Throughout high school one ofthe most meaningful things we learn Makin' Friends. Our friends, once made, become many things to us. They are the tired faces in the hall Monday morning that still manage to offer a smile. They are the ones we spend Saturday night driv- ing around with stereo cranked They mean more to us than material possessions. We also learn that one day we'Il wake up and all our wild weekends and experiences will be nothing but memories. 'N MA K IN ' MINDS X . is X wg: .ty In CHS our teachers are friends. They teach more than what's in the book. Many classes are fun, however we do buckle down and do serious studying. Instead of working against us, our teachers work for us, going out of their way to help. As teachers and students pass each other in the hall, they feel a bond of friendship. 12 f .., zffik . My .2 fx 2. if . 111 Q ' I sv sl 3 2 After only eleven years ot existence, our school is respected as one of the outstanding schools in Kansas, A bond links together the students and staff. That bond is pride which is growing with the age ofthe building. The surrounding communities contribute to the level ol pride in our school by their interest and support of sports, speech, arts and music. . . all our activities. When we compare students, buildings, communities and pride with other schools, we are thankful that CHS is the place we call home. 7, Ln, L., . The pungent body odor of these people added to the nausea I was already feeling after riding the Bullet. The smell of popcorn, hot dogs, and cotton candy filled my head, making it swim. I felt the grit and grime clinging to my face from the humid air. My knees trembled like jello as I ran through the street while pushing and shoving my way to the bathroom, barely in time. sg BA a. Larry's IGA, Harper and Anthony Serving Tennis Bells One of the most difficult aspects of playing tennis is the serve. Many hours of practice must be involved to perfect an effective serve. The task can be made easier by following these simple directions. First, cook one half pound of hamburger and separate into small chunks. Now pour in two cups of taco sauce. Heat slowly. Next, cube two large tomatoes and add to sauce in pan. Bring sauce to a boil. Spread one cup of shredded lettuce on the serving plate. When sauce boils, turn off stove and prepare three tennis balls. Place balls on plate and pour sauce over them, sprinkling grated cheddar cheese over them after doing so. Serve warm, with a tall glass of ice tea. This recipe makes three servings. - 1. xx. 1 ff tw T -Let' gmt' we , ,',9',sl,, jg? gf 113 s rrrf -f in fit Rf 245i 3 f 5 I ir, 1' ' f,- , gig-j. ' . 4 -. 'wr tv PRA + '. as it u 0 'v X Nh B - A. Larry s IGA Harper and Anthony Bad Memories It started out to be a normal Friday night, just riding around listening to the radio playing our song. It was about 12: 15, time to head home to meet the curfew. We had just pulled out into the highway heading west towards Harper when we noticed, there in our lane heading straight for us, a pick-up traveling rather fast. l'll never forget the look on my date's face and in his eyes as if he had seen a ghost. He wasn't sure what to do but natural reflexes made him push my head down into the seat while he gave the steering wheel a hard jerk towards the ditch. l remember screaming out and hearing the screeching tires and the loud noise of metal ripping and clanging as it flew onto the highway. After the jolt, I looked up in time to see the shattering glass falling in on us. All l could hear was the roaring ofthe engine caused by his foot still on the accelerator. I can never get into a car without remembering the wreck and praying it will never happen again. C 4 Presented by . O Town and Countrylumber Co ,g X P cu 5 ,. 6 M'-if r,- AQ X X X X 47,1- a. I llllllllllll S ev Stat' X The Slopes The long weekend at Easter break often gives time for skiing. The 500 mile trip to Vail or Keystone takes hours, but as we turn on the snow packed road high in the mountains, we see the lodge so pretty with snow and icicles and know we are there. Skiers are busy everywhere, practicing turns and new tactics for stopping. Riding up on the lift is a big thrill being thirty-five to forty feet up in the air, and mountain scenery is visible for miles around. Looking at the tops of trees makes me feel I am on the top of the world. I just sit there for a minute, closing my eyes, feeling the warmth of the sun on my face. Far off, I can see skiers shushing down the slopes, leaving trails of scallops in the snow and know that I will soon be with them. .inf-, -IXFWNUI' ,x - - is-w A Q'aX,j t'i- vjy., ily- K. 4 , -nf. 4 -,, ,a4- ' Presented by Mardis Electric a. Bill Starks, Auctioneer and Broker .7 S T fY l- rl Q First Date I stared from our front window at the carlights beaming down the street. The long anticipated car pulled to a stop at the side of the curb. I watched as the dome light came on in the car, I wanted to throw open the door and run out, but one shouldn't seem eager on a first date, so I sat tight. I knew I had blown my cool though, when I pulled open the door in between the ding and the dong of the