Everyone enjoys Snack Shack. Scoop McAllister, Presidentg Murray Wall, Vice-President: Roxada Harward, Treasurerg Ruth Hundley, Secretary. Led by these officers we, the Senior class, have enjoyed our busiest year. It has been a memorable one, and we hope that we have carried the responsibilities and set the example as leaders of the school. , Ml CLASS HISTORY September 1950--and finally we were in high school. As we came from the Carrboro, White Cross, and Chapel Hill elementary schools, there were many new faces which soon became familiar. R. B. Fitch was president of the student body, and Robert Peanut Blackwood led our class meetings in Mr. Noble's room in the basement of the old wing. The old wing was our Home that year, it was the only completed part of the building. The sound of hammering, drilling, and machinery-- the erection of the remainder of the building--broke the lull of many a science and civics class. In keeping with tradition, a freshrnan,Jackie Partin was crowned CHHS Sweetheart at the annual Valentine Ball. The varsity basketball team won the District 3 Championship, and the Jayvees had an undefeated season. As Sophomores we were not as confident as we had expected to be, for we had a beautiful spacious newbuilding to which to become accustomed. The Honor System, under the leadership of our first Chief Justice, Charles Green, went into effect, and Don Christopher was student body president. With our eyes on the future, we gave a successful square dance to raise money for the Junior -Senior. Ned Hedgpeth served as our class president that year. Nineteen hundred and fifty-one, fifty-two was a memorable year in athletics for CHHS. The basketball team won the Sandhills In- vitational Tournament and again captured the District 3 Championship. Our swim- mers placed third in the Southeastern Interscholastic Meet. The baseball team not only won the district championship, but also went on to beat Kinston for the regional title. Juniors! --and again Robert Blackwood was chosen for the difficult role of class president. Jimmy Goodwin led the ever-increasingly effective Honor System, and Coleman Gentry was head of the student body. Money was uppermost in our minds that year as we planned the Junior -Senior. In the fall we had a successful magazine drive. Then we sponsored the school's first White Christmas Dance, which was also a great success. The baseball team again won the District 3 crown, but this time they lost the regional title to Kinston. Our extra-curricular program was greatly expanded as many new clubs were added. Next came a flurry of heated discussions and committee meetings. The result, a gala banquet and prom planned around the theme, Moonlight and Roses. For the first time it was held at the Hope Valley Country Club, where we danced to the music of Roy Cole's Orchestra. All our hard work proved worthwhile. , Then came the moment we'd lived for--our Senior Year. We chose Scoop Mc- Allister as class president, and Mike Gallagher and Robert Blackwood led the Honor Council and student body, respectively. The new school grounds were landscaped, and we knew we had a building of which to be proud. A senior, Carla Smith, was crown- ed Sweetheart of CHHS, breaking a five-year line of Freshmen Queens. We received our class rings, ordered calling cards and invitations, were leaders in all school act- ivities, studied Macbeth , wrote term-papers, had the front seats in assemblies, and gave our class play, we knew we were truly Seniors at last. Many improvements have been made and many conveniences added to the school during our stay. From the proceeds of Snack Shack, an activities bus was purchased for school group trips. Along with the new building, we got lockers and new desks. The national and state flags for the auditorium were presented to the school by the class of '52. During our Junior year, a heating system was finally installed in our beloved tin can. It didn't always work, but nevertheless, it made physical education and basketball games more enjoyable, at least sometimes. A display case for school trophies, two water coolers, and several clocks were added our Senior Year. The ornamental benches along the front walk gave us a place to get together and enjoy snack shack and lunch hour. To keep us from drowning in the mud, the driveway from Franklin Street to the team rooms was paved. With fond farewell we leave--thankful for the experiences of these four years which have helped us grow toward maturity. Our lives were filled with years of joy That nothing could enshrowd, Those memories of Freshman days Of which we were so proud. But as we think back on those days The future comes to mind, We wonder if the years ahead Will be like those behind. No, there will be a higher hill Before the valley green, Another ridge for us to top Ere rolling plains are seen. l . ' sf, .LQ , K-: A . ,, --,- 1 4 , 'Q K 1 a in at ,ge A ' L Mike Gallagher, the boy most like- ly to succeed, is just bubbling over with charm as he fills in the other half of Jackie Partin's office as the two with the most personality. Living up to what's expected of her, Ruth Hundley is most cooperative and looks the other way. ' ff Our two most talented and best all around Seniors are auditioning in Ed Sullivan's studio for a fourteen week engagement. KMr. Sullivan is too far left to be seen.J Joyce Marshall and Ned Hedgpeth drop their most dignified titles for a moment and flash their biggest smiles, while Ned, being most polite helps Joyce with her coat. It is quite obvious why Nancy Wood- ard and Tommy Lloyd have been cho- sen the cutest boy and girl in the Senior Class. Kay McGavran, the most likely to succeed, is delivering a few pointers to two most naive students, Barbara Lou I-lellen and Bibb Latane'. 