A NEW CHALLENGE-.. t A™EW LEADER-.....'.,- QRPORTLJNITY ADVERTISEMENTS' .. A NEW FACE 1979 is an ending for a few .... and a beginning for many. In this new decade we will face never ending challenges and new horizons, never forgetting the experiences and adventures, sometimes not so memorable, of our years at CFHS. 5 A NEW OPPORTUNITY I 6 Our Freshman year proved to be an interesting experience. Getting to schedule ourselves in various classes, we were usually unaware of what was in store. And our infamous eighth grade parties brought back fond memories as we were being kicked out of high school ones. As sophomores, we were busy with raising money with wrestling concessions, mums, and bake sales. Coming of age and perfecting our driving skills opened up our social lives and lessoned our worries of calling for rides home. We began our Junior year off with unity as the girls practiced for the annual football game, which they preoceeded to win. The guys got their first taste of varsity sports, and a more serious tone was put on the games. In the fall of our Senior year we were faced with the problem of deciding where we were going to apply for college, and the girls triumphed once again to end up 2-0. Florida plans for spring break were the main topic of concern and conversation rather than our classes. The Class of 80 has experienced many changes these past four years, found new friends and kept old ones, and we will never forget the times during our high school years spent together as a class. They played good baseball most of the time but lacked consistency; many times gaining big leads in the early innings, only to lose them in the Tatter part of the game. The Tigers lose only 3 Seniors, with a full team of 7 Juniors and 2 returning Sophomores. Coincidentally the three captains for next years team, Jon Groth, Steve Bridges, and Doug Wheatcraft, all made second team all C.V.C. for the 1979 season. Doug Wheatcraft takes a big cut in the baseline. (Top to Bottom)-Matt Bistntz digs a low throw out of the dirt against Orange Kevin Parker slides safely into second at West Geauga. A smiling fon Groth is congratulated by Coach Lenny May after a home run against Orange. The 1979 Tennis team had a good sea- son as well as great depth. Seniors, Ju- niors and Sophomores made up the team, so there will be plenty of winning again this season when Juniors and Sopho- mores return. First, second and third singles were played by Chip Wiper Jim Meyers and Jack Campbell respectively. First doubles were pursued by Peter Herr and Todd Larsen while Juniors Kent Campbell and Kevin Ryan handled second doubles. Chip Wiper was the only player to make it to districts with an overall record of 15-5 and was voted the most valuable player. junior soccer player Todd Larsen is also devastating on the tennis court. Last spring Todd played 1st doubles with Peter Herr. Making sure his arm is straight. Junior. Kevin Ryan hits one over the net while partner Kent Campbell anxiously awaits his turn. G U Y S TENNIS 59 s GIRLS -N- GUYS TRACK The Varsity track team consisted of many fine athletes, who gave their all in every race. Ending up with a 7-2 record, they also placed 5th out of 15 in the Solon Re- lays, and third in the C.V.C. meet. Dave Revelle went to State in the 440 yard dash, in which he placed 4th. Un- fortunately many Seniors graduated, but the underclass- men remaining should do a fine job this year. The Freshmen track team once again held up the tradi- tion of having a poor league record, 1-7. Even though the points didn't pile up at the meets, many of these boys showed great potential for the years ahead. Both teams were coached by John Hurst, Jack Stanton, Dave Quisenberry, and Pete Olah. In between the mudfights and stealing mascots, the girl's track team scored many victories, ending up with a 5-2 record in the league. The team consisted of mostly underclassmen, so many of them will be back for an out- standing 1980 season. The girls also sent Lee Meyer to Columbus in the 100 m. hurdles where she placed fifth. Coach Dave Hart anticipates another great season. The look on Lee Meyer’s face expresses the impor tance of the meet. Ed Marchitto runs the last mile of his race ago- nizingly. Mark Peucht clears the hurdle with a little extra balancing help from his tongue Leslie Cilbert and Page Hanson, with invisible wings on their shoes, defy the law of gravity in a relay at Solon. Gregg Haniford had found that when trying to balance on a narrow rail, this is the best technique Dave Revelle pulls ahead of his opponent in the mile relay. Jeanme Villo runs with a unique look of concen- tration on her face. 61 GIRLS - TENNIS Lisa Bortz. 