Ohio 44022 (216) 247-5500 STEPPING OUT In some way. everyone at Chagrin Falls High School does his own step ping out. Although we all march to the beat of a different drummer, ev eryone is still able to step in unison because of school spirit. Steps are a part of all students' lives. While the seniors are anxiously stepping to ward the exit, the juniors are step ping on everyone In their attempt to raise money for the Prom. In the low er classes, the sophomores are step ping on the freshman and the fresh man are falling on the front steps. People are plodding through their classes, stalking prospective dates, and strutting on and off the athletic field. This yearbook is dedicated to all the stepping out that each and every one of us does in our high school career. Mark Easley and John Moyse (canoers). Most of the upperclassmen took on jobs or travelled to foreign places. Others enjoyed the life of partying, attend ing concerts at Blossom, or bumming around Chagrin. As summer came to an end. the hard work really began Band started practicing for the season, while the football, soccer, volleyball, and girl's boy’s cross country teams worked up a sweat In the hot summer sun. Only a few were brave enough to er dure the numbing temperature on that bitter cold night. October 20 The bonfire, however, sparked warmth and spirit into all. and thus began Homecoming Mums again were part of the Homecoming scene They were sold by the sopho more class during school on Friday and before the game Our lovely aueen Janice Jeffries shone on Homecoming night, accompanied by her attendants Balloons were re leased in celebration of the event and a flood of psyched students rushed out onto the field to create a tunnel for the enthusiastic football players Unfortunately, the game didn't go quite as expected Brett Rudolph scored our only touchdown, and the Tigers didn’t claim the extra point Wickcllffe got the upper hand with a score of 7-6 Although many were disappointed, we finished with an air of celebra tlon The Homecoming dance was a big hit Over 130 couples and stags crowded the Ralph L. Stu- dents came dressed in clothes depicting their favorite era. The most popular fashions were punk and those from the 1950’s and 1920’s. The dance was promoted by Student Council and evoked a lot of school spirit. Those dressed in togas twisted to the beat of Sean Kay and his band. Meanwhile, poodle, skirts and bobby socks jivved to the rock ’n roll provided by Dave Pearce and his band of Merry Men. Punks punked out to the unconventional sounds of Sacred and the Nerf Peo- ple. Everyone seemed to enjoy himself thoroughly. Halloween also pro- vided an opportunity for showing school spirit. Students came to class In costumes ranging from punks to mouseketeers. And. of course, there were action-packed football games to generate a lot of excitement as did the soccer team’s preparation for district tournament. All in all, school spirit really abounded at C.F.H.S. this year. AN END, AN INTERIM, A BEGINNING It seems like yesterday that we were children, playing within the safety of our own backyard. We were protected and secure and forbidden to cross the street. Then our world widened, as we found ourselves packed off to school. Endless days of sitting in the classroom followed. It seemed like a life sentence to us. We didn't pay any attention to the clock on the wall, to the change of the seasons or the passing of the years. We simply followed our schedules and grew up and matured. All of a sudden, the end was in sight. Our school days are over now. We are adults: at least, our birth certifi- cates say so. As we turn around to reflect upon those years, we realize with sudden sadness that our carefree childhood has come to an end. Remember, how much we anticipated being seniors, how much fun it would be? Before we knew it. we were there: and. all of a sudden, we were scared! Strangely. It took us seventeen years to realize how precious childhood had been. We spent our last year straining somehow to make this one the best ever. And if we couldn't, we pretended it was so. We applied to colleges and poured through newspapers looking for next year's job. Somehow, we didn't get as much sleep as we did. when we were juniors. With the insecurity of the future looming ahead of us. we became preoccu- pied with ourselves. Underclassmen noticed a change in us and found us less admirable than in years before. No wonder, with all the pressing and important decisions we had to make! Maybe next year, they'll understand. Whether It was apparent or not. we all grew up this year, perhaps more so than in any of the three previous years combined. As a class, we began to look beyond the facade behind which each of us was hiding, as we looked ahead with fearful eyes. Now. In the waning moments of our childhood, we find ourselves at an interesting vantage point. Behind us are all those friends who have molded and Influenced us Into becoming what we are. and ahead of us lies the unknown. Our first few steps forward will be unsteady—we will be tempted to look back, only to discover, to our horror, that we cannot return. Therefore, friends, let's look to ecKI1„e 4, the future with faith. The opportunities are ours. With an undaunted spirit, let