1 N I 4 I 1 wiisasgv- - ,i .ir Nancy Woodard and Billy Thomp - son, best dancers, are oblivious to the fact that th e biggest flirt, Jimmy Campbell is patiently waiting to cut in. 1 Filling their capacity as friend- liest, J o an N o r w o o d and Charles Fentnerlend a steadying hand to Jane Hogan and Vic Huggins, most athletic, obviously in the prime of condition. .drama Th e b e s t -looking boy and girl, Murray Wall and Patsy Poythress don't seem to realize that the best- dressed boy, Lorin Campbell, is pro- ceeding to break up abeautiful friend- ship. Or will Patsy mind ? fShe's best-dressed, tool. 7 It is also necessary that we men- tion three other important camera- shysuperlative S. They are Mac P r o c to r and Julia Voorhis - most mischievous, and Anzenette Andrews- most musical. In this obviously posed picture, two most intellectual and studious people, Ellen Brauer and Scoop Mc- Allister appear to be boning for a rather important exam. M a r th a Wociferousj D avi s and Harvey fThe Witj Stoffer are not hav- ing a hard time being most talkative, while Lelia Snipes and Robert Lassiter are politely being most quiet. r -nmwy f 1 CLASS PROPHECY We are gathered here today, alumni and children, to celebrate the reunion of the 1954 graduating class of Chapel Hill High School. Our class historian, Ruth Hundley Vickers, will give us an account of the events that have taken place since our graduation. The Gallagher, Hedgpeth, and McAllister Hospital fformerly N. C. Memoriall is flour- ishing under new management? . With head doctors, Mike, Ned and, Scoop directing the proceedings, many of their former classmates of CHHS are now employed. The Co-Super- intendents of nursing are our own Jane and Roxada, while Jackie, when not entertaining the public with her ever popular Carrboro Lights , is the left-handed man to Carla, the head pediatrician. The evereffective medicines are supplied by the only legalized drug-peddler in the county, Smug Wall, The hospital's Grade -A sanitation record is upheld by Speedy Rosemond, who keeps strict discipline over his janitors and orderlies. C. M. Proctor, Jr. monopolizer of hospital cafeterias all over the state, makes ours his home office. Lorin and Julia are managers of the Sloan's Hospitality Shoppe, which is located near the entrance to the dental department, directed by Dr. Robert Ross, Dean of Denistry. His able assistant, Anzy McKnight, when not chasing her twin boys, is conducting a class for beginners in dental hygiene. The nurses are proudly wearing their new uniforms designed by Joyce of the House of Grossman. Carolyn, very enthusiastic over her new Shotts ambulances with 4-wheel drive, has chosen Bryan,Bil1yC. and Leonard as drivers. June and Mary Sue have charge of the hospital's laundry trucks, which are also equipped with 4-wheel drive. Elsewhere in our fair city we find Patsy Poythress, our own Miss America of 1956, and her partner Joan Norwood, running a very successful modeling agency. The partner- ship of Fentner and Blackwood is doing a booming business as the only civil engineering firm in town. Carolyn Jane is very efficiently putting forth slim young things from her Madame T-Bone's Reducing Salon. Old Moneybags McGavran and Every-Ad-Counts Hun- dley are collecting 1392, interest through their Make 'Em and Break 'Em Loan Company much to the dismay of Carnie Joe Clark, the president-elect of the Bank of Chapel Hill. Gerald Cheek, finally retired from high school, hasjust completed his third volume of The Delights of School Days, which is making the best-seller list. Orange-Blossom Latane has just accomplished the perfection of his Big Orange Drank. Ann Mclver and Shirley Craw- ford have caught their Strowd twins and are raising their own. By the way, Old News-Nose Margaret has started Chapel Hill' s first daily news paper, The Morning Bulletin. In other parts of our country we find more of CHHS alumni making the headlines with their various jobs and positions. Martha Davis, the only real drama star to issue forth from Miss Lewis' dramatic classes, is currently being seen on Broadway starring in her own production of the revised edition of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, re- cently banned in Boston. Gordon Proctor and Charles Pendergraft have broken the record for the collection of royalties on their firstbook which is exploding all theories on physics, setting scientific reasoning on its head. Coach Tommy Lloyd, mentor for the Hill Top Totterers , is having a busy season since his All -American, Vic Huggins, has finally peel- ed off his cast. We read in the new York Times that Admiral James Michael Campbell has received from the President of the United States, an award for his outstanding work in the U. S. Coast Guard. The President is our own William Hotelling, whose election by the Whig party ejected from office the remaining minority of Republicans. The only real industrial CHI-ISer is Prabir Roy, who was voted Chapel Hill's Best-Dressed Man, is manufacturing Green Jackets and Blue -jeans with great acclaim. Those not with us today include Ellen Braur and Harriet Horney, who on the 6th of June, 1954, Cspokej concludingly to Miss Lewis on certain principals of Proconian manage- ment. May they rest in peacel Well, gang, that's about it. Each day the mail is checked, stamped, and sorted, hundreds of books are circulatedj at the same time others are checked in and shel- ved, over-due notices are written, attendance is checked, and permission slips are signed. To counter-balance the drud- gery of every-day routines there are more interesting jobs, which occur at less frequent intervals, such as processing new and re-bound books, vertical filing, arranging displays and audio-visual materials. Programs at the bi-monthly meetings this year have in- cluded speeches by writers Wilfrid S. Bronson and Manly Wade Wellman, a trip to the University Rare Book Room, movies, a contest, and a panel discussion on education in other countries by CHHS students from those countries. At Christmas the club entertained the faculty at a Christ- mas browsing tea, and in the spring a luncheon was held for the senior members of the club in recognition of their ser- vices. Members in the club are also members in the North Car- olina High School Library Association and participate in the annual convention, which this year was held in High Point, and in the district meeting in Raleigh.
