Well, if you were at the 1987 Chagrin Falls High School Homecoming weekend you saw plenty of it! This year's tradi- tional parade up East Washington St., pep rally at Harris Stadium, and bonfire in the senior parking lot was by far the most spirited event Chagrin has seen in years. The parade was led by the marching band, followed by the cheerleaders, all varsity fall sports teams, and the Homecoming attendants. Upon reaching the stadium, everyone piled into the stands to participate in some rousing cheers led by the cheerleaders and to hear a little bit about the sports teams from each of the coaches. Then it was off to the bonfire to see the Solon dummy go up in flames. These spirited festivities marked the start of a sensational Homecoming weekend! The next chapter of the weekend was played out by the Chagrin Varsity soccer team. The Ti- gers played a great game against Westerville South High School. The team worked together well, but were defeated 5-1. The parade, the bonfire, the soccer game, and the dance. These are four reasons that students might forget the original event of homecoming that began nearly a century ago at the University of Illinois - the football game. This year, the Tigers opponent was Solon. Not a particularly wise choice, at first glance, for in recent years the Com- ets have dominated Chagrin in football. This edi- tion of the fall classic in Chagrin found the Tigers defeating the Comets before a hearty crowd of students and alumni on their way to a CVC cham- pionship, 14-3. The home team played a sluggish first half, and trailed at intermission by the score of 3-0. The Tigers took the second-half kickoff and drove 80 yards for the touchdown. When they scored with a 2-yard Jim Cohn run, they never looked back. This score remained until Chagrin scored again in the fourth quarter. Judd Wood- ward blocked a Solon punt and recovered the ball at the Comet 2-yard line. Scotty Thomas drove into the end zone on the ensuing play to ensure the Tigers victory. Coach John Piai, commenting on the teams play said, Our kids kept their cool. They really listened to what we, the coaches, had to say.” He reflected the feelings of the school and community in saying, I'm really proud of them. ii Bottom (left to right): The anxious Homecoming attendants and their escorts, Halle Phillpott and Jeff Hilty, Carlene Cox and Jeff Materni, Kristin Clark and Paul Doman, Jennifer Mit- chel and Colin Shea, Cara Marshall and Roger Portaro, and Molly McMonagle and Jason Heartz await the final decison. Below: Kate Wiese, Donna Gross, Halle Philpott, Jean Anderson, Bon- nie Finley, Tanya Weiker and Jenny Karpiel show their spirit as they cheer on the Tigers. Below Middle: Tanya Weiker congra- tulates the new Homecoming Queen, Halle Philpott, with a big hug. Below Right: The Tiger fans make a human tunnel for Senior Judd Wood- ward and the rest of the team to cheer on a victory. Far Right: Help!, get me out of here, says Laurel Worley as she works in the concession stand. ■ 12 And the Magic Continued 13 The Homecoming Dance went like Clockwork thanks to the band. Kathleen Puette, Rosalind Wood, Laura Wurster, and Megan Ferguson prove that the walls do have ears. Kelly Whitelaw and Billy Tropf, aren't you out past your bedtime? Judy Fortner, Suzane Werber, Michaela Maras, Laverne Davis and Kelly Hissett take off on the Magic Carpet as the dance begins. As the dance is going full force Adam Lechman, Kristen Clark, Eric Burnett, Tom Luff, and Todd Feucht take a min- ute to show everybody what a great time they are having. 14 We Danced the Night Away Where were we on Saturday, October 11 at 8:00 p.m.? Well some of us were dining at T.G.l. Fri- days enjoying deep-fried shrimp. Others dined in and enjoyed a catered meal. Beef Wellington, how scrumptious!” Some of us took that exciting step on the Magic Carpet exactly at 8:00 p.m. with the dinner loggers coming in at 9:30 p.m. The Commons was decked out in balloons and stream- ers which added to the excitement of the moment. There were brilliant blues representing the sky and purples and pinks as the magic carpet. The students and a few teachers boogied to the sixties music of Clockwork. They played great songs ranging from new wave to classic rock. Ima- gine a long line of students winding over the dance floor, hoping to the tunes that make a dance sucessful. Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Lewis joined in the fun. The majority enjoyed the dance with the best songs being ”Twist and Shout” and Shout”. 4s one Sophmore stated, “If you wanted a good work-out, you should have been there”. Freshman Wendy Bennett had only one regret, They didn't play enough slow songs! How are you supposed to dance with anyone?” There was not one open space left on the dance floor. 