1970 Cub Chamberlain High School Chamberlain, South Dakota Dedication The 1970 Cub is dedicated to the memory of Sam J. Jorgensen, a 1967 graduate of Chamberlain High School, who died in the service of his country in South Vietnam. His friendliness, spirit, and courage set an example for all. We shall long remember and admire him. Sam has been awarded post- humously the Bronze Star Medal, the Bronze Star Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) and the Purple Heart. Prior to his death, Sam had been awarded the Army Com- mendation Medal, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Sharp- shooter Badge with rifle and pistol bars. The Staff invites you to review the 1969-70 school year in words and pictures. We have included those great moments as well as some you have probably already forgotten. School District Increases in Size The school board this year was busy with district reorganization. The Chamberlain Independent School District now contains approximately 1600 square miles. It has under its jurisdiction ten elementary rural teaching centers, the elementary teaching centers of Oacoma and Pukwana, and the center in Chamberlain which also in- cludes the high school. Because of the reorganization, two more members have been added to the board. The board provided an in-service teaching program for all the teachers of the district. It also added art to the CHS curriculum. 10 President Harold Dufelmeier congratulates Lynn Kolund as he presents him his diploma. Vernon V. The 1969-70 CHS student council began their yearly activities under the leadership of Jim Pickner. Along with the City Commissioners, the student council sponsored a clean-up day. The town was divided into four sections, one for each class. Classes were dismissed in the afternoon for this project. Other projects carried out by the council were homecoming, the Christmas party, concessions at the district tournaments, a casual day, and the National Honor Society banquet. Due to conflicting dates, the Sadie Hawkins day was cancelled this year. The election of the student body president and the cheerleaders for the coming year brought the student council activities to an end. Lab Experiments Establish Facts A dissected worm, a broken test tube and a ripple tank are common sights in the science classes. Making up the science department are four courses: general science, biology, chemistry, and physics. General science is a required freshman course. Working with unknown chemicals, dissecting cray- fish, clams, frogs and fish, and other experiments make the science courses interesting and enjoyable. Gary Kathan and Millard Merkwan are the teachers in this department. Through the use of the ripple tank physics students prove the theory of wave motion. 18 Explaining one of the many difficult questions asked by trigonometry students is Gary Meeder, geometry and advanced math teacher. Logical Reasoning is Important in Math Preparing students for college and giving them an opportunity to reason is provided by such courses as Algebra I and II and trigonometry. Patience and concentration are required in geometry which in- volves angles, planes, and dimensional figures. Advanced mathematics is a combination of both algebra and geometry and allows students to review and further their skills in this field. A new series of texts were used in Algebra I and geometry this year. The series will be continued as the students reach the Algebra II and advanced mathematics courses. General Mathematics or Algebra I is a required freshman subject. Gary Meeder taught the general mathematics, geometry, and advanced mathematics courses and Mrs. Lois Kaltsulas the Algebra I and II courses. Algebra II students, Bonita Raish and Kathy Garris, practice working logarithm problems. 19 Practice teacher Jan Dykshorn learns the techniques of A filmstrip is viewed by the students in government class, teaching government from Darrel Cadwell. Social Sciences Include the Past and the Present The social sciences played a very important part of the 1969-70 curriculum at CHS. Classes in this field were offered both as required and as elective courses. Students at CHS learned of our world’s past as sophomores in world history, a required course taught by Mrs. Grace Winter. American History, a required junior subject, helped students to gain a better understanding of why our country is the way it is today. Donald Giese taught this course and also a course in world geography. The people of the world, the United States, and their various forms of government were studied quite exten- sively in sociology, government, economics, and Problems of Democracy. These courses were taught by Darrel Cadwell. The seniors are required to take two semesters of social studies, one must be government. Lynette Thompson points out the business district of a model city to Mary Keiner in sociology class. 