e PRESENTED 3Y THE CLASS OF 1 H 5 6 We respectfully dedicate this volume of THE AURORA BOREALIS to Mr. Edward B. Dodds friend and advisor C to the CLASS OF 1955 r 9 Daniel E. Maher-Principal To the students : During the past several decade8 there have been tremendous and far reaching changes in the social, economic, and political aspects of our society. These changes have affected our educational out- look and planning. The schools of today differ greatly from those of yesterday and the schools of tomorrow will be far differ ent from those of today if we are to carry forward our way of life. The entire educational program in this democracy is based on the understanding that each child shall be given an opportunity for an education and that the individual need of each child shall be met in ways most meaningful for that child. You must help to pro- tect, defend, and promote that educational program in order for democracy to live. Democracy is more than a form of government. It is also a quality of personal living. Political democracy depends upon personal character, high moral ideas, and a capacity for individual self-government. You must always remember that with democracy go - obligations and pri- vileges - No government demands so much from its citizens as Democracy, and none gives so much in return. L£rs.
