Both speed and accuracy are important in typing. Business Department Adds New Courses New courses added to the CHS curriculum this year were business law and business mathematics. Juniors and seniors enrolled in these courses learned the proper way to make and calculate business trans- actions. Bookkeeping courses gave the students the knowledge of how to record these transactions. Typing, a prerequisite for office practice, was again offered at the sophomore level. The senior girls enrolled in the office practice course were given instruction for various office machines as well as general office procedure. Teachers in the business department were Duane Stevenson and Kent Johnson. 27 Corlis Erdman reads a manuscript prepared in office practice.

Melvin Petrak demonstrates one of the many techni- ques he learned while working at Harry’s Welding. Alice Zaugg concentrates on her clerical job at Tri-County Bank. On-the-Job Training Gives Experience Industrial relations was offered to seniors who wished to participate in on-the-job training before graduation. Regualr classes were attended in the morning including formal instruction in industrial relations. Here they were taught distribution and mar- keting as well as social and economic responsibilities of employees. Students enrolled in the course and their jobs are: Jason Clark, cook trainee, APs Oasis; Fayrene Davenport, waitress and clerk, APs Oasis; Cathy Gilman, waitress and clerk, APs Oasis: Steven Dominiack, sales clerk, APs Oasis; Curtis Hieb, mechanic, A R Trucking and Equipment: Connie Moore, clerk, Lee’s Store: Melvin Petrak, machinist, Harry’s Welding; Dan Wieczorek, mechanic, Willrodt Motor; Carol Wipf, kitchen aid. Community Bailey Hospital; Alice Zaugg, clerk, Tri-County State Bank. Lawrence Cozine supervises this program. 26 Connie Moore earns credits as well as money and experience at Lee’s.

Joyce Forell works on her Home Ec III sewing project. Patsy Hosek selects a pattern for her home project. Students Enjoy Vocational Courses A new learning experience, individualized instruc- tion, was initiated in home economics. Each student selected the concepts she wished to pursue, with guid- ance from the instructor, and then completed a capsule (written objectives, questions and activities) by securing the answers from many resources. Film strips, tapes, references, pre-tests, and post-tests were made available. Basic capsules were required so each student obtained a background before pro- ceeding. A discussion between student and instructor showed the strength and weakness for evaluation. Three years of home economics, under the guidance of Mrs. Merry Emme, were available for the students. Agriculture I, II, and III were courses offered to boys who live on farms and ranches. These courses included the study of modern techniques in farming and livestock raising. Leonard DeBoer was the in- structor. 28 Steve Leheska practices his speech before the ag class.
