Inspector D. Tective here. While wandering around the Midwest, I stumbled on a small town called Chagrin Falls (in case you’ve heard of it.) Maybe it was the famous Falls that intrigued me or perhaps the ever-popular Popcorn Shop. At any rate, I took it upon myself to investigate the situation. I started at the police station to see if anything exciting ever occurred in Chagrin. I just happened to meet a few high school students while I was there (they weren’t in trouble or anything) and decided to investigate the High School. After all, even small-town investigations have to be narrowed down to specifics! Top: The natural falls of Chagrin. GIRLS’ FOOTBALL GAmE After many late practices, complaints from the faculty and a controversial pep rally, the players and coaches were excited to actually play the game Sunday afternoon, September 16th. The seniors won 40-8 and became the third class to end their football careers 2-0. Additional- ly, 40 points is the new record for total points scored by one team. The senior offense was led by tailback Lolita Bello’s four touchdowns, split end Tracy Carpenter’s touchdown reception and a touchdown run by quarterback Nancy Fitz. This year the student body, par- ticularly Student Council, set tradi- tion instead of merely following it. Thursday night, Student Council organized a parade and pep rally which was followed by the bonfire and a social in the commons. The band, cheerleaders and fall sports teams walked up the hill to the high school from the old post of- fice, while the queen candidates, the attendants and their escorts rode in convertibles. The fall sports captains were introduced at the pep rally in addition to inspirational speeches by Larry Ar- nold and Bill Pieramici. We did have a bonfire, as a result of the students cooperating with the ad- ministration to alleviate the prob- lems. The gathering in the commons, sponsored by Math Club, topped off the successful evening. Homecoming 9 The opening ceremonies began an exciting evening in Chagrin Friday. Monica Monastra, escorted by Joe O’Connell was crowned queen. The attendants and their escorts were: seniors Amy Brooks and Chris Zetwick, Cindy Keim and Bill Bierman, Sarah Owen and Mike Schlaker, juniors Leigh Shields and Dale Tomalin, sophomores Anne O’Donnell and Matt Gary and freshmen Carlene Cox and Bri- an Desberg. The football team got off to a slow start but rallied after halftime to nairowly fall to Kenston 21-18. Saturday night, the senior class held the Homecoming Dance. The emblem of Chagrin Falls High School was designed in 1914 by Reveley Beattie, Senior Class President. It was intended to serve various purposes: IN gold with numerals, it became the regular Senior class pin. As written in the 1914 Annual, a cheaper version would be made which might “be worn by any member of the high school who has passed, satisfactorily, the mid-year examinations of the Freshman year.” 18 75 Years of Yearbooks CHAGRIN FALLS AS AN INDUSTRIAL TOWN “Excerpts from the 1914 Annual1’ “Although our little village among the hills is usually thought of as merely a residential town, upon closer observation, it will be discovered that it is also somewhat of an industrial center. Taken as a whole, the population is of the great middle or working class. The town boasts of four very flourishing manufactories, giving employment to quite a large number of our residents. These four are: The Adams Bag Company, The Ober Manufacturing Company, The Falls Foundry, and The Deerlick Oilstone Company.’ The largest of these is The Adams Bag Company, which manufactured paper and burlap and cotton sacks and later paper sacks during the 1860’s. In 1914 it employed over 100 residents of Chagrin Falls. The Ober Manufacturing Company began in 1873 as a retail lumber yard, but shifted to iron work and machinery. In 1914 their shipping list included every state in the Union and they employed 60-75 men. The Falls Foundry manufactured grey iron castings, the greater part of which were shipped to the Ford Motor Car Company of Detroit, Mich. “Besides these principal industries . . . there are many smaller ones doing business. These include the industries common to the average small town. It will be seen from this that Chagrin Falls has a firm position in the industrial world, and that there is a bright future for her.” History of Chagrin 1 High School Dictionary—1914 Annual The Faculty—A group of people paid to let the Seniors run the school. Athletics—A common course of study in High School. Exams—See Flunk. Cicero—A synonym for pony. Glee Clubs—A howling success. Indolence — A condition found in all Flats and many Slphs. Upper