TARWATER AND VAN GORDER RECEIVE DIVISIONAL HONORS The Central Division was very tough this year with five of the teams participating making the top ten in state standing at one time or another during the year. This considered, the 48 lettermen who contributed to CHS had a very successful season, ending with a 5 win, 5 loss Left: Ken Newcomer 1401 gains yard- age with guarded assistance from James Ricks 120l. Right: Nelson Bonet 1551 kicks off with aid of Dan Jones 1707. record overall and a 2 win, 4 loss record in B League competition. Leading the team as co-captains for the season were Seniors Sisto Rosales, Tim Deardorff, James Ricks, and Neal Tar- water, and Junior lVlarty Van Gorder. Sisto's season was cut short when he was hit hard with a serious knee in- jury in the Casa Grande game. The 21-19 victory over Mesa was the first ever in the history of CHS . Two touchdown passes by Tim Deardorff to Brian Shea 163 ydsl and John Horne 118 yds? and a game-saving interception by Preston Freeman with 55 seconds remaining on the clock secured the spectacular win. Neal Tarwater was the game's outstanding defense player. Other highlights of the season included a 24-8 win over Kofa with James Ricks, Ken Newcomer, and Brian Lamb leading the vic- tory of what Coach Foster felt was the best game the Wolves played in 1976. Points were accumulated with Brian Shea catching a TD pass from Brian Lamb and Nelson Bonet kick- ing a field goal and three extra points. Outstanding offense players were Allen Powell and Preston Freeman. Leading another big win over lVlarcos de Niza on their Homecoming, 17-7, was the defense headed by lVlike Sartin Allen Powell, and Randy Truxal . Outstanding on offense were Van Gorder, Deardorff, Ricks, and Shea. Neal Tar- water recovered the ball from a punt blocked by Phil Perry and I ran for a touchdown as again Nelson Bonet kicked a field goal and two extra points . Receiving awards for their accomplished performances during the season were Defen- sive Point Leader-Neal Tar- water1Sr.D, Leading Receiver- Brian Shea 1Jr.l, Offensive Back of the Year-J ames Ricks 1Sr.J, Offensive Line- man of the Year-lVlarty Van Gorder1Jr.J, Defensive Back of the Year-Neal Tarwater 1Sr.l, and Defensive Lineman of the Year-Allen Powell 1Sr.J ln addition to his other achievements, Senior Neal Tarwater was chosen as the lVlost Valuable Player and Nlike Nlaynard as lVlost lm- proved. Two of the Wolves also received Central Division 114 schools? honors. Junior Nlarty Van Gorder was selected as first team Center and Neal Tarwater was picked second team Linebacker.