4s one senior sta- ted, The floor was so packed, every time I turned around, I was dancing with a new person. The magic carpet finally landed at around 12:00p.m. and those who took the ride left with the memory of a fantastic ride. Juniors Blast Women The Junior and Senior football game took place on the afternoon of Sunday, October 18th. To say that tension existed between the Junior girls and the Senior women is an un- derstatement. It was a victory for the Juniors with a score of 14-0. The Junior team cap- tains were Vanessa Bello and Stephanie Wright and the Senior captain was Stacy Eh- renbeit. There was no score by the end of the first half, but hang on, because during the second half the field came alive. The pressure grew, as did the rivalry. Not to be left far behind, so did the number of bumps and bruises. During the second half two touch- downs were scored by the Juniors! Each of the team captains, Vanessa Bello and Stephanie Wright, scored one of the touchdowns. Two extra points were scored by Junior Susan Wright. The game was cut short with three minutes to go because of unsportsmanlike be- havior by both teams and fans. According to one Junior team member, Despite the bumps and bruises, we still came out on top.” Over- all, it was a great day for the Juniors with only minor injuries and high hopes for next year. 16 Opposite Left: Seniors Chris Young, Jeff Materni, Ken Mattern, Lee Ladyga, Roger Bly, Thad Barry, and Jim Prideaux sit back and take it all in. Opposite Middle: Jeanie Hummer sympathizes with Lindsay Hybil's aches and pains. Far Left: If looks could kill Vanessa Bakr's opponents would be dead! Top: Jeff Mettee, Brian Desberg, Kris Koprowski, Dan Mills, John Bartter, Walley McGregor, John Tutolo, and Nico Cottone plan their next rousing cheer for the class of '88. Above Left: Junior cheer- leaders Bob Rutkowski, Chuck Cary, Rob Schurr, Shane Wrench, Tim Wen- nerstrom, Tate Pierce, Scott Simpson, Chris Rein- hard, Bob Cox and Joel Fullum make a human monument to support their Junior girls. Above: Amy Johnson, Mi- chelle Polomsky and Jill Hendrix don't find this game a bit amusing. Left: Erica Sommer, Kelly Hissett, Rene Church and Paige O'Neil cheer on their wimming team. 17 18 Leonard May Teacher of the Year 19 Above Left: Another exciting day in the senior Bio. class. Above Center: Yes, we are all proud of you, Scott Morris! Above Right: Kyle Conrad working on an- other masterpiece. Above: Senior women are ready for the Powderpuff game. Far Right: Jennifer Banks working hard as usual. The ex- citement began in the fall with an- other successful homecoming weekend. Among numerous other activities, Halle Philpott was crowned queen as our football team trampled over Chardon. As the snow began to fall, our spirit turned toward the successful basketball team - along with des- peration for a snow day. As the first semester ended, and mid- terms came and went, we were all surprised at how quickly the first half of our year had gone by. It seemed like just yesterday when we were astonished that we only had our senior year remaining. Before we knew it, spring rolled around. With the snow melting, everybody came to the realization that our senior year consisted now of only three months. With gradu- ation coming soon, we felt re- morse; we had come to the end. But graduation is an event to be cele- brated! So we celebrated some- thing for which our class is well known. Chagrin Falls High School has given us a wonderful four years. There will be memories which we shall forever retain - play off games, biology, parties, the senior prank, our friends, and many oth- ers. Indeed we were not disap- pointed with the best year of high school. -Wally McGregor A look at the past brings out the truth of todays Seniors Top Row ( L to R ) Ryan Kaye, Steve Calder, Kirk Pinchon, Kyle Conrad, Rob Reboul, Bob Fitz, Matt Vranich, Mr. Morgan. I thought that this year detentions were go- ing to be different. As opposed to the last few years where simply being late to a class would get you detention, this year they were going to be for the real criminalsBut de- tentions arc being given out as one hears Sandy say, ”Where you goin'? Not only are they given out at rapid pace, but the reasons that most detentions are given out are amaz- ingly ridiculous, or funny depending on how one looks at them. About 1 month ago a stu- dent received a detention for urging a stu- dent to throw food. I'll say it again, urging a student to throw food.” Rumour had it the same student ”urged his younger brother to shoot Dad's head off with and 80 millimeter howitzer. I s'pose that fell through. I con- stantly feel as if I'm in an inter-city school and the need for discipline is immense. Urg- ing a student to throw food? Is that an