' A GLEN WAKELY KENNETH HERD REECE MURRAY TaCklC-Jl1Ili0r End-Sophomore End-Sophomore ff, E 3 The Chandler Lions of 1951 was one ofthe gamest teams ever to don the Red and Blue. Under the able coaching of Shelby Wyatt and Warren Carmichael, the Lions compiled a season record of 9 wins, and 2 losses. The Chandler -Lions opened their 1951 football sea- son Thursday, September 13, with a resounding win over an inexperienced team from Casady of Oklahoma City 35-13. Friday, September 14, they traveled to Okemah where the Lions were defeated 19-6 on two bad breaks by pass interceptions, one for a touchdown. The next week the Lions took on the Yale Bulldogs at Yale, where they defeated a very inferior team by a score of 52-13. On the 28th of September the St. Gregory Knights traveled to Chandler and battled the Lions on our home grounds with the Lions coming out on the long end of a 7-0 score. The following Friday the Morris Eagles came to town and although they weren't expected to have much they battled the Lions all through the game, but the Lions won 41-0. The Tecumseh Savages came to town and in what was expected to be a hard fought game the Lions came out the victor 39-7. The Lions traveled to Davenport the next week and in a hard fought battle won, by capitalizing on the breaks 20-0. The Beggs Demons and the Lions locked horns in a battle at Chandler on October 26 and the Chandler Lions came from behind to win in a thriller 33-12. On November 2, the Lions traveled to Stroud to take on the Tigers in the deciding game in District 15-B. The Tigers scored first but the Lions came from be- hind to score and then hold them the rest of the game, threatening several times to win 7-6. The following week the Lions defeated the Prague Red Devils in a District and Conference fray 39-6 to win the District 15-B and 66 Conference champion- ships. In the Bi-District playoffs the Lions lost to a good Fairfax team by the score of 19-6. BILL MENDENHALL, all-district end, was a good defensive end and pass receiver. EDGAR BROOKS, all district end, was a top pass receiver and a good blocker. HOBERT RAGLAND was a good pass receiver and also a good blocker. TOM MITCHELL, all-district tackle, was one of the roughest tackles in the district. GEORGE CALVIN was a good blocker and was used at both guard and tackle slots. RAY HELM. all-district guard, was the most under- rated member of the team. DALE CALVIN, all-district guard, was one of the best defensive guards in the district. DAVID ERWIN, all-district back, was a good passer and runner and was also the punter. DON TRENT. all-district back, was used at various positions and was a rugged player. LEE HELM was a hard charging fullback. DON ARTERBERY was the fastest man on the team and could always be counted on. RALPH CAMPBELL was an excellent defensive back. DONIVAN WADE was good defensive safety. GLEN WAKELY was one of the roughest tackles in the district. BILL WESTFALL was another hard running back and good blocker. VERNON CLOVER was a good play caller and blocker. TOMMY WILSON, Sophomore center, could always be counted on. ., w ,, gmmf EEA. 'M w fill. The Lionettes of 1952 will be remembered as one of the most aggressive teams in the past few years at Chandler High. They also had plenty of reserve strength to back up the regulars. In the Oklahoma Baptist University tournament the Lionettes were defeated by the Meeker Bulldogs, who went on to win the tournament. In 'the County tournament they were defeated by Wellston, who also won the tournament. The Lionettes will not be hard hit by graduation in numbers for Willa June Welch is the only senior on the squad but still they will miss her speed and aggressiveness. S. ,X Under the able coaching of Slielby Wyatt and War- ren Carmichael and the able assistance of Supt. Dave Phillips, the team made good showing at the Bison Relays, Central State Relays, and the Aggie Relays. In the County Track Meet the Lions avenged the defeat of last year by winning the meet with 74- points to almost double the output of the Stroud Tigers, the 1950 champions. ln the Regional Meet at Norman the next week the Lions had a fierce battle with Purcell for top honors with the Lions winning out by the count of 69M2 to Purcellis 63.
