Class Prophecy FIME: May 23,1960 SCENE: Staff room at Chamblee High School Mary Kersey, now an interior decorator, Anne Dempsey, who is of course Mrs. Charles Seaman, and Joyce Eidson, who is engaged to a young minister, planning a reunion for the class of 1950. They are reading letters answering the announcement of the class reunion, and reminiscing about old times at C.H.S. You'd hardly recognize this place now as the same place it was ten years ago. When we were here it was a high school and grammar school combined and now it is strictly a hgh school with an enroll- ment of 2,000! I know it, Anne! but just look how the popula- tion has increased, all of Longview and the big housing project at Dunwoody. XVell, girls, we had better get to work and read some of these replies to the announcements. VVouldn't you know it? Sonny Anglin graduated from Tech with highest honors and is now one of the most famous architects in the South, he says to count him and his wife, the former Mary Lynn Bennett, whose services as a nurse are much sought after. This is from Phyllis Bagley, and here is one from Betty Lois Hfestbrooks, who are both married now and are planning to attend if they can End a baby sitter. Nancy Beatty and Josephine Latham report that they will be unable to attend because their basket- ball team is playing for the championship the day of the banquet. Mary, do you remember our three classmates who were married before school was out? They called last night and said they would be here. Oh, you mean Joyce Fuller, Rachel MeGee, and Peggy Brown. Calvin Hamil, as we always predicted, is the owner of the old Brookhaven Pharmacy only it is Hamil's Lharmacy now. I was in there the other day and he is planning to come. i'Oh! here's a letter from Buddy Towe, who always did like pretty girls, he is owner of a glamorous beach resort. He will come. Charles and I went out to Roland Harpers' Kennel the other day to take our dog for him to train and while I was there I told him about our planning a class reunion. He said that he would surely attend. Inez jenkins is married now and she and her husband just left for their summer vacation of three months so they will not be here. He is one of the most popular disc jockeys in Atlanta. He called the other night and said he could run out here for awhile but probably wou.dn't be able to stay all the time. I was not surprised when I heard that jeff Porter had become the distributing manager of a fountain pen company and has married the girl of his dreams. He says he will come. I was in 'Nona and Carolyn Dress Shop' on Peach- tree the other day and was talk.ng to Nona and Carolyn Shoemake. They are looking forward to the class reunion and, by the way, they have quite an exclusive shop! Let's see who this card is from. Oh! it's from Kathleen Shaw who is secretary of a large firm out in California. She has already made reservations in order to get here. Lana Long says he will not be able to attend. You know he is now a U. S. Senator and is quite a busy man. Here's a letter from Peggy Lord. She says she can hardly wait to get back to C. H. S. and see all l1er classmates. Betty Lunsford is serving her internship at john Hopkins Hospital. She will not be able to get here. I asked Herman Neimeyers' brother if he would be able to come and he said that Herman was in Europe, so that let's him out. Allen Loyd, Billy Poole and Grafton Pressley have formed a business of their own. They are plan- ning to attend. VVe certainly will have a good reunion if that many can attend. I can hardly wait to see all of them. Ten years must have made quite a change. lass H zstory The members of the Senior Class of Chamblee High School, 1950 are approaching the most important event of their lives, graduation day. There are 78 in our class who have long awaited this time. Even though we have been enrolled in schools, some near and some in various states, we have all completed practically the same classroom experience and have now come to the time of graduation. Though we have worked hard in our texts we have found time for the many activities offered here in our school. It is certainly hard to sum up in these few paragraphs the interesting years we have had in high school. All in all, climbing the lirst eight years of our education was a comparatively easy task. Yvhen we came to high school our progress was a bit more laborious. Our first term of high school life began September, 1946. The enrollment of our class was then 86. That was quite an event to be a freshman. Eager and full of vitality. Of course, we were completely ignored by the upper clasmen but we had our own little groups. Having the opportunity of choosing our own subjects and going from class to class was a change from the grammar school method. This way was the more mature way. As well as I remember, we had a few class get-togethers that were real fun. Our class teacher was Miss Fannie Boyd. Our sophomore year was next. Mle had a great increase of students in our class, from the Brookhaven neighborhood. VVe had settled down to high school by this time. We had watched the upper classmen and copied their way of conducting ourselves. Our class teacher was Miss Jessie Garrett. As our junior year came into view we were confronted with the choice between a college preparatory course and a commercial course. tl was a hard decision for some, but the time had come for us to think of our future. Wle had to take one of the two. Our junior year was a very wonderful year. Vfe were older and were settled down to work and were ready to prepare ourselves for Dignilied Seniors. Mle had a little more schol work, but that was to be expected. Our clas steacher was Miss Bowden. We prepared our junior-Senior Prom, which proved to be one of the bets ever given at Chamblee. After a most enjoyable summer we all came back, except those who had moved away, to enroll as seniors. And now this year is almost ended. Though the class has increased by leaps and bounds it has acquainted us with a step never to be forgotten, The High School Senior. Our annual is our biggest interest. Vie all want it to be the best ever. This step is just about over and many of our paths will never meet again, but our memories will bring the happy thoughts of the past, the halls and campus of dear old C.H.S. I hope the future will bring as much happiness as the past has proved to be. Our class is not only composed of students from Dunwoody, Doraville, Tucker, Brookhaven, Chamblee, and Atlanta schools, but also from all over the United States. Pupils in our class have come to Chamblee from New jersey, New York, Texas, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, XVashington, North