ac- tion in need of disciplinary action, or tbas someone worried that they wouldn't make their daily detention quota? Detentions have seemigly made their way through the school halls as teachers mood representatives . So I've concluded that one can remain detention free if he knows how to brown-nose fast, and B.S. even faster. By ChadVranich. Guilty Till Innocent ? Oh, YEAH!!! The class of '89 has been in- volved in just about every area of Chagrin Falls High School this year - everything from the arts and athletics to the fundraisers for the prom in the spring. Class spirit reached an all-time high during Homecoming weekend and the Junior Senior powderpuff foot- ball game. And we won, too! - all right junior girls! Our cheerleaders with their wild wigs and the anti- Deadhead slogan, 89 will get by , added a lot of spirit and fun to the game. A lot of juniors take a large part in the theater, music and journa- lism sections of our school. Three juniors starred in the fall play, Ar- senic and Old Lace . Juniors have a strong voice in the choir, and some of us perform in the strings group. Class of '89 band members did a great job both in marching band and concert band. Juniors are a ma- jor part of the staff of the yearbook staff and the literary magazine. Getting Better! Prism. Juniors, whether we are act- ing, writing, or making music, are having a great time working on these kinds of things which every- one can enjoy! Clubs, clubs, and more clubs! Now that we are juniors, we get to be officers, too! A.F.S., the 'Inter- national Club', has a lot of partici- pation from the junior class. SADD is more prominent than ever this year with a lot of back-up by its active junior class members. And what about athletics? Track, gymnastics, football, soccer, bask- etball, volleyball - you name it and we're on it! Not only are we great participants, we are great specta- tors. Take a look at the zoo! Many juniors now have their varsity let- ters which accounts for the mas- sive increase in orange-and-black jackets with '89' on them. Nothing like showing your school spirit, right? And junior cheerleaders shout loud and clear, Go, Cha- grin! Orange you glad we go to C.F.H.S.? You bet! - Andrea Rostek 51 Eight o'clock in the morn- ing on a Saturday? We are ex- pected to THINK at that hour on a weekend?! For a lot of us it takes some effort to get up at ten and do nothing for a few hours. Yet, here we are, in school on Saturday, trying to prove to the College Ad- missions Board that we can PSAT A Necessary Agony for a Joyful Life -John Rost do analogies and prove alge- braic equations. For those of us aiming for National Merit Scholarships, the pressure is even more intense. Most of us, however, just want to do well enough to get into the college of our choice. It was really kind of strange to walk into the foyer and see practically every member of the junior class sitting there and looking like he or she needed about four cups of coffee. Some of us even wore pajamas. Look out. Harvard, here we come! After we figured out which room we were supposed to be in and got there, we had to wait around while the test su- pervisor took attendance. Then the supervisor told us to read the instructions to yourself, while I read them aloud. (does that phrase sound familiar?) and fill oui all those bubbles on the in- formation sheet. Then-THE TEST itself! What is the best title for the selection? What is the ratio of the two quantities? What is the volume of this aquarium? And those little stop signs at the end of sections get really annoying after two hours. So, it's over! Wow, that was a thrill. I'm going home and getting some sleep. As Tom Puette so aptly put it, Wish I could do it every Saturday. -Andrea Rostek Dave Alexander Peggy Bartunek Hillary Beaven Vanessa Bello Maurice Berns Laura Bifano Steven Blair Stephen Bloch Tom Bennett Brett Bryson Eric Burnett 52 Jamie Carlton Charles Cary Stephanie Chandler Rene Church Tim Clark Michael Cosentino Bobby Cox Glen Davidson Laverne Davis Michelle DeFranco Top: Sue Werber shares the secret of her beau- ty Above: Steve Blair studies hard so that one day he will be on the air. Fashion in Chagrin 1987-88 Preppy? Usually. On the conservative side? Well, yeah, probably. However, Chagrin kids undoubtedly stay right with the fashion trends. Long hair is in for girls this year-whether in a ponytail, French braid, or held back by a pretty, stylish barette. Scarves-plaid, floral, and paisley-are great accesories and are worn in a variety of ways. Victorian looking leather boots which lace up the front are everywhere. For a more casual look. Chagrin girls usually go to sebago docksiders or Tretorn tennis shoes. Skirts are either worn long or short-no in betweens. Chagrin guys generally stick to Levi