20 These students are busy completing an assignment in drafting class. Students Train For Future Occupations Under the supervision of Dennis Shepherd, the Industrial Arts classes trained students for future occupations and hobbies. These classes included Shop I and II, and drafting. Students were taught the fundamentals of wood-working, plastics, and drafting techniques. Their many projects were displayed Class Night. 21 Gordon Collins uses ‘manpower’ to sand his shop project. Mrs. Reeva Nankivel, senior English teacher, explains the new lesson to Bonnie Chadderdon. English Classes Combine Language, Logic, and Literature “Let’s listen to this new song, Miss Marsh.’’ The English language, both grammar and literature, was the subject of much study at CHS during the 1969- 70 school year. The freshmen, with Mrs. Charlotte Cadwell, Mrs. Mary Keller, Mrs. Grace Winter, and Jill Marsh as teachers, were taught a general course in grammar as well as a sampling of a variety of literature including A Tale of Two Cities and Romeo and Juliet as major literary works. The sophomores, with Mrs. Mary Keller as teacher, augmented their knowledge of English with a course in speech as well as a more advanced course in literature which in- cluded Silas Marner and Julius Caesar. Under the direction of Jill Marsh, the juniors at CHS continued their English education with a study of American literature and a course in grammar. The Grapes of Wrath and Red Badge of Courage were among the novels studied. The seniors terminated their study of high school English with a course in English literature, grammar, and composition. Hamlet was one of the major literary works read in the senior English class, which was taught by Mrs. Reeva Nankivel. 22 Mrs. Nankivel and her Latin class work diligently at translating a Latin story. Students Become Bilingual “Vamos a hablar espanol” is the theme of the Spanish classes. Following the theory of ‘learn by doing’, as much spoken Spanish as possible is practiced in the first and second year level classes. In addition to the practice drills, original conver- sations and short dialogs are used. For diversion and reading practice, Spanish short stories have proven interesting. Both Spanish I and II were taught by Mrs. Charlotte Cadwell. Latin, taught by Mrs. Reeva Nankivel, is a base for other languages such as Spanish. Thus Latin has been offered only as a one year course to prepare students for other language courses. Members of both the Latin and Spanish classes are further aided in study by enjoyment from the Latin and Spanish clubs. Demonstrating the new language lab are Barb Garris and Mary Casey. Karla Chavez works on her project for art class. Art Is Added to CHS Curriculum A new course at CHS, art, under the direction of Mrs. Janet Stevenson, provided the artistically talented student to show his skill. Travel posters, color schemes, charcoal portraits, commercial lettering, and clay pottery were some of the many projects covered during the school year. Art develops culture, patience, and perspective in the individual student. 24 Pottery in its different states is shown here. Craig Swanson, Curt Hieb, and Gary Rose browse through the library during their study hall. Library and Counseling Benefit Students The school library served, first of all, as a service agency, its function being to further the school objec- tives. It supplied information on many subjects of interest to pupils and teachers. The library became increasingly effective as teachers and students learned to use its resources and employ its services for their work and pleasure purposes. Our librarian, Mrs. Hazel Strand, made the library a reading room, a materials laboratory, and a work center for the entire school. Mr. Lodge’s office served as a place to discuss problems concerning class schedules, college entrance, and vocational plans. He also helped many students with their personal problems. Testing in both the elementary and high school was under his supervision. We are grateful for his nine years of service in our school. 25 Mr. Lodge, guidance counselor, talks to the juniors about senior requirements for registration. Melvin Petrak demonstrates one of the many techni- ques he learned while working at Harry’s Welding. Alice Zaugg concentrates on her clerical job at Tri-County Bank. On-the-Job Training Gives Experience Industrial relations was offered to seniors who wished to participate in on-the-job training before graduation. Regualr classes were attended in the morning including formal instruction in industrial relations. Here they were taught distribution and mar- keting as well as social and economic responsibilities of employees. Students enrolled in the course and their jobs are: Jason Clark, cook trainee, APs Oasis; Fayrene Davenport, waitress and clerk, APs Oasis; Cathy Gilman, waitress and clerk, APs Oasis: Steven Dominiack, sales clerk, APs Oasis; Curtis Hieb, mechanic, A R Trucking and Equipment: Connie Moore, clerk, Lee’s Store: Melvin Petrak, machinist, Harry’s Welding; Dan Wieczorek, mechanic, Willrodt Motor; Carol Wipf, kitchen aid. Community Bailey Hospital; Alice Zaugg, clerk, Tri-County State Bank. Lawrence Cozine supervises this program. 