✓ AURORA BOREALIS Class of 1951 CHAMPLAIN, NEW YORK TO Our inspiring teacher and sincere friend MR. HARRY NATHANIEL RUSACK We respectfully dedicate this volume of The Aurora Borealis To the Class of 1951 - As little children, your parents tried to guide and protect you by using the word DON'T . Then as you start -ed to grow and became somewhat independent, your parents and teachers admonished you to be more positive and DO constructive things which would fit you for the future. And now, as you complete your primary training, we say to you : BE the man or woman that you honestly would be ; BE the man or woman who dares to stand alone for the things that are right; BE the man or woman that those who love you expect you to be. Your ever-loying advisor t f T NEW EDUCATION VERSUS THE OLD I wish to congratulate the Seniors in having completed satis- factorily four years of high school. You have acquired a good education. It is an education not only as good as, or better than, can be found in most parts of the world, but it is distinctly better than the education your father or your grandfather had when they completed high school. There will be people who will tell you differently. High school students today can't spell. High school students can't use arithmetic. High school pupils don't know the facts of Amer- ican History. Modern education has its shortcomings, without question. But the plain fact is that it is better education than your fathers or grandfathers had. Schools have changed in the numbers and make up of the student body, in the subjects taught and, most of all, in the methods of teaching. In 1880 there were only about 67,000 high school students in all of New York State. Today we have approximately 7 +5,000 high school students in New York State. The subjects studied have changed because today's graduates are citi- zens of a state and a nation, and of a world, that are more com- plicated and challenging than ever before. Two American Educators undertook an interesting experiment. They found a complete set of examination papers - pupils' papers, teachers' corrections and all - that had been given in the schools of Boston in 185 . They gave these same examinations to modern day pupils in a number of American schools. The I85P+ pupils tak- ing the examination were described as The flower of the Boston Schools. The 20th Century pupils were unselected. The modern day pupils gave better and more correct answers than did the pupil of 185 . If it is true that you have received a better education, it is also true that there is a greater need today for better edu- cated citizens than there ever was before. Democracy is Govern- ment of the people, by the people, and for the people. You are the government. Democracy cannot exist without education. It is your responsibility to see that those younger than yourselves, and later your own children, have not only the advantages of edu- cation that you have had, but new and better advantages that fut- ure changes in education and in the world about us are sure to bring. The representatives are chosen by their classmates while the officers are chosen by members of the Student Council. The President and Treasurer must be Seniors and the Secretary, a Junior. The Council holds meetings to discuss and settle problems which arise during the school year. The officers elected for this year are: President----------Barbara Maynard Secretary----------Francis Proulx Treasurer---------------Joan Abood Standing: Barbara Maynard, Pauline Bechard, Veronica Ashline, Richard Rusack, Chudleigh Fosher, George Aubrey Seated: Beulah Horton, Beverly Maynard, Joan Abood, Eleanor Watts AURORA BOREALIS STAFF Editor-in-chief------------------—Veronica Ashline Editor----------------------------------Joan Abood Business Managers----Richard Rusack, George Aubrey Literary------------------------------------Barbara Maynard Treasurer-----------------------------------Beverly Maynard Photography-------------------------------Chudleigh Fosher Art-----------------------—-------- Beulah Horton Subscriptions-------Eleanor Watts, Pauline Bechard CLASS HISTORY One nice day in September, the fifth to be exact, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and thirty nine, six timid little children - Joan Abood, Veronica Ashline, George Aubrey, Barbara Maynard, Beverly Maynard, and Richard Wootton - made their en- trance into the first grade of the Champlain High School to be under the guidance of Miss Laura Robinson, our first grade teach- er. For a year and a half we attended classes there. Fire in December 19 +0 made it necessary to hold classes in the Methodist Church for the next two years. In 19 +2, we were happy to move into our newly built school, which has been a source of pride to us ever since. During the course of this year, Joan Abood left us to transfer to a school in Buffalo. She returned in September 19l+1+, and has remained with us since. Richard Rusack, a student previously of Chazy Central Rur- al School, also joined us in 19 2 to increase our number to six. In 19 5, Beulah Horton transferred from St. Mary’s Academy to our school. Our last year in grammar school was spent striving to meet the necessary qualifications of a high school student. After passing all of our examinations with flying colors, we were ready to take our place as Freshmen. We all remember the highlights of our first year in high school - our long dreaded initiation - which wasn’t so bad after all, - our Freshman Daze, - which was a great success, - our basketball score cards, - and achievements in public speaking. By this time, we acquired four new students - Ella Agnew from Rouses Point High School, Chudleigh Fosher, Joseph Wells, and George Filion, all from St. Mary's Academy. Their add- ition increased our ranks to twelve. During our Sophomore year, we were sorry to lose Joseph Wells and George Filion, who were unable to continue their stud- ies, and Richard Wootton, who transferred to Holderness School, Plymouth, New Hampshire. However, we gained as new classmates John Landry and Ray Kenny from Rouses Point High School. In our Junior year, John Landry and Ray Kenny returned to Rouses Point, while Pauline Bechard from Chazy, and Eleanor Watts joined us. The early leaving of Ella Agnew during our Senior year decreased our number, making us a class of ten. We have all diligently tried to prepare ourselves for the future. Yet we have not been alone. We have greatly appreciated the guidance that all our teachers have given, and owe much to them. So before leaving school to take our place in the world, we say: Thank you, teachers and friends. And to C.C.S. we bid a fond farewell, taking with us many cherished memories. RICHARD NATHANIEL RUSACK President By music minds an equal temper know, Nor swell too high, nor sink too low. Champlain Central, true to form, finished the season with one-half of the games won. Our Basketball Season proved a hectic one. With a brand new team on the floor, we won all games in the first half of our League Contest, and it looked like another championship year for C.C.S. However, Old Mister Sickness had to step in strik- ing one player after another, and when the season ended we had won seven (7; games and lost three (3). We went on to play, in our class, in the Sectionals. Here, against the snappy Keene Valley Team, we were again forced to taste defeat. We hope that when another year rolls around the boys will have profited by this year's mistakes and that C.C.S. will again be riding high. ACTIVITIES n GLEE CLUB 3rd. row: B. Maynard, D. Wootton, B.
