These students are busy completing an assignment in drafting class. Students Train For Future Occupations Under the supervision of Dennis Shepherd, the Industrial Arts classes trained students for future occupations and hobbies. These classes included Shop I and II, and drafting. Students were taught the fundamentals of wood-working, plastics, and drafting techniques. Social Sciences Include the Past and the Present The social sciences played a very important part of the 1969-70 curriculum at CHS. Classes in this field were offered both as required and as elective courses. Students at CHS learned of our world’s past as sophomores in world history, a required course taught by Mrs. Grace Winter. American History, a required junior subject, helped students to gain a better understanding of why our country is the way it is today. Donald Giese taught this course and also a course in world geography. The people of the world, the United States, and their various forms of government were studied quite exten- sively in sociology, government, economics, and Problems of Democracy. These courses were taught by Darrel Cadwell. The seniors are required to take two semesters of social studies, one must be government. Lynette Thompson points out the business district of a model city to Mary Keiner in sociology class. 20

Mrs. Reeva Nankivel, senior English teacher, explains the new lesson to Bonnie Chadderdon. English Classes Combine Language, Logic, and Literature “Let’s listen to this new song, Miss Marsh.’’ The English language, both grammar and literature, was the subject of much study at CHS during the 1969- 70 school year. The freshmen, with Mrs. Charlotte Cadwell, Mrs. Mary Keller, Mrs. Grace Winter, and Jill Marsh as teachers, were taught a general course in grammar as well as a sampling of a variety of literature including A Tale of Two Cities and Romeo and Juliet as major literary works. The sophomores, with Mrs. Mary Keller as teacher, augmented their knowledge of English with a course in speech as well as a more advanced course in literature which in- cluded Silas Marner and Julius Caesar. Under the direction of Jill Marsh, the juniors at CHS continued their English education with a study of American literature and a course in grammar. The Grapes of Wrath and Red Badge of Courage were among the novels studied. The seniors terminated their study of high school English with a course in English literature, grammar, and composition. Hamlet was one of the major literary works read in the senior English class, which was taught by Mrs. Reeva Nankivel. 22