jeans and plaid flannel or wool shirts worn over T- shirts. There are a lot of rugby shirts striped in bright colors this year, as well as sweaters in different stripes and patterns worn over an oxford shirt (even though. Chagrin guys wear turtlenecks more often than guys from other schools). High-tops are also definately in. Things EVERYBODY is wearing this year- DENIM, faded or acid washed, jackets and ripped jeans, tie-dyed shirts, and college sweatshirts. Of course, the girls at Chagrin still keep up the tradition of matching their socks to their sweaters, the guys are casual looking, and Chagrin has the reputation of being the copy- ing machine, meaning everybody dresses the same. We do have our own little ways of dressing which label us as the Chagrinites, nut hey, that's what makes us unique. 55 Jeff Krause Patrick Kraven Todd Kruse Jennifer Lambeth Barbra Landy Joe Largey Jodi Lerz Jennifer Lezak Rod Lindheim Todd Linville Dave MacDonald Michaela Maras Polly McCroby James Mcllroy 56 i Amy McLanahan Mark Mears Aron Medow Tania Minor Christine Minsel Jennifer Mitchell Dave Mullins Scooter Munz Scott Neilson Suzy Nelson Beth Nichols Akiko Okamoto Paige O'Neil Rachel Oler 1 p Cl H Ki a 'ai f v 1 A1 Top: Joel Fullum patiently waits for his coun- celor. Many juniors choose to take socio- logy. The highlight of the semester course is the mock wedding. During a nine week period, students may choose a marriage partner, complete a marriage booklet and participate in an actual wedding ceremony that takes place at The Federated Church. After the couples are married they can nave a child (an egg baby). They must keep track of their baby's activ- ities for one week. It is suggested that they do not keep it at school for fear of abuse or kidnapping. They are to treat it as though it is a real child. No leaving it in their locker or at home without a babysitter. Single life has its advantages, too. Singles are al- lowed to adopt an egg-baby which they too must treat as if it were alive. Overall, the whole marriage lesson makes students aware of the advan- tages and disadvantages of married life. Also, they learn what's involved in the planning of a family. -Nancy Elliott 58 Kristy Scolaro Courtney See Scott Simpson Nick Sincaglia Erica Sommer Brett Summerdyke Greg Tabickman Megan Thomas Scott Thomas Martha Trickey Julia VanVliet Kathy Warfield Tim Wennerstrom Suzanne Werber Tina Whaley Kelly Whitelaw Top: Polly McCroby, Liz Hamje, Scooter Munz, and Scott Simpson dance all night long. As sophomores, we are still bossed by the seniors and, at the same time, unable to successfully control the freshmen. As a re- sult, the sophomore year is of- ten expected to be boring and uneventful. Our class, however, has made the most of the dull- ness by becoming involved with several productive fund raisers. The first and most profi- table of these was the magazine drive which raised quite a bit of money. Then came the selling of the Homecoming mums which was followed by the or- dering of the Josten class rings. We then prepared ourselves for our last fund raiser which in- volved the selling of carnations for Valentine's Day. The money raised will be used when organ- izing next year's prom which is sure to be memorable. The events of the past year have proven that there is no limit as to what the sophomore class of 1990 can accomplish in the years to come. - Scott Hall 61 Britton Badgley Christine Baker Carla Bankhead James Bannerman Scott E. I'm fifteen now, and my sister is eleven. To her and her friends. I'm pretty big stuff; they come up to me and say, Ooooh! It's Bryan Tervo - the big fresh- man! I just smirk and reflect on my life at the High School. For in- stance, I am almost 6'3 ; all of the little people (no pun intended) can't see me serenading Halle Philpott during my lunch period, which 1 did do. They can't see me getting put at the end of a lunch line or ousted from the zoo, both of which actually happened. From these examples, anyone can de- duce that socially, freshmen are the lowest of the low. Now the freshmen academical- ly, is a whole other story. The aver- age freshman, like me, comes to the high school expecting another year of school. Well, let me tell you, I was sorely disappointed. In- stead I was forced with not just school, but HIGH SCHOOL. Up until now, I felt superior to my classmates; now, every freshman is at the same level. They all take school very seriously at the begin- ning, trying to impress everyone - including themselves. This is until some of them find out that it is a losing battle and they had just bet- ter concentrate on staying eligible for sports. The others get good grades, but are mowed down by the upper class jocks who are just giving the little nerds a hard time. All freshman wonder