Machineable Heart What was deemed as a major medical and scientific breakthrough was per- formed December 2, when sixty-one year old Barney Clarke was given the world's first artifical heart. Clarke suf- fered from an inoperable heart disease, which doctors say would have taken his life, had he not under gone the implant operation. The implant was more suc- cessful than even the doctor who per- formed the operation, Dr. William DeV- ries, had expected. Although emergency surgery had to be done, Clarke was standing on his own less than three weeks after the successful implant. Money Woes Money woes greeted the returning students as the nation debated as to whether we were in a deep recession or a light depression. The business slump was the longest experienced in post-war times. Unemployment was the biggest problem facing the country with a ten per cent rate, which was the highest in forty-two years. Buying a home became harder due to high interest rates, and Wall Street set new high and low re- cords. Ice Crash Air Florida flight 737 plunged into and through the iced over Potomac Riv- er. Seventy-eight lives were lost in the air crash with survivors being plucked out of the icy waters by helicopter and heroic onlookers. One crash victim sacrificed his own life to save five other passengers by refusing a life-line and passing it to the others. The FFA blamed the crash on ice build up on the Boeing 737's wings. NFL Strike Two games into the season and Mon- day morning quarterbacks lost their Sunday pastime. It was teams against owners with the public losing in the long run. Players demanded a say in their own management and a piece of the rev- enues that their Sunday moves generate. Low attendance, bad fan reaction and less money greeted the players after set- tling the strike. Current Events 177

176 Current Events urrent Times Falkland War Seventy-four days of war to decide who would rule a small group of islands populated by more sheep than people. Over one thousand lives were lost as Great Britain and Argentina traded na- val shots. Argentina lost its largest war- ship, a World War lltcruiser, and Brit- ain lost its HMS Sheffield cruise. England prevailed with Argentina forces surrendering June 14. The issues which started the small war are yet to be settled satisfactorily to both sides. Tampered Tylenol A helpless nation stood by as an un- known and unstoppable maniac laced at random Tylenol capsules. Seven victims died after taking the tampered capsules filled with cyanide. Law enforcement searched in vain for a solution, but it was not known if the tampering took place before or after the capsules left the fac- tory. The poisonings brought out the copy- cat crimes which made Halloween night a troubled time for concerned parents. In some towns the traditional trick or treat festivities were banned. But, Ty- lenol lifted their recall in December and the shelves were stocked with tamper re- sistant packages. Breshnev Dead The Soviet Union's President Leonid Brezhnev, who had ruled for over eigh- teen years, died November 10, ofa heart attack. Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov, former KGB head, assumed the reins of the Communist Party leadership. Presi- dent Reagan dispatched Vice President Bush and Secretary of State George Shultz to Moscow to attend the Soviet leader's funeral. Insanity Plea The insanity plea was questioned when John Hinckley was found not guilty, by reason of insanity, of attempt- ing to assassinate President Reagan. Twenty-seven year old Hinckley who shot the President for mental delusions related to actress Jodi Foster, also seri- ously injured Press Secretary James Brady. The verdict left in its wake a na- tionwide controversy over the insanity plea.