classmen alone are immune. Flunk—See Exams. A Flat — A certain unique species of the animal kingdom—color, green; intellect, very small. A Soph—An instrument of torture designed for the lowly Flat. A Junior—A cross between a Soph and a Flat. The Hall — A trysting place for lovers sly. When parted by walls so cold and high. Teare—Something in the form of a transparent drop of fluid matter. Webster — Some unknown high brow who has written a book called the “Dictionary,” which now is commonly used as an ornament to the school room and to convert a common chair into a baby’s high stool. Theme —A mass of words scraped into a heap by brain racking effort upon which the Professor may vent his ill- temper. Us—None of your business. You—We’re not saying. A Captain — A personage, celebrated by his ability to keep balanced upon the line between failure and the passing grade; the shining light of the school. First, the senior women beat the junior girls in a record setting victory. Then, before we knew it, football season arrived and with that, so did Homecoming Weekend. Everyone enjoyed “A Night in New York,” especially this year’s senior attendants, Cindy Keim, Sarah Owen. Amy Brooks, and our reigning queen, Monica Monastra. The senior class helpped put on all this year’s homecoming activities, including the parade, pep rally, and bonfire. Upon completion of another successful soccer season, winter sports began. Congratulations to all those competing seniors who helped lead their teams to victory. The senior class again held a Valentine Dance, in fact the second annual one. Now, as this is being written, we are entering Spring. The class officers trust everyone will have had an incredibly great spring break!!! The Junior Class was faced with the tremendous task of earning enough money for the Prom. Demonstrating excellent class spirit, however, the class took on the challenge. Work started in July as the class greatly profitted on the concessions at the Swim Invitational. The Juniors became further acquainted with concessions during the football season. Good effort paid off as large sums of money was earned during those Friday nights. In December, the class launched a successful Bomber Bash dance. More money was added to the treasury when the class sold carnations on Valentine’s Day. These activities should provide for a luxurious and memora- ble Prom at Canterbury Country Club in May. In the fall, the Class sold the annual Homecoming mums to raise some money. Not too long afterwards, Jostens came to school and sold class rings. In February, the Class showed their spirit by selling magazines, to help pay for the Prom next year. They lost out in tourna- ments at District Finals in a dramatic tie breaking shoot out. Seniors Darren Wyville, Tad Taft, and Lee Mighdoll all made first team CVC, and Bob Darden, Bryan Barosh, and Tim Topalian received 2nd Team Honors. Goalie, Darren Wyville was honored as a member of the Greater Cleveland All Star Team and Tad Taft had an Honorable Mention. Darren was also 1st team All-Ohio and All Midwest Soccer Team. This year’s Varsity B Team had its best record ever with a steady im- provement throughout the season. Several outstanding players this year were seniors, P.J. They definately were a better team than the 2-7-1 record indicated. With a super attitude they took on many skilled teams with the Tiger determination so often seen on their faces. Chagrin gave up early points in many games and it became a hard struggle to catch up. The JV started out slowly, but according to Coach Matt Chinchar, the team settled down and began to play, good, tough foot- ball after the first two games. They finished strongly, as they won their last three games. The freshmen were anxious to get started in their first high school sport and began with two big wins, they however, ran into tough opponents, Solon and Kenston. The team rebounded with decisive victories over Twinsburg and Wickliffe, even more impressive considering the dwindling num- ber of healthy players. The starting lineup was made up of five seniors, Nancy Fitz, Tracy Carpenter, Heather Bannerman, Heidi Exline and Cathy Clegg. These girls were helped by senior Julie Kinloch and juniors Kim Carpenter, Lisa Kihlstrom, Mary Zetwick. and Amy Shuster as well as sophomore Anne O’Donnell. This was a special year for senior Nancy Fitz. She made her one thousandth point of her career in the last regular season game. Jane Phend and Sue Wise are the only other girls in Chagrin history to achieve this plateau. She was also voted Most Valuable Player in the CVC. Tracy Carpenter also made first team CVC all League and Heidi