why they are picked on so much. Well, I fig- ure that it all started back with the first senior class - they picked on all the little guys, so when the lit- tle guys became big guys, they said, Remember when we were freshmen and we were picked on? Well, I think they should get the same! I also think that as long as there are seniors and freshmen, the freshmen will always feel the wrath of the big seniors, and right- ly so. I feel for what these seniors are doing, and all I have to say is, Watch out Class of '94! - Bryan Tervo 71 Frank Alicino Annemarie Aquaviva Heidi Baker Wendy Bennett Billy Bienias Dina Biscotti Scott Blech Robert Bochik Jennifer Branthoover Heather Bruce Heidi Bryan Becky Buzogany Michael Buzogany Cindy Cahill Johnna Calhoun Jennifer Carll Scott Chandler Robert Cockrell Shawn Conley Jeremy Corlett « 72 Alicia Cottone Fred Cox Richard Craig Michelle Cull Christopher DeVries Eliza Dinsmore Todd Donovan Eddie Ellis Megan Exline Megan Ferguson Judith Fitch Sally Florkiewicz Patrick Foley Jeremy Fow Michelle Frappier Mario Galey Tracy Groth Jason Heartz Michael Heartz Holly Hendrix Far Left: Freshman football team plays toward victory. They are simply amazing. That's all I can say about Todd Dona- van and Chris Roberts. They are the creators of it all, a start to some- thing really big. It all began at the be- ginning of the year. Chris and Todd wanted to start a new club. They stationed themselves in room 109 on the base- ment floor of Chagrin Falls High School. I never knew that there was such intelligence at the Freshman level. They have come a long way since then. Now they have even bigger hopes and plans for fu- ture things including becoming an actual class with a teacher. They would call it Con- temporate Communica- tions Class (C to the power of three). Cur- rently they do most of the video taping for the athletic department. Selected Varsity Events. This is quite convienent for the coaches and teams. Most of their really large pieces of equip- ment have been dona- ted to them by the Ath- letic Department. rvi the present time they control the music betwen classes and communicate with the community through the bulletin board located on East Washington. They also write their own scripts for their news programs that are broadcasted in the li- brary and commons on occasion. To me, they are genuises. One day I went to talk to them and they were in the main office helping the tech- nician fix the loud speaker. I overheard Dr. Trusso saying T think that I've created a mon- ster ' Neither Todd nor Chris ever throw out any old parts. You nev- er know when you might need them ' they say. Todd told me that he has taken apart just about every piece of equipment that he owns. That's what I do when I get bored ' he states. Room 109 is filled with a lot of life and ex- citement. Never a dull moment. Organized equipment, and a three dimensional light box which they call a nu- clear power device, liv- ens it up. They have no limited staff. If you have a talent or want to develop one you are welcome. They have vice- presidents, electri- cians, programmers and even an art and gra- phicscoordinator. She is a freshman, Amanda Parke. Chris says smil- ing, We are a leader in innovative technol- ogies. This happens to be their slogan. They have stationary and business cards. Both Todd and Chris are down in room 109 up to four and five per- iods a day. Chris com- ments, Not a day goes by when we all don't do something having to do with electronics. The two of them are the ones to watch, for one day they might be the leaders of our world. They are well on their way! Above: Why are you smiling, Mike Zaretsky? You have three more years to go! Similar success was found in the state tournament, as the Tigers bowed out in the districts, missing the cut by only one stroke. The team was led by seniors Jeff Materni, Chris Young, Lee Ladyga, Leif Nielsen, Paul Doman, and Kristen Clark, who finished third in the women's state tournament. Gerhardt purposely scheduled games against very tough teams to ready the squad for the post season state tournament. Playing teams from four triple A schools, strong local teams from U.S., Hudson, and W.R.A, and the now equally challenging teams from our own conference (including Ohio soccer's 1987 state champions, Kenston H.S.) made this season ugly and at times unbearable for both fans and players who were unaccustomed to losing. Coach Gerhardt's strategy showed much promise as the team won the sectional tournament with its last victory in an unforgetable game against Hawken school. Chagrin advanced to the district tournament where they lost to an overpowering west side team from Fairview. Captain Thad Barry, a four year veteran, was probably the most valuable player on the