Station Left, Left, Left Right Left Getting ready for marching festival at W.S.U. last October took everyone's concentration and cooperation. We took a little out of each football game performance and added a few more songs to make the routine we would use for contest Mr Hodges was more particular about this performance than for the football game performances because of the judges He has a battery operated megaphone that he talks through to tell us to run back and do it again Some days all we did was run back When the day finally came to per form before the judges we were nerv ous lf we messed up Mr Hodges would be very disappointed and Chaparral has such a good history of doing well the pressure was really on When we got on the track before marching onto the field I was shaky and when I started to play my hands would hardly move But the long hard hours were worth it W received the best rating in class 4A . At times it is lonely when you don't have a ton of friends around you and you listen to other people plan their Fri- day nights together. Even walking down the hall can be lonely sometimes, not having anyone to say hello to and being too timid to say hello. People don't real- ize why you walk around the hall not saying anything, and think you are stuck up. lf only they knew. To be a loner does have it's good eb 4 d These Faces Sponsored by points, if you can handle the loneliness. You never have to worry about any secrets getting around about you because no one knows any. You don't get in the middle of people's problems or friend's arguments. You may have some people you talk to sometimes, but they don't get too close to you, and you don't get too close to them. Friendships like that are easier to keep. But Friday nights can be tough. I almost miss the bus because I can't decide what to wear. When I decide, I end up wearing clothes that make me hot all day. The day starts with Mr. Harmon shouting, Oh, what a beautiful day in KakeIand, and then reading the lunch menu. Since it's Friday, I feel kind of lazy and clean my purse instead of reading. Second hour I give mouth to mouth to a dummy. I forgot to take the gum out of my mouth. Before I know it, it goes shooting out onto the floor. Luck- ily, I didn't choke Recessi Annie. Third hour flies by just fine, singing in Chaparral Singers. Lunch time. While scarfing down the luscious fish, Tammie gripes because she has yesterdays cake on her plate. Lunch time is over and, as usual, Mr. Buck brings out the Friday Geometry Pop Test which should only take I5 min- utes but takes the whole hour. Fifth hour is a joy sitting in the library listening to Abbey make clever jokes, watching Eileen make goo goo eyes, while Lana points out all the hunks in an Alabama yearbook. The cafeteria is screaming during the Coke break. Mrs. Puls won't take a free half of a can of Coke but does take a couple of Skittles. Mr. Roberts is in dream world number three. And here I am in last hour writing and hoping this hour will go a little faster. lt's a beautiful day outside and in a few min- utes, it's the weekend! Aa bV a. The office is the center of activity in the school. Everyone should be an office proctor at least once. It's not hard work, it's mostly just taking phone calls from people who leave messages. The first mistake I made was when the Superintendent called for Mr. Brown and I accidentally pushed the wrong button to hang up on the Superintend- ent. Another fun thing is turning on the radio for a class. If you push the button up instead of down you turn on the intercom instead of the radio. The whole class gets to listen to everything you and the other proctors talk about. What is bad is when the girl you are talk- ing about is in that classroom! Being an office proctor is also fun because you get to see who gets called to the office and why. '.:... ' bl a P a. lanice Hughbanks clears the first hurdle in a heat that she went on to win b. We had a pretty good season. We were only the second team to tie or win the league title in Cha- parral history, The biggest disappoint- ment in our season was the semi-finals of the sud-state tournament. We beat Andover in the first round and were up against a tough team, Rose Hill. They were ranked 4th in the state and came to the tournament with an undefeated record. We knew that we had a chance to win if things would go our way. 'fl I could tell in the first few minutes of the game that it was going to be a long night. The first quarter was all fouls, on us of course, and the second quarter we couIdn't make any baskets. At the end of the first half I could tell that this was my last game. At first I didn't really feel bad about losing because I was so happy there wouldn't be any more practice. Smith, Superintendent of USD 361, has been named one of seven winners of the 1981 Kansas Master Teacher award given annually by Emporia State University. Mr. Smith has been superintendent for fourteen years. Mr. Smith was hired by USD 361 to help pass the already once- defeated bond issue to build a new high school. In these four- teen years he has seen his initial mission accomplished in the form of Chaparral High, the successful and celebrated home of the Roadrunners. Though Mr. Smith's expertise is in personnel, school finance, bond issues and building programs, his major interest is the suc- cess of the students. Harper County NEA, in submitting his nomination wrote, llfor a man five years from retirement who has served at the ltop' for thirty-two of his thirty-four years amid the ups and downs of Kansas education, he is indeed a man of experience in our state. Those who know him admire his wit and cherish his friendship. They are well aware of his just and fair discipline and his demands for excellence. There are few in his field who can match his record in the state of Kansas.
