Social Sciences Include the Past and the Present The social sciences played a very important part of the 1969-70 curriculum at CHS. Classes in this field were offered both as required and as elective courses. Students at CHS learned of our world’s past as sophomores in world history, a required course taught by Mrs. Grace Winter. American History, a required junior subject, helped students to gain a better understanding of why our country is the way it is today. Donald Giese taught this course and also a course in world geography. The people of the world, the United States, and their various forms of government were studied quite exten- sively in sociology, government, economics, and Problems of Democracy. These courses were taught by Darrel Cadwell. The seniors are required to take two semesters of social studies, one must be government. Lynette Thompson points out the business district of a model city to Mary Keiner in sociology class. 20

Explaining one of the many difficult questions asked by trigonometry students is Gary Meeder, geometry and advanced math teacher. Logical Reasoning is Important in Math Preparing students for college and giving them an opportunity to reason is provided by such courses as Algebra I and II and trigonometry. Patience and concentration are required in geometry which in- volves angles, planes, and dimensional figures. Advanced mathematics is a combination of both algebra and geometry and allows students to review and further their skills in this field. A new series of texts were used in Algebra I and geometry this year. The series will be continued as the students reach the Algebra II and advanced mathematics courses. General Mathematics or Algebra I is a required freshman subject. Gary Meeder taught the general mathematics, geometry, and advanced mathematics courses and Mrs. Lois Kaltsulas the Algebra I and II courses. Algebra II students, Bonita Raish and Kathy Garris, practice working logarithm problems. 19

These students are busy completing an assignment in drafting class. Students Train For Future Occupations Under the supervision of Dennis Shepherd, the Industrial Arts classes trained students for future occupations and hobbies. These classes included Shop I and II, and drafting. Students were taught the fundamentals of wood-working, plastics, and drafting techniques. Their many projects were displayed Class Night. 21 Gordon Collins uses ‘manpower’ to sand his shop project.