Dakota, Maine and different parts of Georgia. Admired and respected by all members of our class are our class teachers for the last three years, Mrs. Oliver and Miss Christian, in the 8th, Miss Christian in the 9th, Miss Garrett in the 10th. Instead of giving the seniors a prom as the juniors usually do, we gave them a trip to Indian Springs, which was enjoyed by all who went. X'Ve are very proud of our girls' basketball team, which won the interelass tournament this year. Ten of our students entered the Fifth District Literary Events. Joe Resse, johnny O'Bryant, and Larry Bray took part in the quartet, which placed third. Helen jo Page assisted the quartet and also entered as piano contestant. Sue Ellen Xvells, Bert NVhidby and Ralph Oliver entered debate, won and went to Macon for state contest. Gloria Reynolds entered reading and won third place. Charles Manner and Jerry Davis were in the cast of the one-act plan. The play won and went to Macon for state contest. YVe are to be the first class to graduate through the twelve year system, as we were the class to initiate this plan. This year it fell our time, but we are glad of it. There were one hundred and twenty-one Freshmen enrolled during the year but some of them got lost on the way and now we have one hundred and Five. Wle are especially proud of some of our students. Glenda Briscoe won first place in the Spelling Contest for the county, and by a very slim margin lost in the District Contest, but came in second. Alice Porter took first place, and Don Wlest second place in the Library Essay Contest in the community. Several students were in the music recital directed by Mr. Wynn. It took much time and hard work. Over hfteen pupils have worked as part of the library staff, and because of their good work are entitled to a HCHAMBLEE LETTER. Recognition should be given to the many students who have participated in the class sports. One of our girls' basketball teams beat the sophomores and the seniors. The girls also organized a soft ball team and played several games. The boys' baseball teams won over the ninth, tenth and eleventh grades. XfVe have enjoyed this year very much, and have had lots of fun together. Several parties and hay-rides were given. NVe are looking forward to next year with great hopes. Each member of the teams greatly respects and admires their coach, who has taught them the importance of clean sportsmanship. Page Seventy-one ootbczl l Oh give a loud yell for OLD CHAMBLEE HIGH! This is exactly what each supporter did when the H250 edition of the Gridiron XVarriors from Chamblee took to the field ol' conquest. The team was a dandy machine and only once did it ever falter. The team was made up of boys who could do well on ollense and very rarely allowed the opposition to gain consistently, These boys could boek, run, pass and kick and were always a threat. This team was steered to six victories by quarterback David Pierce. He was also supported by Rembert Sykes, Eugene Xllilson, Cleveland Carlan, Harold Gravitt, Charles Little and also by such reserves as klefl Porter, Roland Harper, Ronald jameson, Bobby Lenning, A. XV. Edwards, Bussie Adams, Dieky Lay, Bobby brown, Bob XVilson, jaybird Hunter and Billy Gettys. They were always playing with the do or die spirit, and they showed good sportsmanship at all time. Football Cheerleaders Yes, they were always there, willing to lend a helping hand with all that they had to work with. Girls can hardly get out there on the hghting lield, as we may call it and play ball, but they did give all they have in supporting the boys who were playing. Girls' Basketball History As the curtain rose on the 1949-50 basketball season Chamblee had high hopes of a successful season. vVe practiced long and hard, looking forward to the first game. Finally we were ready and keyed up for the initial game. Our efforts were all in vain as we dropped our opening game. As the season unwound, our spirit increased with each game, but try as we did, we just could not get in the win column. Betty Jackson, who really got around the tall guards, was high scorer, followed by Elaine Hobson and Josephine Lathan, who really did a good job at their positions. Holding down the opposing teams were our three guards: Ann Dempsey, who was also our captain, kept her opponent well covered. Nancy Beatty, who was fast and tough, kept the ball going to the forwards. Helping her colleagues was Joyce Beazley, who kept her eye on the ball and usually got it when she went after it, even if it meant a fight to the end. Yale wish to give honorable mention to our reserve players who backed us up at all times, under all conditions. Forwards: Fay Farmer, Mary Ann Wlaters, Inez Jenkins, YVanda Jean Cargal, Jeanette Clark and Betty Jo Anderson. No, we didn't win all the games or even half of them, but with the help of our coach, Mr. Tony Palma, we won something even greater than just a game, we won the knowledge of knowing how to play clean and honest games. The team played hard and lost and kept their opponents on their toes at all times. The team played the best brand of ball, that is sure, because the fans enjoyed the games and got many thrills from them. The team was a well rounded group ol players, and played hard on defense as well as ollense. They were always exciting to watch and showed that they could win. They were sure to shine one time or another during the night and showed good speed and alertness. The boys who took part in the varsity games were Sykes, Pierce, Towe, Snoderly, Swancy, Reese, Lightsey, Edwards, Sheflield, Mosteller, and Gettys. The team ended the season in the third slot in the league and would have been higher if they could have won a few of the heartbreakers. Page Seventy-nine Baseball History This year something new was added, and to make sure that everybody knows what it is, 1 will tell you. This something new is night baseball. This is the first year that we have played at night. YVhether it was the nights or not, I do not know, but I know that the Chamblee High School team played inspired ball, and again took the championship trophy. Thees boys played well in the field and hit hard at the plate. The boys who took care of the pitching duties were Bonny Swancey and A. WV. Edwards. These boys turned in very good performances and were credited with only one defeat between them. They were backed by boys who turned in good defensive plays and really backed their mound staff. The boys who took part in the field were: Pierce, Reese, Fields, Shellield, Bray, Harper, XfVilson, Towe, Snoderly, Carland, Little, Gettys, Donaldson, Brown, Blanton, Dickens, Hunter, Xfvidly, and Manning.