26 Connie Moore earns credits as well as money and experience at Lee’s. Both speed and accuracy are important in typing. Business Department Adds New Courses New courses added to the CHS curriculum this year were business law and business mathematics. Juniors and seniors enrolled in these courses learned the proper way to make and calculate business trans- actions. Bookkeeping courses gave the students the knowledge of how to record these transactions. Typing, a prerequisite for office practice, was again offered at the sophomore level. The senior girls enrolled in the office practice course were given instruction for various office machines as well as general office procedure. Teachers in the business department were Duane Stevenson and Kent Johnson. 27 Corlis Erdman reads a manuscript prepared in office practice. Joyce Forell works on her Home Ec III sewing project. Patsy Hosek selects a pattern for her home project. Students Enjoy Vocational Courses A new learning experience, individualized instruc- tion, was initiated in home economics. Each student selected the concepts she wished to pursue, with guid- ance from the instructor, and then completed a capsule (written objectives, questions and activities) by securing the answers from many resources. Film strips, tapes, references, pre-tests, and post-tests were made available. Basic capsules were required so each student obtained a background before pro- ceeding. A discussion between student and instructor showed the strength and weakness for evaluation. Three years of home economics, under the guidance of Mrs. Merry Emme, were available for the students. Agriculture I, II, and III were courses offered to boys who live on farms and ranches. These courses included the study of modern techniques in farming and livestock raising. Leonard DeBoer was the in- structor. 28 Steve Leheska practices his speech before the ag class. Softball is one of the many activities of the physical education program. Physical Education Stresses Sportsmanship Physical education is a course required for all students fifth through tenth grades, including an optional advanced course for junior and seniors. The activities are varied and include such games as volleyball, baseball, basketball, bowling, and softball, as well as trampoline and tumbling instruction. The physical education classes, under the direction of Janet Schmidt and David Kelley, strive to instill in the students the importance of good sportsmanship and physical well being. 29 Dave Bartlett performs on the trampoline. The bonfire, the burning of the CHS letters, the snake dance, and the pep rally downtown all helped to boost the CHS spirit. Parade day was ushered in by perfect weather. One of the longest parades in our history moved through the streets. That evening the hard-working Cubs lost the game to Faulkton by a score of 22 to 18. Ending the home- coming festivities was the dance in the Armory with music provided by the ‘Wonders of Confusion’. The main purpose of DECA is to develop leaders in the fields of marketing and dis- tribution. Through DECA the students are given the opportunity to compete in the in- dividual specialty: salesmanship, display, job application, and interview or public speaking. This year attending the state leadership conference were Melvin Petrak, Dan Corr, Jason Clark, Fayrene Davenport, Cathy Gilman, and Steven Dominiack. Monthly meetings were held including two breakfast meetings. Funds were raised by having the concession at the armory for some of the basketball games. 83 SEATED: J. Chavez, T. Gust, D. Vehle, S. The CHS interscholastic debate program, directed by Mrs. Mary Keller, included a pre-season workshop in Sioux Falls. Three conference meets and four invitational tourna- ments were attended by the debaters. Lacking experienced speakers, CHS entered first and second year debaters at the varsity and novice level. Dan Vehle reached the finals in conference original oratory competition and placed third in that contest. Also participating in the original oratory were Mary Hintze, Rita Bartekoske, and Jerry Chavez. Extempting for CHS were Scott Winjum, Tim Woster, Carla Balster, Andy Nissen, Jane Helland, and Holly Alewel. Begin- ning extempers included Kay Jensen, Jim Gerth, and Rita Bartekoske. They also participated in debate. Debating but not entering individual events were Tim Gust and Wade Hamiel. Varsity speakers participated in the division tournament at Huron on March 9-10. On Homecoming, Faulkton nosed out the mighty Cubs and after that it seemed they just couldn’t get up any steam.
