Comets Fall 14-3 Spirit, what's that you say? Well, if you were at the 1987 Chagrin Falls High School Homecoming weekend you saw plenty of it! This year's tradi- tional parade up East Washington St., pep rally at Harris Stadium, and bonfire in the senior parking lot was by far the most spirited event Chagrin has seen in years. The parade was led by the marching band, followed by the cheerleaders, all varsity fall sports teams, and the Homecoming attendants. Upon reaching the stadium, everyone piled into the stands to participate in some rousing cheers led by the cheerleaders and to hear a little bit about the sports teams from each of the coaches. Then it was off to the bonfire to see the Solon dummy go up in flames. These spirited festivities marked the start of a sensational Homecoming weekend! The next chapter of the weekend was played out by the Chagrin Varsity soccer team. The Ti- gers played a great game against Westerville South High School. The team worked together well, but were defeated 5-1. The parade, the bonfire, the soccer game, and the dance. These are four reasons that students might forget the original event of homecoming that began nearly a century ago at the University of Illinois - the football game. This year, the Tigers opponent was Solon. Not a particularly wise choice, at first glance, for in recent years the Com- ets have dominated Chagrin in football. This edi- tion of the fall classic in Chagrin found the Tigers defeating the Comets before a hearty crowd of students and alumni on their way to a CVC cham- pionship, 14-3. The home team played a sluggish first half, and trailed at intermission by the score of 3-0. The Tigers took the second-half kickoff and drove 80 yards for the touchdown. When they scored with a 2-yard Jim Cohn run, they never looked back. This score remained until Chagrin scored again in the fourth quarter. Judd Wood- ward blocked a Solon punt and recovered the ball at the Comet 2-yard line. Scotty Thomas drove into the end zone on the ensuing play to ensure the Tigers victory. Coach John Piai, commenting on the teams play said, Our kids kept their cool. They really listened to what we, the coaches, had to say.” He reflected the feelings of the school and community in saying, I'm really proud of them. ii