Exline and Cathy Clegg made second team CVC. Although the team was stopped in Regional Semifinals, before reaching their goal of State, they had an excellent season over all. Pass me the ball!” Scott Banda covers his man well on defense Chris Calder puts another one up as Darren Wyville and Mike Boehringer look on Records seem to indicate that the 1984-85 Boy’s Varsity Bas- ketball Team was the highest scoring team in the school’s history. The regular season ended with Chagrin averaging 70.5 points per game while posting an impressive record of 15-5. The trademarks of the team were super passing and an incredible fast break. Ten players performed in at least half of the total quarters. There was a tremendous balance with all eleven players averaging at least one point per game. Chris Calder was the leading scorer in the league, and was also named the Most Valuable Player in the CVC, Geauga Jock of the Week, the Greater Cleveland Coaches Associ- ation All star Team, and the Western Reserve Coaches All Star Team. Darren Wyville was the fifth leading scorer in the league, and took First Team all CVC. He was named part of the Greater Cleveland Coaches Association All Star Team and the Western Reserve Coaches Association All Star Team. Dave Bargar was ap- pointed to the Western Reserve Coaches Association All Star Team. The third leading scorer was not a starter and eight players had at least twenty assists for the year. They were handicapped by a lack of size, but made up for it in quickness and enthusiasm. Varsity Basketball 105 JV Combines Youth and Experience The JV Team had a very good season under Coach Dave Quesinberry, as evidenced by their 18-2 record. The Team was led by the experience of sophomores Brian Bargar, Josh Gibbs and Dave Martin, while freshmen Steve Calder, T.J. Its regular season had many victories, and many team members made it past Regional competition and on to State. Soph- omores Sue Tomalin, Colleen Thome and Laura Falsgraf competed at State, along with freshman Nikki Charleton. Senior Dale Porter, the only male swimmer, also made it to State. A familiar phrase heard by many of Ralph Quisenberry’s friends and students won’t be heard anymore. These words were silenced by his death on January 20, 1985. Ralph L. Quisenberry was a teacher, coach, and an athletic director, but most of all he was a loyal friend and staunch supporter of all Chagrin Valley athletics. “Coach, as he was best known, served Chagrin Falls High School and the community for 38 years. In 1947, his first year at Chagrin, he led the Tigers Football Team to an 8-0 record, and in 1966, his final year as head coach, his team won 7 and tied 2. At the end of the season he was named Coach of the Year. He assumed the duties of athletic director in 1962, and served in this position until he retired in 1980. In 1972 he was named National Athletic Director of the Year by the American Associ- ation of Health and Physical Education and Recreation Teachers. The community and the school honored him by naming the high school gymnasium after him. Mr. Quisenberry helped form the Chagrin Valley Conference, which began play in the 1963- 64 school year. In his retirement he served as secretary of the conference as well as president of the Ohio Athletic Directors Association, was a former president of the Northeastern Ohio Athletic Directors Association, and active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In 1976 he was inducted into the Ohio High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame and became a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame of Bowling Green University, his alma mater. His memory will linger on for all those who knew him. We dedicate the 1985 Zenith in his memory. Mrs. Lander has made a great effort to get more students in- terested in the library, and present them with up-to-date, popular reading materials. Except for the “smoking johns” being converted into “real’ restrooms, and the new Activity Board, the commons have remained relatively unchanged. The C.A.B. room no longer has couches, but is now used more as a conference room. Mrs. Gilmore is still single handedly keeping students under control. Journey to Crystal City Winter Formal On December 8, 1984, the Winter Formal, “A Journey to Crystal City”, made history. This was the first dance to ever take place in the commons. Normally sponsored by AFS, this year the cheerleaders took over the responsibility of this special winter activity. The cheerleaders worked very hard Saturday afternoon decorating the commons, and their time and effort certainly showed. The commons was transformed into a ‘‘Crystal City”.
