THE DHOW San Diego-based destroyer helps rescue drifting ship Associated Press MANAMA, Bahrain — Two U.S. Navy destroyers, one based in Nor- folk, have rescued 1 7 seamen drift- ing aboard a sheep-laden dhow in the stormy Gulf of Oman, a Navy spokesrmui reported Sunday. The spokesman, Lt. Rob Raine, said the Shrii Ismail Fakir Mahamad Madre, a 102-foot, 129-ton wooden vessel, had been stranded for four days before the rescue Saturday. The master of the Indian-regis- tered ship reported seeing 50 vessels during that time, but none stopped, Raine ' s report indicated. The dhow was first spotted at 8 a.m. by a helicopter from the Norfolk-based destroyer Arthur W. Radford over waters outside the S trait of Hormuz. The strait joins the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. A second Navy ship. The San Diego-based guided-missile destroyer CHANDLER, dispatched a small boat to help the dhow. Engineers from the CHANDLER exeunined the dhow ' s diesel engines but were unable to repair the cracked cylinder block or the dam- aged lube-oil cooler, Raine said.
