Karla Chavez works on her project for art class. Art Is Added to CHS Curriculum A new course at CHS, art, under the direction of Mrs. Janet Stevenson, provided the artistically talented student to show his skill. Travel posters, color schemes, charcoal portraits, commercial lettering, and clay pottery were some of the many projects covered during the school year. Art develops culture, patience, and perspective in the individual student. 24 Pottery in its different states is shown here.

Mrs. Nankivel and her Latin class work diligently at translating a Latin story. Students Become Bilingual “Vamos a hablar espanol” is the theme of the Spanish classes. Following the theory of ‘learn by doing’, as much spoken Spanish as possible is practiced in the first and second year level classes. In addition to the practice drills, original conver- sations and short dialogs are used. For diversion and reading practice, Spanish short stories have proven interesting. Both Spanish I and II were taught by Mrs. Charlotte Cadwell. Latin, taught by Mrs. Reeva Nankivel, is a base for other languages such as Spanish. Thus Latin has been offered only as a one year course to prepare students for other language courses. Members of both the Latin and Spanish classes are further aided in study by enjoyment from the Latin and Spanish clubs. Demonstrating the new language lab are Barb Garris and Mary Casey.

Craig Swanson, Curt Hieb, and Gary Rose browse through the library during their study hall. Library and Counseling Benefit Students The school library served, first of all, as a service agency, its function being to further the school objec- tives. It supplied information on many subjects of interest to pupils and teachers. The library became increasingly effective as teachers and students learned to use its resources and employ its services for their work and pleasure purposes. Our librarian, Mrs. Hazel Strand, made the library a reading room, a materials laboratory, and a work center for the entire school. Mr. Lodge’s office served as a place to discuss problems concerning class schedules, college entrance, and vocational plans. He also helped many students with their personal problems. Testing in both the elementary and high school was under his supervision. We are grateful for his nine years of service in our school. 25 Mr. Lodge, guidance counselor, talks to the juniors about senior requirements for registration.