team. Everyone enjoyed watching his agressive and skilled style of play. Thad was one of the nine seniors on the team. Most of the players were underclassmen and this will make next year's team very experienced. This is a great advantage that this year's team did not have. Junior Aaron Jacobs will be team captain next year and everyone wishes him and the team the best of luck since they will have an even harder schedule than this year's team had. A slump followed, and a winless streak of four games closed the season, their re- cord standing at 2-7-3. The talent being there, these freshmen will undoubtedly be the future varsity stars. Being a first year team means not having the chance to get the feeling of playing as a team. However, even with this disad- vantage and the fact that the team was very young (11 underclassmen), the season was a success. Coach Bill Honsinger was terrific. Not only did he teach us skill but he helped us realize what a team should be like. With fourteen returning players, you can look forward to a good team. I hope you can come and support them a little more next season; it means a lot to the players. Here are some girls who earned some special awards. They are: Girls Scholastic Soccer League-Eastern Division; First Team: Beth Edwards, Kerry Edwards Second Team: Beth Goodwin, Tricia Kihlstrom Honorable Mention: Sally Florkiewicz, and Kelly Redding All Greater Cleveland Girls Soccer Team; First Team: Beth Edwards, Kerry Edwards Second Team: Tricia Kihlstrom Top: Co-captain Kerry Edwards boots a corner kick. The rain played a major role in backing up the season, but soon these Lady Tigers were off with a bang. The team finished up the season with an overall record of 9-9 and a 5-2 record in the CVC. After losing Coach Hanson last year, the search was on for somebody to fill her shoes. This was soon taken care of by Joanne Kirk who quickly took the team under wing. Coach Kirk (or captain Kirk as the team fondly calls her) worked the girls hard in tennis skills and overall physical fitness, both of which paid off. Returning lettermen to the team were seniors Lisa Kah, Jill Kramer, Kristin LaGraff, and Kelly Lynch, junior Liz Hamje, and sophomore Nancy Schoenr. New members were seniors Robin Cocking and Heather Smith, and junior Erica Sommer. Although none of the players advanced past districts, many individual awards were won. Second singles player, Jill Kramer, and third singles. Erica Sommer, were both awarded second team all Geauga County. The first doubles team of Kelly Lynch and Kristin LaGraff were awarded all CVC First Team for second year. All Geauga County First Team, and Plain Dealer OTCA Second Team. All in all the team had a successful season they can all be proud of. VARSITY TENNIS Top Row: Erica Sommer, Nancy Schoenner, Katie LaCroix, Jody Lerz. Chagrin Falls football history was made in 1987, as for the first time a Tiger football squad participated in the state playoffs. In compiling an 8-4 overall record, the Tigers lost only to playoff- bound schools, including Wickliffe, Chardon, and Hawken (twice). Their 5-2 CVC record was good enough for a share of the CVC title, a title that had eluded Chagrin Falls for a decade. Only a dissapoint- ing loss to Wickliffe on the final Friday of the regular season pre- vented an outright conference championship. The Tigers handled their first playoff opponent. Perry, by a score of 25-15. The follow- ing week, they were crushed by state runner-up Hawken, 36-6. All- league performers were Chad Vranich, Matt Stanton, Tom Bel- shaw, Jim Cohn, Cliff Strickland, and Scott Thomas. T.J. Floriewicz was not only named all-league kicker, but first team all-state as well. 128 Top left: Scott Thomas dashes between se- veral Solon defenders. To be at the school on Saturday morning, eight o'clock sharp, is a feat worthy of praise itself. The team's record of 2-6-2 does not reflect the efforts put forth by the players in practice or in the game. This was a building season, with many players going both ways. The J.V. team was made up of juniors, soph- omores, and freshmen. A large part of the varsity team's success can be attributed to the J.V. men. These men played each week's opposing team and quite often gave the varsity team a run for its money. The J.V. team was coached by Matt Chinchar (offense) and Dan Ehrenbeit (defense). -Steve Bloch Top: Tim Clark takes a handoff from Steve Blair, as Kirby Linck practices his after-touchdown dance. Although both teams did not have outstanding records, there were some excellent runners on both teams. Leading the boys' team was sen- ior Eric Harsh, who qualified for the State Cross Country meet in Columbus. Also, contributing greatly to the team's success were seniors Kris Koprowski and Greg Lineweaver, junior Jon