E n gli s h D t m e n t This year the English Department, under the leadership of Bro. Thomas Corbett, S.M., introduced a new format designed to give the student a better background for college. It included increased em- phasis on composition by requiring an output of at least one piece of writing a week from everyone, whether it be a book report, an essay or some type of fictional work, and by making these compositions worth 3OfM-Q of the final mark. Bro. Corbett also was responsible for having the best of these fictional works published in TARMAC. Another feature of this new system was the standardizing of the quarterly exams. Furthermore, the Department took the first step in introducing a World Literature course. This year's Sophomores and Juniors studied American Litera- ture, usually only a Junior course. This lays the foundation for the present Sophomores to take the new World course as Seniors while also having had all the other background necessary. English Literature will be moved to the Junior year, etc. Advanced placement courses and tests were also part of the English program during the past year. MR. GEORGE GRATTON. A.B. Studie epartment Under the chairmanship of Mr. Fox, the Social Studies Department has enlarged and enriched its cultural and educational content. The department has enlarged the Senior Gov- ernment courses by the additional study of both state and local governments, giving the student a more complete understanding of the subject. The History and Geography courses have been enriched through the rise of modern maps and globes. Many educational historical films have been presented to the students as a means of study through visual aids. A final climax, which has benefited many Social Stud- ies classes, has been the taking of field trips to many places of historical value, Brother McGrath retraces Sherman s march to the sea
