www .aascaaz lf gil The history of Chamblee High School begins just before World War I. At that time, the Chamblee high and elementary schools were combined, and the school building was located on the present site of the First Baptist Church in Chamblee. The school would probably have stayed on its original grounds, but the U. S. Government bought the property to use as apart of Camp Gordon. The property for the present grounds was purchased from Mr. W. W. Mendenhall. The new building was partly complete by 1919, and theelementary and high schools opened with a combined enrollment of 120 students. Bonds were voted in 1924iby the citizens of the Chamblee School District to complete the school building, and ten class- rooms and an auditorium were added to the school. Then, in 1927, Chamblee became the first school in DeKalb County to have a gymnasium. In 1928, a consolidation of the Chamblee, Doraville, and Dunwoody school dis- tricts was formed under the name of the North DeKalb School District, and the high schools were all moved to Chamblee. In 1934, Federal aid made possible the addition of eight classrooms, a new gym, and a canning plant. The school was destroyed by fire on December 8, 19411 Local churches opened their doors to accommodate the students, and classes were also set up in buildings which had been used by the U. S. Engineers during the construction of Lawson Hospital. The school was rebuilt and ready for use by December 1942, and by 1947, nine classrooms, two shop rooms, and a new gymnasium had been built. The athletic field was com- pleted in 1950. Chamblee High won a first in 1934, when it became-the first school in DeKalb County to be accredited by the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. It had been accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission since 1926. Chamblee's history would not be complete without Mr. M. E. Smith, our beloved Prof, He has been a teacher, counselor, friend, and advisor to CHS students for thirty-seven years. He has never failed to lend a helping hand whenever one was needed, and his patience is boundless. So we gratefully dedicate this page to Prof, who himself is a part of Chamblee's history.
