LAST WORD Wwe read in the Gospel of St. John, 'The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. . . In Him was life.' In the Word, the second Person of the Blessed Trinity, there is life, we know, and the source of all life, the life of the soul. Those who are dis- posed to receive Him are made the Sons of Light, the Sons of God, but the undisposed in heart and mind live in the darkness of death. But there is also life in the word of man. In fact, the word of man is the most logical and efficient way for other men to learn and the only way for them to enter into and to perpetuate the rich cultural mind. For all practical purposes, we think with words and communicate our inner life to other men through words, spoken or written. Words-the words of teachers and the words in books-are the life of the mind seek- ing a new birth in the minds of youth, to thrill them to the joy of knowing and the satisfaction of possess- ing the truth, to stimulate them to the aesthetic pleasure of beauty, and to rouse them to speak the fiat, so that the life in the word, the truths of fai and the truths of man, may become flesh in their live t s But teachers and students laboring together in the same vineyard of the Word-with the Word, by the Word, and through the Word-can and will produce life in the Word-possession and propagation of a Christian cultur- al heritage-and the fruit will remain.
