PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE 1972 Sometimes the world is too much with us, and we at Champlain feel that a college should be a kind of oasis into which we may retreat, tempo- rarily at least, from the noisy posturings of the world and the ugliness of crooked dealings in the market place. This is what we have tried to pro- vide for you here, and we hope it has worked for you as you have gone about the business of getting yourselves educated. It ' s all very well — and right —to tear down the walls of ivy with which a college is traditionally surrounded so that all may mingle and be in- volved as one. And it is also true that the traditionally hallowed halls of a college must be breached (to a point) so that all may be equally involved in education, rather than maintaining a few select intellectuals in their lit- tle ivory towers divorced from life and reality. But — and this a large BUT - - the great minds who have helped to fashion what is good and just in life today have taught us that the process of learning, of thought itself, must have an oasis of quiet from which the clamor of the public square with its demanding voices and urgent issues are for a little while shut out. Only in this little quiet of the mind can your thoughts leave behind the superficial snap judgments, and consider in proper depth and relationship to the overall of past, present and future, the development of a true perspective and philosophy . As you enter the rush and bustle of your world, remember always to return at least once a day to that quiet inner place where mind and spirit, so closely allied, can come together to bring you back into focus, show you where you went off the track, and reawaken you to what you know is right and just.
