'fs Celebrates 25 years in the Society of Mary. l s Brother Darby breaks ground for the new wing. i TV l9l3 was not an especially auspicious year. The year before had seen the sinking of the Titanic , and the year following would see the start of World War I. l9l3, however, offered little in the way of historical drama. Yet on January 29th of this year, an event of great significance to Chaminade and her men took place. John Thomas Darby was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. He attended St. Gregory's grammar school in Phila- delphia and later, on August l5, l93O, at Dayton, Ohio, he embarked on his chosen vocation by profess- ing his vows in the Society of Mary. He was l7. That same year that saw John Darby profess his vows also saw Chaminade High School founded. ln 'T' l93O, Long Island was not the cosmopolitan area we know today. It was predominantly rural and pre- dominantly non-Catholic. It was also considerably prejudiced against Catholics, not to mention Catholic schools. ln the midst of the war years, in l942, Brother Darby began his l7 year association with Chaminade. He came as an English teacher. He had previously received his B.A. from Dayton University, and his M.A. from Catholic University and had taught in Covington, Kentucky, and in Alameda, California for New auditorium rises, as expansion continues 1 I
