The long- lived dream of the United Church Youth to sponsor an exchange student had finally become a reality. He arrived at Chamberlain in July to live with his new host family, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Lanz. Hans adjusted rapidly to his new environment and was soon behaving like a normal American teenager. He was elected president of the A Band, in which he played first chair flute. He lettered in football and graduated with honors. As Hans learned of the American way of life, he also told the Americans of what life is like in Switzerland. Men and countries shall always strive for closer understanding. Hans has brought the CHS youth closer to Switzerland, and they hope that Hans, with his newly acquired knowledge, will bring his Swiss friends closer to the United States. All were in place and Mas- ter of Ceremonies, Mark Brainard, announced Queen Mary Binder and Marshal Joe Burull to an awed audience. CHS Homecoming activities for 1964 were in full swing. After the coronation ceremonies, the stu- dents attended the traditional bonfire and snake dance which led to a pep rally in front of the City Hall. The crowd dispersed and students hurried off to make last minute adjustments on class floats. October 2, the big day, arrived. Queen Mary, Marshal Joe, and the CHS band led the homecoming parade down main street. It was later disclosed that the senior float, Cubs, Bear Down , had taken first prize, while the sophomores' We'll Gorill 'Em , placed sec- ond, and the Juniors', Wishin' For Victory , carried third place. That night the crowd congregated at the football field to watch the Cubs put up a bril- liant fight against the Gregory Gorillas. The final score was 34-12, with the Gorillas over the Cubs. To add the final touches to the festivities, a dance was held in the armory which was open to all students of CHS and alumni. The Four Flushers provided the main entertainment. Thus the memorable 1964 Homecoming came to an end. S. Strand, M. Verschoor, J. Manger, C. Hubbard, L. Sllbernagel, P. Wlllrodt, Queen Mary, Marshal Joe, C. Hutmacher S. Drew, L. Kenobbie, K. However, the team became plagued with injuries and, even though the Cubs put up a grueling fight, they could not continue the excellent record they had in the beginning of the season. Consequently, the season ended with a record of 2 wins and 7 losses. At the annual Homecoming the Cubs fought valiantly against the Gregory Gorillas. The Cubs met defeat in a 34-12 decision. M Fo .Meek er directs vocal music for fmal year During the past year the vocal music department of CHS, under the direction of Nyle Meeker, provided many hours of entertainment both to those participating and to those listen- ing. The vocal department lived up to it's reputation at the Region V annual contest at Kimball Feb. 4. Boys' Octet earned a superior, they have received a superior since 1952. Girls Sextet and four soloists received superiors. Highlighting the year was the Christmas vocal music concert presented Dec. 22, and the combination band and vocal Spring Festival presented May 4 under the direction of Mr. John Rezatto of South Dakota State University. The closing of this year marked the end of Nyle Meeker's years at CHS. The students give their deepest appreciation to him for all his time and efforts, and wish him the best of everything in the future. Officers E. Galbraith, Robe manager; E. Sharpe, Treasurer; S. Band and vocal music departments teamed together to present the fifth annual Music Festival May 4, 1965. Vocal groups were directed by Mr. John Rezatto, who is presently the director at South Dakota State University. Since Mr. Warren Hatfield, also from State, was unable to arrive that day, Chamberlain's Director, Mr. DeLyle Dvorak, directed the band. The day was begun by a rehearsal of the band with Mr. Dvorak for two hours. Mr. Rezatto then worked an hour each with boy's chorus, girls' chorus, mixed chorus, and Freshmen girls' chorus. Afterwards, the combined vocal and band group rehearsed. The final notes made every- one sung-out and blown-out. That evening the armory was filled with lovely girls in formals, handsome boys in suits, and a large anticipating audience. Themes from Unsinkable Molly Brown and also various concert marches were performed by the band. Mixed chorus presented a Handel number, Then Round About the Starry Throne. A combined band and chorus number Born To Be Free completed the concert. FIRST ROW: L. Olson, J. Gibson, P. Novak, B. Beckwith, P. Klein, P. Vance, D. Beemer, C. Price, R. Anderson, L. Fees, S. On December 10 a winter concert was held, and on May 4 a Spring Festival was pre- sented. Both were under the direction of Mr. Dvorak. October 17, the group once again made the journey to Vermillion, South Dakota, to the University of South Dakota's Homecoming Day. The Region VI Band Contest was held on February 10 at Lake Andes. Solists and en- sembles captured eight superiors, ten excellents, and six goods. The Pep Band added much spirit to the home football and basketball games with their lively tunes. To climax a year of vigorous work under Mr. Dvorak, the Chamberlain High School Band performed at Memorial Day Services held in Chamberlain on May 30. Taylor, M. Klein, B. Biskeborn, H. Richner.