us step into a new be- SENIORS 17 ginning. Treasurer Cindy Keim, Vice-President The sophomore class has distinguished Itself as an energetic group of students, winning the Booster Drive two years In a row. This fall our efforts went into the Homecoming Mum Sale to boost our class treasury. A movie and a slide presentation promoting the sale of class rings followed shortly after. During the basketball season we sold Chagrin Falls key chains at the games. But fundraising was not our only goal, as evidenced by the impact we have made on many school activities and athletics. Sophomore talent excelled in varsity and junior varsity sports, cheerleading, choir and band, clubs and Peer Care. We are looking forward to many more accomplishments during the next three years. Bruce Campbell. and Mike Boehrinoer The Freshman class of 1986 is off to a good start at our new ex citing high school. The sale of candy-filled tins this year raised over $1600 in funds. The project was not only a very successful money-maker, but it generated the kind of school spirit that will keep our class together. We are hard-working and very enthusias- tic, as we have shown in the past through our participation in ath- letics. academics, and many school projects. Our Freshman year is just another step in the right direction. This year at CFHS will surely be remembered. Who could forget the terror of the first day at school when we walked in the door, only to get lost in the halls. It was frightening to see nothing but new faces and to get acquainted with jugs, of course! Although our classmates might change over the years, one thing is for sure—we. the Frosh Class of 86,” will stick together and do our very best to keep building upon our success and making our years here the best ever! Although the team will lose five seniors, it has enough depth that fans can look for the BA’s to be back next year. The Girl’s Cross Country team had a somewhat disappointing year which ended on a positive note, however. After finishing 8th at the State meet last year and losing several senior key runners, the la dies had a hard time coordinating their efforts al- though the potential was there. This year’s senior co-captains Jodi Janosek and Debbie Mendelsohn ran well, as did Sophomore Nancy Fitz who set the school record in the 5000 meters. Plagued with injur ies of one kind or another, the girls made their way through the season. Finally, at the Sectional meet, they all ran to their potential and placed first ahead of rival Kenston. Nonetheless, the team rebounded to beat tough West Geauga and Solon teams to finish with an impressive 7-2-1 record. Since there wasn’t much com- petition in the league as the scores indicate, the girls worked hard in practice and the competition was stiffer between themselves than when playing other teams. The Lady Tigers were led this year by starting seniors 5’6” Jane Phend and 5’2’’ Lettie Kinloch at guards. 5'11” Kara Koprowski at forward, junior 6’1” Ja- net Ward at center, and sophomore 6’0” Nancy Fitz at forward. Other players, who also deserve more credit for their hard work and dedication, are juniors Liane Harsh and Julie Shaffer, and sophomore. Julie Kinloch. Besides these eight talented young ladies, are: Tracy Carpenter. Heather Bannerman. Cathy Clegg. Heidi Exline, and Cindy Keim. who played all season on J.V. and Varsity teams, which enabled them to gain valu- able Varsity experience for next year. This is the tallest team Chagrin has started in the team’s history. They are now known for Ward. Fitz. and Koprowski’s ability to hit the boards. Besides being tall, the talent doesn’t stop when you mention guards as Jane Phend was a 3rd team All-Ohioan player last year and is on her way to becoming on the 1st team this year. Lettie Kinloch also is a definite asset to the team with her ability to run the plays and her deadly foul shot. Starting this year were guards Eric Arthurs and Ken Clark, for- wards Scott Banda and Mike Boehringer and Center John Bartunek. Their ability to shoot as well as rebound enabled them to finish with an almost perfect record. The freshmen deserve a lot of credit for their hard work and dedication. They finished the season by winning the Berk shire Tournament. This talented group of players will be a great asset to the junior varsity and varsity teams next year. A major problem for the team was the adjustment to the change in coaches for the second year in a row, even though Coaches Julie Fair and Pam Witucky worked hard in getting the girls ready. Some other problems were caused by several In- juries among the gymnasts and the loss of several key seniors, leaving seniors Sue Whyman and Au- drey Tomalin to lead the team. On the positive side, Sue Whyman had an outstanding individual record on the vault and qualified for the district meet. Other gymnasts who competed regularly were: Audrey Tomalin on vault and floor: Lolita Bello on vault: Kim Jicha and Barb Distad on bars: and Krysann Seidel on beam. The team hopes to regain their leadership and look forward to a rebuilding season next year. Kim Jicha practices a difficult bar routine. NASTICS 84 GRAPPLERS FACE A TOUGH SEASON Bottom Row D. J Marino This has been a very tough season for the Tiger Wrestlers with much