Zar- etsky, sophomores Todd Desberg, Seth Miller, and Andy Rosette, and freshman Brad Lineweaver. The girls' team was led by junior Megan Thomas who, like Eric, qualified for the State Cross Country meet. Not far behind Megan, were other juniors Laura Robertson and Majida Rizk, sophomore Liz Youngberg, freshmen Laura Wurster and Megan Ferguson, and last but certainly not least, seniors Anne Marie Waltos, Teresa Moran, and Heidi Johns. These Tiger runners were coached by Mr. John Hurst who, after twenty-five years of coaching cross country, has decided to let someone else take charge. In the years past. Coach Hurst has had both individual runners and whole teams qualify for the State Meet. His outstanding coaching will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. -Heidi Johns CROSS COUNTRY Top Row: Dan Tutolo, Kris Koprowski, Eric Harsh, Brad Lineweaver 2nd Row: Megan Thomas, Heidi Johns, Laura Robertson, Laura Wurster, Coach John Hurst 1st Row: John Houst, Majida Rizk, Megan Ferguson, Ann Marie Waltos, Theresa Moran. Tigers Finally Beat West Geauga After numerous attempts, the class of 1988 men's basketball squad defeated its nemesis. West Geauga, to obtain a share of the CVC title and a 13-1 league record. This year, the Dynamic Duo of T.J. Florkiewicz and Ryan Kaye (both averaging over 20 points per game) was joined by senior Steve Calder to form, perhaps, the Terrific Trio. Brian Desberg ran the show as point guard, and Kris Koprowski starred in a supporting role as the final member of the starting five. Other contributes were senior Chris Clevenger and juniore Rob Kaye and Tate Pierce. The Tigers have thus far defeated Lutheran West and Beachwood to gain a sectional title. GYMNASTICS HANGS TOUGH Loses Three Meets by Less than 5 This was a year of change for varsity gymnas- tics. A new coach, Pat Witucky, brought not only a new teaching method, but new ideas for meets and practices as well. The team itself, led by seniors Jenny Karpiel and Kate Wiese, junior Peggy Bartunek and sophomore Ingrid Leusch, finished at 4-6. In a neck-in-neck conference, the Tigers performed well against each school, but lost many meets by only a handful of points and never by more than 20. Left: Ingrid Leusch during her floor routine. The sophomores, who were returning letter win- ners along with seniors, were Anne Clark and Tricia Kihlstrom. The team, during the season, beat Solon and Mentor who were both top ranked in the area, and this proved to be a turning point for them. The team faced larger schools in each match but was able to finish the year with a winning record. The Tigers were runners-up at the Brush Tournament and ended up eighth at both the Richmond Hts. and Kenston Invitational Tournament. Todd Feucht (130) captured the title at Brush, while Brian McKenna (112) and Tom Belshaw(HWT) were champions and Kenston. Other grapplers that placed were Adam Lechman (189), Wally McGregor (152), Matt Durbin (119), and Todd Desberg(135). Belshaw also earned first team CVC as McKenna, Feucht, McGregor, and Lechman were all second team. Aaron Mitchell, Jeremy Fow, Tim Clark, Gabe Orazen, Steve Bloch, and Eric Burnett contributed their talents to the squad and look forward to another year on the varsity line-up. The hard work and determination paid off for five wrestlers who qualified to the District Tournament. They were McKenna, Durbin, Desberg, Lechman, and Belshaw. The tandem of Lechman and McKenna even earned a trip to the state tournament in Columbus, where they both placed fourth in the state. It seems almost impossible to express all the feelings and tell o f all the events that accompanied our school this year. We always like to think that this year, our year, was different from all those before it and all those yet to come. We like to believe that our year was special, in some way unique, and it was. Not because of the school, the time (or the channel), but because of the people. The people of Chagrin Falls High School made this year different from all others. From fall sports all the way through graduation, this year was special. Following the pumpkin roll, fall turned briskly into winter, when we got in excess of sixty inches of snow, but never missed a day of school. Basketball started, Christmas break seemed ever-so-short again, and we were blown into 1988. February meant the Valentines Dance, and track season was not far behind. Runners on the track also meant other spring sports, OABR, and Prom. In retrospect, the year looked endless from August's point of view, but now seems to have passed by in a flash. There will be no other year or class like ours, and really... 167 ...or Twinsburg, or Kenston, or Wickliffe, or West G„ or Solon, or Chardon, or Hawken, or... you don't go to Orange? ... Orange you glad
