Text from Pages 1 - 52 of the 1958 volume:

THE BEAR Published by the Students of CHANDLERS HIGH SCHOOL 1958 Auburn, Kentucky When the books close, and the last bell rings, And carefree days are lost to mundane things— When nostalgia strikes, and your memory wanes, And you remember the faces but not the names— Pick up your yearbook and leaf it through, And remember the days so dear to you. 2 Dedicated To our Mothers and Fathers — whose interests have been in the improvement of our lives — whose love and encouragement have been inspi- rational — and whose never-ending sacrifices have made possible these four years of high school — we respectfully dedicate “The Bear of 1958. The Class of 1958 3 Mr. Morris Shelton — Principal To our principal, Mr. Shelton, we express our heartfelt gratitude for a course well-planned. It was he, who four years ago, mapped out our courses and kept us going in the right direction. Although the going has sometimes been rough, we have reached our cherished goal as a result of his plan- ning. Due to his wise and superb planning we have been able to reach our goal without hitting too many snags. We doff our caps to him and say, Thanks, for having kept us in line with the proper procedure. 4 The Bear Staff Editor.............. Associate Editor . . • Business Manager . . I began to imagine what the future would hold for my class- mates of 1958. I can visualize the following: Boyce Adams is still the same except that he is now a member of the state troopers and, as usual, is still very careful of curves. (Of any kind.) Jean Shannon is a co-owner of Shannon's Lincoln-Mercury. She is now engaged in the process of testing the '68 Lincoln. Her test driver is Imogene Powell who's better than most men. too. Never a dull moment. Dorothy Coles is the owner of Dorothy's Shop, the most talked about beauty shop in Logan County. Jerry Ann Marshall is getting married again. She just arrived from Reno a few weeks ago. She was busy there getting rid of her third mistake. Jo Nell Gillum is business manager, secretary, and bookkeeper for Scott's and Bonds of New York. Anna Glenn Rittenberry is working as a bookkeeper. It's hard enough to believe she is working, much less as a bookkeeper. Betty and Caffa Thomason joined the W.A.F. a few months ago. Caffa is still here in the U.S., but Betty is stationed in Germany. I suppose they're both saving a lot of money. Tom Sams owns a large winter resort at Miami Beach. Florida. If you thought he was a big man at Chandlers, you should see him now. (No picture.) Glenn Raymer is a man-about-town of Las Vegas. Recently, his name has been linked with such personalities as Susan Harrison, Judy Scott, and Natalie Wood. Bobby Woodward and Wilbur Powell have gone into partnership. They own a mortuary in Russellville. Lately, business has been picking up, as it seems some people are just dieing to get a free ride in their new spaceship hearse. Their motto? We'U be the last to let you down. George Marshall has won fame as the handsomest red-headed leading man in Hollywood. He is also in great demand as a TV artist. That's all but me. ole faithful Chuck Stone. I'm not one of the alumni yet. but I'm still trying. 26 Last Will and Testament We, the members of the Senior Class of Chandlers High School, being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this, our last Will and Testament in the manner following: Firstly: To the faculty, our appreciation for their patience, helpfulness, understanding, and guidance. Secondly: To the school in general, all our traits of character--good, bad, and indifferent. Thirdly: As individuals and singly we bequeath as follows: I, Boyce Adams, leave my ability for safe driving to Billy Joe Hamilton. You need it, Kid! I, Dorothy Coles, leave my ability to laugh to Catherine Deberry. 1, Jo Nell Gillum, leave my hiccups to anyone who will take them. Good luck. I, George Marshall, leave my ability to play ball to my brother, Wayne. I, Jerry Ann Marshall, leave my ability to talk, to my sister, Marylin. 1, Imogene Powell, leave my ability to get into trouble to my little sis, Sammie. I, Wilbur Powell, leave my ability to win on the World Series to Charles Simmons. I, Glenn Raymer, alias Glenn Copeland, leave my alias to Gary Hall. It may be useful to you too. Gary. I, Anna Glenn Rittenberry, leave my knowledge of International Problems to Thelma Cox. I, Tom Sams, leave my ability to eat and sleep in class to Vernon Epley. Use it wisely, Vernon. I. Jean Shannon, leave my ability to skip school to my little sis, Diane. I. Chuck Stone, alias Charles Rhodes, leave my position as teacher's pest to Joe Gillum. Butter 'em up, Joe. I, Betty Thomason, leave my ability to actually like geometry to Sue Cornelius. 1. Caffa Thomason, leave my quietness to Frances Nell Duncan. You need it, Fran. I, Bobby Woodward, leave my ability to get along with people to everyone. 27 Boosters Carlos Shelton Bill's Shoeshop Time Finance Company The Sweet Shop Bro. Valedictorian Jo Nell Gillum, with an average of 10.80 for the entire four years, will represent the Class of 1958 as Valedictorian. Salutatorian Imogene Powell, with an average of 9, will represent the Class of 1958 as Salutatorian. 29 ♦Using this grading system, A is 11, A- is 10, B is 9, etc. The Basketball Squad Cheerleaders (CLOCKWISE) Doris Spain, Shelby Hinchee, Muriel Wright, Imogene Powell, Ann Simmons. 30 Billy Joe Hamilton Tom Sams Wendell Belcher Herman Parker George Marshall John Gilliam Our Culinary Artists Edna Hall, Regina Duncan, Eva Sanders Bus Drivers Othar Hester, Richard Fisher, Therwin Sanders, Albert Anderson, Edd Rittenberry. 32 4-H Club Talent Show Chandlers' 4-H Club, directed by Mrs. Ed Martin, entered the county-wide talent contest and came off with first place. This entitled us to enter the regional contest in Bowling Green, and they won again. Needless to say, we nearly burst with pride, but the acme of the entire production was an invitation to Lexington to present the program at the state 4-H Achievement Week. With contributions from all over the county, we boarded a bus at Russellville, spent a hilarious night at a motel, and presented the program to one of the most appreciative audiences ever. We want to express our deepest appreciation to Mrs. Martin for her untiring efforts, to our leaders, and to the teachers and parents who helped make this event one of the greatest and happiest of our lives.
