[ 14] Class Poem The way was steep and dim the path The rocks we kicked aside to clear the way Oft went astray, and hit the man behind, As we were struck with stones tossed back by those ahead. But once or twice we, dodging, happened to look down And found a spot of beauty hid, or up And there ! Behind that wisp of cloud The sun, eternal cheerer, peeked, Then poured out light upon our way for just a while. The way was hard and rough the path but now we ' ve reached a plain Where stands a door for each of us. Great - Dark - Forbidding in its aweful majesty. No way but forward for the door has opened. But still behind, as we turn wistfully and gaze We see time spent in labor seem as play And playtime then as riotous gaiety now The ever-lengthening void between what is and was Cannot be crossed but adds a charm to things now gone. A step - we ' re on the other side. Yet close enough To know security in those far things beyond the open door. This side is dark, And darker still as shuts the door. We ' re unaccustomed to this solitary black. Yet now dim shapes are noticed here and there. Give us a little while to adjust And maybe we can prove ourselves as worthy here As was required to climb the narrow path Then cross the threshold of the towering door. Diana Whittinghill, Class Poet [ 15] Senior Jake McLaughlin, Most Personality; Diana Whittinghill, Wittiest and Most Personality Royce Tripp, Most Mischievous; Hampton Teague, Laziest and Wittiest Superlatives Ellen Doak, Most Naive; Brownie Fitch, Class Anne Jacobs, Best Dressed; Don Christopher, Baby Best Dressed and Best All Around Tom Maultsby, Most Popular and Most Athletic; Mary Lou Williams, Best All Around Evelyn Matthews and Bucky Vickers, Best Dancers Mary Haley, Biggest Flirt; Nathale Crittendon, Most Talented and Biggest Flirt Class History We, the members of the Senior Class of 1952 bid fond farewell to CHHS and take this one last chance to reminisce about our four years in high school. As gouche freshmen we stumbled through the maze of bewildering class schedules, wilted beneath the superior gaze of an upper classman, were stumped by the com- plexities of amo, amas, amat, and the mysteries of xy - 2ab. Football — a new coach, Bill Grice, led us to that well remembered Laurinburg game! The Freshman Class, not to be surpassed by the Junior-Senior, gave the second annual Freshman-Sopho- more under the leadership of class president, Borden Abernethy. Then we entered our sophomore year with not quite as much exuberance, but certainly more self-assurance. That year led by class president, Jake McLaughlin, the Sophomore Dunce Dance was given — the first in the history of CHHS! Biology class was a great experience, particularly dissecting grasshoppers. We found out, too, that school wasn ' t just for fun and decided to try studying. Our junior year was full of turbulent class meetings with Barry Winston, class president, trying to maintain some order. Everyone went money-mad at the thought of having the Junior-Senior in the Tin Can; however, we came through in grand style, using he South Sea Islands as our theme — grass skirts and all! At long last Snack Shack funds came through with a bright, shiny bus for the school to use for trips, By the end of our junior year we thought no other year could be better. That was before we became Seniors! That all important senior year finally came. We felt almost like Freshmen again with the completion of the new school and so much room to wander around in. Some- one might have wondered what was being given away those first few times at as- sembly — just the Seniors trying to get a seat on the front row. Fair is foul, and foul is fair — yes, we began Shakespeare! Calling cards, class rings, a diploma — that was our senior year led by Tom Maultsby as class president. Having left with you these experiences we can only hope that all of the classes to follow will have half so much fun. GOOD-BYE Evelyn Matthews Class Historian [18] Who ' s Who of 1962 Mr. Donald Christopher, President of the Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum Factory, has recently had the honor system installed there. Merchandise consuption by the employees has improved immensely. Mrs. Charlie Pitts, the former Miss S. J. Capps, and her five girls have become a female sextet version of Jim Thorpe, All American, vacillating between that and their private newspaper. Charles Best and Ernest Crawford are instructers in the agriculture department at State Col- lege, while Eddie Williams and John Maddry have installed a branch of the department at U.N.C. Miss Joanne Tilley has just released her invention of the never-emptying coca cola bottle. Mr. Barry Winston and Miss Diana Whittinghill are threatening Shakesphere ' s dramatic pro- minence with their production on the Broadway stage of The Shaming of the True . The Misses Clara Mae Barbour, Margaret Dixon and Dottie Anne Pendergrass have become very successful business women, now owning a large chain of department stores in the Carolinas and Virginia. Mr. T. E. Vickers and F. J. Scott, who were prominent society leaders of Chapel Hill are now traveling the country as talent scouts for M.G.M. Miss Ellen Doak was recently chosen Miss Trigonometry of 1962 . Dr. Borden Abernethy has just performed a series of operations on the President of the United States for siliancot gniworgin (in-grown toe-nail). Two of CHHS ' s greatest athlete ' s have recently gained fame. Mr. Brownie Fitch is now basket- ball coach at Tulane University while Mr. Tom Maultsby was chosen to play on the Olympic football team. Mrs. Bob Thompson, the former Miss Rabbit Webb, has bought half interest on the Safe- Way Baby Diaper Service with the ulterior motive of clothing her own four boys. Scientists Jane Durham, and Carolyn and Rachel Thompson are experimenting with growing fried egg-plants in the Sahara Desert. Mr. Carl MacPherson has finally made his millions with the invention of a television-telephone. Mrs. Betsy West and Mrs. Carolyn Husbands have settled in Central America where their spouses are deepening the Panama Canal. Pete Pollander is on a government project counting the square inches of ice at the South Pole. Miss Iris Merritt is working with him, in her spare time choosing Eskimo girls for John Robert Powers ' Southern branch. Hampton Teague and Nathale Crittenton have run Martin and Lewis to Siberia with the help of their publicity manager, Jake McLaughlin. Glynn Lane, Jeanette Hackney, Merle Tyson, and Wilda McDade are employed as private secretaries to five-percenters at the Capitol in Washington. The latest news from Harold Mann and Grady Sturdivant reveals that they are recovering from saddle sores accumulated while rustling cattle in Texas. Miss Mary Lou Williams has just had her new book, An Easier Method of Shorthand pub- lished. Miss Evelyn Matthews is now teaching The Bop at Arthur Murray studios in New York. Mr. Bob Patterson and his wife Sandra have been holding secret meetings with John L. Lewis discussing the establishment of a theater usher ' s union. Miss Mary Haley is making a big sensation putting over torchy songs in a dim-lit cafe on Canal Street in New Orleans. Mr. Charles Green, our country ' s vice-president, recently appointed Miss Anne Jacobs as good will ambassador to London where she spends her free time designing gowns for Queen Elizabeth II of England. Lee Gutherie, Neal Harrington, and Dick Slack, are the highest paid models in Sears Roebuck ' s Catologue because they look so unusually attractive in blue-jeans and oversized T-shirts. Mr. Russell Bullock and Miss Norma Baldwin are currently starred in the Broadway musical hit Life with Mrs. Schinhan accompanied on the piano by Miss Barbara Bright. Mr. Ronnie Mann and his wife, Libby, were last seen in the A-Model headed for Florida with their two sets of red headed quintuplets.
