The hisTory of Chamblee High School begins prior To World War One when The Chamblee School lHigh and ElemenTaryl was locafed on The presenT siTe of The Firsf BapTisT Church in Chamblee. The Unifed STaTes Governmenf. however. obfained This properfy as parT of Camp Gorden. Therefore, The properTy for The presenT siTe of Chamblee High School was obfained from Mr. W. W. Mendenhall. A new building was par- Tially compleTed in I9l9. and The high and elemenfary schools opened wifh an enrollmenT of one hundred and'TwenTy. ln l924 The ciTizens of The Chamblee School DisTricT voTed bonds for The complefion of The building. Ten classrooms and an audiforiurn were added as a resulT. A gymnasium, The firsT in DeKalb CounTy, was consTrucTed in l927. In I928 The Chamblee, Doraville, and Dunwoody School DisTricTs were consolidafed, and all The high schools were moved To Chamblee. The new name, The Norfh DeKalb School DisTricT, was adopfed affer The consolidafion. V , Wifh Federal aid. addifions of eighf classrooms. a new gymnasium and a canning planT were made in l934. - The school planf was desfroyed by fire on December 8. l94l. Tem- porary classrooms were sef up 'in local churches and in The buildings which had been used by U.S. Engineers during The consTrucTion of Law- son Hospifal. The presenT building was ready for use in December of l942. An addifion of nine classrooms. Two shop rooms and a new gymnasium was compleTed in I947. The AThleTic field was compleTed in I95O. ' Chamblee High School was accrediTed by The Georgia Accredifing Commission in l926. IT was The firsT school in DeKalb CounTy Tobe accrediTed by The Soufhern Associafion of Secondary Schools and Col- leges in I934. The hisTory would noT be compleTe wiThouT recognifion of Mr. M. E. Smifh who has served Chamblee High School for Thirfy-six years. He is a greaf example of someone devoTed To his profession.