competition from the C.V.C. teams. What hurt the team most was the lack of heavier wrestlers re- sulting in a lot of forfeits. Major contributors to the team this year were seniors John Season Record Marino, Scott Hovet, Tim Fory, Mark Masters, and Steve Richardson; juniors —2 Wins, 7 Losses Dave Cosentino. Mike Moroney. and Eric Gebler; and freshmen Erik Speed and Eric Whitelaw. The team was coached by John 3 AII-C.V.C. Wrestlers Ponlkvar. Another problem encountered this year was the youth of the team that 4 District Qualifiers had only five seniors. Hopefully, the team will be more experienced next year to make improvement unavoidable. The team Second place was honored by having three wrestlers named to the all C.V.C. team, while four —Berkshire Tournament wrestlers qualified for Districts, and the team placed second at the Berkshire Tournament. Coach Larry Arnold worked out with them every day doing the same things they were, which enabled the wrestlers to gain first-hand experience from their coach. The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders worked with the Varsity squads participating in pep rallies and helping in any way they could. All of them have talent and will do a great job as Varsity Cheerleaders next year. All three Varsity squads started their busy work during the summer at Cheerleading camp. None of them came home empty-handed. The Varsity Football squad re- ceived a spirit stick and a special ribbon for cheering skill. The Varsity Basketball squad also received a spirit stick, and the Varsity Soccer squad brought home a first place trophy and a special award for squad unity. In the tall we had our first club activity, a chocolate party at Sue Schiemann’s house. Almost twenty people came, and all brought something made of chocolate. During the Christmas season, we had another party at which we went Christmas caroling. This annual tradition is always lots of fun. Skiing is also a tradition with the German Club. Once during the winter we go skiing at Peek-n-Peak in New York, usually the day before President's Day. In the spring the Club goes to the Hofbrauhaus. In the past, we have gone twice each year, but because of financial cutbacks, we can go only once now. This was the first year that the club has charged a membership fee. In order to get more money in the treasury, every member had to pay one dollar. Now we have more than 60 members in the Club. The presidents are Sara Lang and Michelle McHenry. With the knowledge and experience gained at a summer work shop at Hiram College, we produced one heck of a yearbook. We extend our thanks to our new advisor. Mrs. Acker; Ralmor photographer, Doug Levine; and ICP man, John Fowley. We started off the year with a new room tor an office, a huge debt from last year, which cut down on pages and color for this year, and an amazingly large stall. However, by the middle of February, we had managed to pay off the debt and watched the staff dwindle down to six. Those tew spent many hours in their home away from home Room 126. Despite our ignorance to the hard work involved, those 12:00 a.m. Sunday meetings and dateless Friday nights, we succeeded in maintaining our sanity. Our creativity slowly deplet ed after writing endless copy and over 3,000 captions. The wandering cam- era became quite popular this year. If your picture is not in this yearbook, too bad. you had your chance! We would like to end this year by saying. Thank God. it’s over, and Look out Mr. Pica, you're going to die! ZENITH Do you suppose Christa ond Doug discovered an eccentric Where were oil these people on February 25th, our llnal dead photo? line?! ZENITH 118 Tiger Strength, Cha grin’s weight lifting club, is now in Its fifth year and going strong. Un- der the supervision of Mr. Matt Chinchar, the weight lifters meet three days a week to work on their individualized strength programs. Mr. Chinchar also believes in adding some variety to their program such as inner-squad tourna- ments, a power-lifting meet with Chanel High School, and a favorite event with the lifters, pre-exhaustion workouts. The Tiger Strength Club is also preparing for the Lift- a-thon” which is their own annual fund-raiser. Left side (bottom to top): P Miller B Craig C Schwalm. Right side (left to right): D Hess, J. To add to the club's new sound system, new ste- reo speakers were pur chased from such mon- ey making projects as bake sales, the Santa luncheon, and the “Come as your favorite teacher” dance. The dedicated juniors will carry on the CAB traditions in the year to come. Good luck, and have fun. CAB COMMONS Pete Hyde jams the tunes on WCOM during seventh period Commons. CAB 120 The Peer Care program, now in its 2nd year, is “Kids helping kids to help themselves.” Presently there are 42 trained P.C. members. Training involves a weekend workshop on listening and good communication skills. Additional education for members includes speakers on various topics of interest to young people. Peer Care members help kids deal with their own concerns and reach alternatives. Helping kids make realistic and responsible decisions without telling them what to do is the main purpose of Peer Care. First row (left to right) A. Chafe. J. London. C Warnock. B Gafle. Miss Dean.