doorbell. I stood there staring at the gorgeous male specimen in front of me, too dumbfounded to speak. I had seen him in the halls a million times but this time was different. He asked me if I was ready, it seemed rather obvious, but it sounded like a good question to ask. A con- gregation of family gathered in the living room to observe the new attraction, but I felt much too selfish to share, and I didn't want their curious stares to scare him away. l followed him to the car at his heels all the way, watching his every move. He led me to the car door and pulled it open for me, im- pressing me so. The tan Mercury appeared old and big, and a dent in the front fender looked as if it had been there awhile. He jok- ingly oalled it his Z-28, and told me he had it custom made, and all the kids at school en- vied him and his car. His humor began relieving all the first date tension, and I sat back in my seat, feeling my heartbeat return to its regular rhythm, lsmiled to myself, feel- ing quite pleased with myself and very im- pressed with him. l A. fgx The Home-Works 2 S 3.1 i Vb Smash Hit i The Chaparral Singers put in creative effort in their musical produotion Guys and Dolls. With difficult songs, costume changes and many lines, the actors were busy and had to be on their toes. A large changeable backdrop kept the stage crew hopping. Don't think you're too tough to cry, 'cause if this letter is being read to you, you're no tougher than we were. This letter was read to our football team several times over the last three years. As I listened to that letter my sophomore year, I thought, Well, I don't have to worry. I've got to make it through two more years first. And again my junior year, the team was close knit and worked hard together. But after we lost to Fredonia, I realized that the seniors would never play another high school football game. This last year, we all knew that this our last chance as seniors, and we worked harder than ever. After the final Haven game, my high school football career was over. As I undressed, it was as though I were watching myself, and I knew as I went through my routine that each thing I did would be for the last time. . . ever. The seniors went around the locker room saying things like, Been great playing with ya, Get 'em next year, and You're a heck of a player. Some ot these guys I had played football with for ten years! Over half of my life! When you're that close to someone for that long, you know them pretty well. As I looked around the locker room after everyone else had left, all I could think of was, Those '78 seniors were right. You do cry. The leaves whispered in the cool summer breeze and a beautiful orange-pink color was glowing on the horizon signaling the sunset's beginning. The reds, pinks, and oranges started mixing, each taking a little from the others to create new and totally different colors. Today everyone makes solitude sound terrible. Half the songs on the radio are about the joy of love and togethernessg the other half is about the pain of being alone. There have been times when my friends asked me to go out, and once we were there, I couldn't stand being around them. Before the night is over, I wish I had stayed home and listened to the radio. I've found that if I really try, I can have just a good a time alone as with fifteen other friends. Harper Pharmao y Lunchroom Eaters There are three types of eaters in the lunch- room: petite, moderately neato and chow-hounds. The petite eater eats with skill and grace. Every bite is a well practiced maneuver. A fork neatly held in the fingers, pokes miniature morsels of food into the mouth. Bites are usually small enough to starve a gerbil and are never spilled or dropped. The moderately neato group just eats in a regular way. They always follow the same food pattern every day. One moderately neato eater in the lunchroom eats meat, carbohydrates, vegetables, dessert and finishes off the dinner with a cool milk. The chow-hounds are the fun ones to watch. They act as if the food wasn't dead. The chow- hounds mutilate their food by shredding it with a fork, and then shoveling it into their mouths with a spoon. Chow-hounds get in a hurry too. Often they start throwing food into their mouth so fast, they miss. The food will hit their nose and will roll down onto the chair. Even this won't stop them. They'll eat it off the chairs! As the day progresses, however, the cottonballs unite and one by one: they form one big cloud. Magically growing and swelling. the billowing edges and mushrooming top dwarf all objects near by, giving the young storm a powerful appearance. Several hours after the big cloud is formed, nature seems to transform good to evil as the thunderstorm turns dark and shadowy, bringing secondary features to life. Thunder is heard from the very heart of the storm. lts deep bellowing roar warns of the coming event. Lightning flashes out like fangs from the heavens. The wind blows with fierce intensity and has a sick-sweet smell to it. Finally it begins to rain and the storm is at its mightiest. Later, when the storm is gone, the sun breaks through the clouds in glorious victory.
