Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1972 volume:

1972 Cub Chamberlain High School Chamberlain, South Dakota 1972 is definitely a year to remember. With this inmind, I would like to take this opportunity to tell what a pleasure it’s been presenting this year- book. Surely enough, there was a great deal that happened in the halls of CHS. But in the ensuing pages, only a few of the many happenings are depicted. Remember.. . the time is now. In a few years the pictures portrayed in this yearbook will be nothing but the tense moments we have lived while attend- ing Chamberlain High School. Sometimes there are no words to describe your feelings as you page through this book. So, the best thing to do is to just start thumbing and thinking. Jelena Vasiljevic and Dragan Stankovic, our stu- dents from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, have been with us the entire school year. Julia Carlvalho, who is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was with us only the last nine weeks. Jelena can be seen walking to the post office two or three times a day as she receives many let- ters from home. She happens to be very musical and sports minded, and says that she wants to work on these two hobbies but can’t find all that she needs here in the United States. Dragan likes pop music and finds time to enjoy it in the Terry Casey household. Both of Dragan’s parents are pharmacists and he has one older brother and one older sister. He says that his school at home is much more lenient than CHS. Julia was the last of the three students to come to CHS. Back home she has four brothers and two sisters which she says she really misses. Julia is also staying with Mr. and Mrs. Terry Casey and their family. Julia transferred from Sioux Falls to Cham- berlain for the last nine weeks of school. CHS students have acquired much knowledge of foreign ways and customs from our three class- mates. We have enjoyed their presence this year and wish them good luck in their future years. Dragan and Jelena really had a good time at the prom with their dates. Dragan and Julia receive congratulations from their hostess, Mrs. Terry Casey. 36 Outstanding Seniors Receive Acknowledgement SALUTATORIAN and BETTY CROCKER AWARD Phyllis Pearl —. • m VALEDICTORIAN and VOCAL MUSIC AWARD Dennis Carlson 38 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Kathy Knutson, Dennis Carlson, Abe Chadderdon, James Lindlcy, Elaine Seeley, Deb Cahill, Carol Reis, Phyllis Pearl, Susan Lchcska. Crowning of the CHS royalty was the start of the homecoming activities. This year Paula Stur- geon and Phillip Rinehart were chosen to reign over CHS. Coronation activities concluded with the bonfire, snake dance and the pep rally down- town. Parade day turned out to be bright and sunny with a light wind. A record number of entries took part in the parade. That evening the Cubs fell to Highmore with an ending score of 26-25. The 1972 homecoming activities came to a close with a dance at the arm- ory. The ‘Fowl’ provided the music for an en- joyable evening. 61 Student body president, Monte Farnsworth, presents roses and scepters to the royalty. Juniors Take First in Parade Friday morning blasted off with last min- ute preparations; by noon, all the floats were finished. In the class division the juniors took first place for their elegant entry, the seniors placed second, the sophomores placed third and the freshmen were given honorable men- tion. DECA was awarded first place in the activities division. Spanish Club won second place and FHA received third place. Sophomores took first place with the only entry in the stunt float division. Junior Float: “Sink the Pirates”. 62 The royalty and senior attendants are chauffered by Dallas Thompson. 63 Cubs Play a Thrilling Game CHS royalty is given a musical salute. Mike Vchlc, 1968 grad, delivers an inspiring coronation speech. Cheerleaders add spirit to homecoming. 64 The traditional bonfire provides inspiration as well as a little warmth on a cool evening. This pass completion was a heart breaker for the Cubs. The fighting Cubs make a big gain on this play. 65 Pep Club Encourages Enthusiasm of CHS Students FIRST ROW: K. Knutson, B. Olesen, E. On various nights after school, if one just happened to be passing the old build- ing, you could hear a dull roar and see a room full of bright faces and cheery ex- pressions. This excited group was none other than our pep club preparing to cheer the Cubs on to victory. Throughout the year the club has kept busy by putting up signs in the halls of CHS to add to the excitement of an up- coming game, making arrangements for rides to out-of-town games on the bus, and selling mums during the homecoming festivities. A young club at Chamberlain High School is the Traffic Safety Club. This club maintained its interest this year by sponsoring varied activities. In the fall of the year the officers attended a state-wide meeting held in Pierre. At this meeting many useful ideas were picked up. Being such an active group the club decided to put on an assembly program. Pete Torino, the guest speaker, was very appealing to the students of CHS. Seeking to make people aware of the dangers on the highways the members made