Class Poem The way was steep and dim the path The rocks we kicked aside to clear the way Oft went astray, and hit the man behind, As we were struck with stones tossed back by those ahead. But once or twice we, dodging, happened to look down And found a spot of beauty hid, or up And there ! Behind that wisp of cloud The sun, eternal cheerer, peeked, Then poured out light upon our way for just a while. The way was hard and rough the path but now we ' ve reached a plain Where stands a door for each of us. Great - Dark - Forbidding in its aweful majesty. No way but forward for the door has opened. But still behind, as we turn wistfully and gaze We see time spent in labor seem as play And playtime then as riotous gaiety now The ever-lengthening void between what is and was Cannot be crossed but adds a charm to things now gone. A step - we ' re on the other side. Yet close enough To know security in those far things beyond the open door. This side is dark, And darker still as shuts the door. We ' re unaccustomed to this solitary black. Yet now dim shapes are noticed here and there. Give us a little while to adjust And maybe we can prove ourselves as worthy here As was required to climb the narrow path Then cross the threshold of the towering door. Diana Whittinghill, Class Poet [ 15]
