar's Ghost, another first. C'est Si Bon! was the theme for the best Y-Teen New Year's Eve Dance yet. The boys showed their talents as they danced off with the prize in La Classe de Ballet, Stunt Night-1954. Then came the production of the year, the one for which we had waited so long, our own junior-Senior. The Hope Valley Country Club became a glittering rocketship headed for the moon. Out of This World -thats how we felt while dancing to the music of Russ Olsen. Looking back, we now felt we had rehearsed our lines sufficiently to take over the leading roles at CHHS. FOURTH ACT: Every play has its climax and the climax for ours was our Senior year. Beauty and brains were combined in the prima donnas of the class, Clarice Merritt, SCA President, and Martha Ann Cheek, Chief justice. To plan the after-performance party, our beach trip, we chose Dan Fowler, class president. Santa Claus was never the same after our rendition of Twas for Stunt Night. This made four firsts in a row and thus the trophy was ours to keep. To keep the honors in the class we waddled off with second place with a Duck Weddingfl The Y-Teens produced an effective New Year's Dance with 'tMr. Sandman as the theme Calling cards, class pictures, rings, invitations, our annual Ca scrapbook of memoriesb, and caps and gowns-all were props for the Senior year. Spring came quickly bringing with,it the Senior play and junior-Senior, with us as the guests of honor. Algeria Although the records do not show it, the 1954 Wildcats did have a good team. At the first of the season there was plenty of good spirit and high hopes, then after the first defeat by Sanford a little spirit was lost, but there was still hope. Chapel Hill is very lucky tohave as its coaches Bill Grice and Tom Stevens. Here's wishing them a successful future. On the first night of the tournament the activity bus, overloaded with enthusiastic fans, arrived at the Henderson gymnasium. Thirty-two minutes of actual playing time later, the Wildcats tip-toed off the court with a 64-53 victory over the favored Henderson team. The next night when the Wildcats of Chapel Hill met the top-seeded Wildcats of Oxford, a larger crowd than ever marched into the Henderson gymnasium tossing up confetti and singing Let the Wildcats ln. T At the end of the game the lights of the scoreboard glared out a 47-44 score, and the Cinderella Team had won another surprise victory. The Chapel Hill fans flooded the court with drums, trumpets, cymbals, and cowbells! After the victory over Oxford, the most important game with Roxboro, loomed up. The CHHS team was supported by a very spirited crowd which cheered at every opportunity. With the help of the fans and the cheerlead- ers, the Wildcats won the game and the Conference Championship by a score of 47-45. Amid clapping, cheering, tears, and shouts of joy, Coach Bill Grice was awarded the Conference trophy. The parting cry was On to Sanford and the State Tournament. 90 unior ucrdifg First Row: Turner, Burket, Green , Riggsbee, Harville. Second Row: Todd, Lackey, Schwentker Costello, Poe.
