But I will tell you now, ld rather see than be one VARIETY VIE Volume Probably the Last June, 1965 Editor Carlyle Harrison CLASS OF 49 HAS REUNION The little village of Chapel Hill was yesterday the scene of the 1949 Class Reunion Most of the members came from Hollywood where they are making movies UD and big money UD The reunion was held at the outdoor pool of Woollen Gym in order to prevent home sickness Among the personalities was Director Bill Bland and his newest star Jane Cate Branson Hobbs the great pretzel manufacturer and movie producer was also there looking for some place to spend his money Roger Peele North Carolina Senator was the guest of honor Anne Voorhis and Hubert Durham currently star ring in Granny s Grinnmg Grandchildren were seen amid the group grinning as usual A special treat for the guests was Victor Hartung famous violinist who played on his two string violin Vic says that two strings help him avoid confusion of strings and do not make as much nois P H Quinlan of the radio show Quinlan Quibbles and bandleader Clyde jeFl'erson were sporting new con vertibles and new blondes The reunion also included some cheers led by Nancy Blocksidge Pro cheerleader Nancy is working for Campbells Soup now She is the author of that famous yell Campells Campbells soup soup soup Come on gang let s root root' Another famous personality at the reunion was Bill I 16 Foister photographic editor for Esqulre Magazine He brought hlS pretty pin up Trillxs Hackney, Wl him and they made quite a splash Cboth of them fell into the poolj The cllmax of the reunion was reached when Bill Leighton founder of the newly formed Down with Women Club made a speech on The Woman s Place is In the Home After his speech he was mobbed by a group of indignant women led by Betsy Teague and Dana Phipps The reunion ended by serving refreshments prepared by Sylvla Sparrow, and the guests enjoyed the cold coffee and hot cookies very much CARNIVAL COMES TO TOWN Come on let s go to the Carnival was the familiar saying in town yesterday as John Jernigan brought his Hollywood Carnival to town The Carnival had many acts including the Whirling Girlies Floorshow starring Barbara Andrews Lenorris Tripp and Evange line Crawford Don Mullis was master of ceremonies but he had to be replaced because he kept hooking pretty girls with the end of his cane If you heard a banjo that was Doug Harrell and his minstrels Billy Watts xx as singing There was also a midget act starring Patsy Council Ann Abernathy had her girls basketball team at the carnival for a game with the All American Peroxides , . . . . , , . - , th . . Class H1story 1945 Yes lt was a long t1me ago that 118 freshmen entered CI-IHS for the first t1me a l1tt1e scared and exc1ted and try1ng desperately to look as 1f they d been here for four years already The first year was mostlx uneventful as far as accompl1shments go We were busy adjustmg ourselves to the new s hedule makmg frxends jomlng clubs and some of us were even tak1ng t1me out to study' We d1d g1VC a bang up Sadxe Hawkms Day Fest1val under the leadersh1p of class pres1dent john jermgan 1946 was an exc1t1ng year Early 1n the spr1ng we moved 1nto the new bu1ld1ng new w1ng rather We had been lookmg forward to lt for months It was a glor1ous change from the dungeon darkness of the Grammar School base ment and we really felt 11ke h1gh school students Coll1er H111 was our pres1dent thlS year and our toplc of conver satxon usually centered around Mr Plttman wlthout whom l1fe would have been dull 1ndeed B111 Bland pres1dent got thlngs started 1n a b1g way dur1ng our Junxor year We sold magazmes l1ke mad haw ked Bowers at football games slaved on a Jumor play Wh1Ch was a r1ot 1n more ways than one and ln all we turned up w1th S537 50 for our jumor Sen1or prom W1th gay and colorful decorat1ons done on the c1rcus theme we turned Carol1na Inn s ballroom 1nto an exc1t1ng carmval spot for an evenmg Result the best JUUIOI' Semor 1n s hool h1story' The year was marked by frequ nt and stormy class meetlngs but we managed to save S110 to start the H1ll1fe fun d As lS usual our 3Ct1V1tlCS d1dn t really branch out unt1l 1948 our last year at CI-IHS We had now dwmdled to 38 boys and 37 gxrls as compared to our Oflglnal number of 118 Gu1ded by sen1ors the Proconran expanded to a larger b1 monthly and captured good rat1ngs nn cr1t1cal contests It even managed to save over S100 for next year an unprecedented happen1ng B111 Bland student body pres1dent helped promote the paper dr1ves and carr1ed on a never endmg campa1gn for campus cleanl1ness The H11l1fe ed1ted by jane Webb and B111 Fo1ster expanded 1ts Jumor sect1on Marvel of all marvels It came out on schedule' We saw a Rec Club formed w1tnessed the Scroll magaz1ne bemg fCV1VCd Two 1SSUCS of the Scroll were prmted dur1ng the last four months of the school year We grew up a lot that year w1th the draft and war poss1b1l1t1es gett1ng front page attent1on We set a record for Jo1n1ng extra curncular 8Ct1V1t1ES and sen1or class members really shone 1n sports However our brlghter underclassmen outshone us 1n the matter of good grades We lost some of our classmates to other schools and not all of us graduated that had started out But we had a fine r1ch t1me We are 1eav1ng a top class student body and we certa1nly aren t afra1d for the future of our school We Just W1Sh we could be around to see the thmgs that w1ll surely happen 1n the near future Other graduatmg classes w1ll see a complete new bu1ld1ng an enlarged student body of 300 or more a new athlet1c Held a more modern Rec more money for the school s publ1cat1ons a pr1nted Scroll and new school busses We Just can t help be1ng a 11tt1e w1stful as we close one more chapter of our short l1ves Th1s IS a four year per1od we w1ll never forget To all the sen1or classes yet to be good luck' And to dear ole CHI-IS so long' Janet Green Class Hrstorzan 1 15 l 0 - 1 1 - - 1 - s 1 1 1 , . ., V. . . r .. v. . , , . l ' 1 ' - 1 . 1 1 - 1 1 1 . , . .. . .