handouts for basketball games and wrestling matches. Another activity in- cluded washing windows. All in all, it was a very busy year for the members of this worthwhile club. Bill Ausdemore served as advisor of this club. 79 OFFICERS Jim Glaus, president; Karen Christensen, secretary; Rex Alcwel, president-elect, Dallas Thompson, project reporter; Dennis Carlson, vice president. The senior class of 1972 was honored at the banquet and prom on April 22 with the theme The Old South’. Leonard Andera, local attorney, was guest speaker at the banquet held in the United Church of Christ. Music was pro- vided by an instrumental ensemble and several vocal selections were sung by the junior girls’ ensemble. At the prom, couples entered the Old South over a flower bridge. A southern garden, cotton fields, and a wishing well added to the theme. Setting the Central Conference cham- pionship and defending the State A championship title as goals. Coach Dick DeNeufs cross country team set out to accomplish them. Under the leadership of ace runner, Monte Farnsworth, the team started out very slowly. Within a few weeks, though, Monte had garnered top medals and even set records at the Chamberlain In- vitational meet and also at the Huron Invitational. Monte ended a very fine season with a third place finish in the state meet. Having one good runner is every coaches dream, but having four more runners to back up Monte is some- thing else. Along with Monte, George Gilbert, Dick Ellis, Doug Winter, and Ron Weber enabled CHS to gain posses- sion of the state title for the second con- secutive year. Along with the varsity, the junior varsity also won their division at the Central Conference meet. With the younger talent coming up, CHS can be assured of a successful cross country season again next year. VARSITY George Gilbert, Monte Farnsworth, Dicky Ellis. Team Elects Chadderdon and Rinehart Co-Captains The 1971 football season started on a bright note with the Cubs winning the first game of the season against a tough Lyman team by a score of 22-6. However, the rest of the season was a long tough grind as the mighty Cubs could not seem to get things going their way. Eight senior lettermen leave the team but they have many talented under- classmen returning. The team elected Phillip Rinehart as the most valuable player. Abe Chadderdon and Phillip Rinehart were elected co-captains of the team. The team was coached by Bill Ausdemore; Millard Merkwan was his assistant. Let’s see ya try to catch me, you Pirate! There were five senior members who fought hard and laid the ground work for the younger members to follow. From the rundown of seniors, Abe Chadderdon led the team in total individual points with a grand total of 278. Phillip Rinehart demonstrated that tough rebounding ability with 211 total re- bounds. John Hanig seemed to follow Phillip’s technique of great rebounding with 130 total re- bounds. Jim Glaus made a total of 110 points and 88 rebounds. Last but not least, David Hieb threw in 79 points and made 79 rebounds. Abe Chadderdon was elected most valuable player by his teammates. Weather Dampens Track Season Poor weather conditions played a major part in the CHS track season this year. Many meets were either cancelled or postponed. This, how- ever, failed to dampen the spirits or pride of the athletes who participated. The team never scored enough points to win any meet but time records of previous years were continually broken. Several varsity and sopho- more records fell during the course of the season, but the high point of the season came when the tracksters journeyed to the regional meet at Mitchell. There, three members of the team quali- fied for the state meet; Lance Weber in the 440- yard dash, Abie Chaddcrdon in the 880-yard run, and Monte Farnsworth in the two-mile run. The seniors of the team played a major role in the relays and individual efforts of the team. These members as well as the rest of the team did their best to support CHS wherever they went. This match proved very successful and plans for a rematch may be set up next year. Because of the wear and tear put on the varsity suit jackets, C-Club donated some money to help defray costs for new ones. They also put in some money for a new weight machine with six stations. Monte Farnsworth led the CHS stud- ent council in another year of activities as the CHS student body president. Along with the annual projects of the council such as homecoming, concessions. Na- tional Honor Society banquet, and the Christmas program, the members also had several other functions. The faculty met the mighty student council in a basketball game. Though the students led by cheerleaders Deb Trusty, Pam Miller, Phyllis Pearl, and Linda Jorgensen, cheered hard for the council, the faculty managed to slip by them with a score of 36 to 30. The student council also discussed the school constitution, held assemblies, and ended their year with the election of a new president and cheerleaders for the coming year. Monte Farnsworth, president; Abe Chaddcrdon, vice president; Susan Lchcska, secretary- treasurer. 130 CHS Service Staff Betters School Environment CUSTODIANS BUS DRIVERS George EUingsen, Don Adamson, Cliff Shroyer, Mike Ommen.