2nd singles player, shows the form it takes to end up with a 17-5 personal record. With five returning lettermen, girl's varsity Tennis team won a hard fight for the CVC ti- tle. Easy victories from Kenston 5-0, Chardon 5-0, and Twinsburg 5-0, got everyone psyched for the Orange match which was also won, 4- 1. The only CVC loss came against Aurora, a 2- 3 match. Finishing off league action were So- lon 4-1, and West G., 3-2. The girls clinched the CVC title at the league match in which Lisa Bortz, 2nd singles, and Ann and Robin Scott, 2nd doubles placed second. Sue Wise, 1st singles, Patty Kravitz, 3rd singles, and Val and Sue Pike, 1st doubles, all placed first. The closeness of the team was definitely a factor in their 17-5 overall record. The JV team ended with a 5-5 record in which players like Jennie Mills, Lisa Bolster, Paula Gallimore and Sue Anderson all played key parts. The appearance of underclassmen such as Karen Scott, Nancy Powell, Lisa How- ard, Kelli Wall and Meg Doman will add strength to next years team. O o X co Sue Wise, or Shue, concentrates on taking all CVC singles, and she did fust that. 62 VARSITY GIRLS’ TENNIS: Front (I. to r.) Robin Scott, Susan Pike, Valerie Pike, Sue Wise, Lisa Bortz. Suzie Pike hides her smile here be- fore winning the 1st doubles crown. After last year's disappointing football season many Chagrin football fans were skeptical about this season. But to the skeptics dismay, the Tigers were better both in the number of wins and in team moral. The season opened on a winning note against Tallmadge, 14-0. But two straight losses to Benedictine 35-0 and Kenston 30-14, started the pessimists saying, here we go again . A spectacular 69 yard scoring play with less than two minutes play in the Homecoming game against Twinsburg brightened the Tiger's fans outlook on things. The Homecoming victory started a three game winning streak as Chagrin rolled over Aurora and Chardon. The Tigers went into the West Geauga game 2, overall and 2-1 in the C.V.C. It was a hard-hitting game which proved to be the beginning of the downfall of Chagrin. They lost their last three and finished with a 4-5 record overall. 1 | VARSITY The Tiger's weren't forgotten in the honors department, as Tim Richey earned a spot on the first team all C.V.C. Pete Prentner, Craig Schroeder, Lenny Cosentino, and Jon Groth all gained second team honors. Many un- derclassmen gained valuable experience that hopefully will help the Tiger squad of 1980 improve as much as the 1979 team did this season. miti Quarterback Jon Groth comes to the sideline for guidance from Coach Piai during a time out. 1979 CHAGRIN FALLS HIGH SCHOOL TIGERS VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM: Front Rou• (I. to r.): lake Adams. Mike Wise chases the Kenston quarterback while fighting off an offensive lineman. Kevin Parker on one of his rare runs, gets good yardage against West Geauga. This year the J.V. team improved over last year's record 100%, ending with 6 wins and 3 losses. The best attribute of this team was the close cooperation between the sopho- mores and juniors. They also never gave an inch or gave in to the other team when it wasn't earned right- fully. They lost the championship game to Solon 6-7. Twice the de- fense held the opponents on the 1 yard line. They finished with a record of 5-2, and lost their last game of the season to a tough but not unbeatable team. This class is full of excellent football players, and the team was led by Brett Rudolph, Tim Vince, Tony Miralia, and Bill Por- ter. Not only did these boys help, but teamwork had a considerable amount to do with their successful season. The J.V. team next year should be one of the strongest Chagrin has seen in a long time. Matt Chinchar gives the players a little bit more confidence with his sideline talk 67 This was a very successful year for the Varsity soccer team. With a record of 9-3-4, the guys took the C.V.C. Crown. In addition to that, the team placed 6 members on the league all-star team. 1st team mem- bers were Ehrhart Langer, John Cressman, and Kevin Ryan. On the 2nd team was Pat Porter, Mike Worstell, and Rob Weber. The team ended their season on a disappoint- ing note as they were upset by Can- ton Glenn-Oak, preceeded by a thrilling victory over the highly ranked Hudson team. Coacn Gerhardt felt that among all the team members, Charles Lang was the most improved player, Ehrhart Langer the best defensive man, Kevin Ryan the toughest on offense, and John Cressman was the most valuable player. The greatest barrier seemed to be the Chardon Hilltoppers, who beat Chagrin's Varsity, J.V., and girl's team. The varsity had a league record of 4-2, placed 3rd in the Cha- grin Invitational, and 4th in the sectionals and the Wooster meet. Ju- nior Ed Marchitto and Senior Doug Phillips were the top runners for the season, but it was Jim Syme who went on to qualify in the districts this year. The J.V. team finished with a record of 1-1, placed 2nd at the Wadsworth meet, and were the un- official champs at Wooster and at sectionals. Sara Linn and Joanna Streeter led the girls in their season, and for the majority of them the girls ran better in the invitational meets, placing 5th at sectionals. Two of this, years top runners. This loss ended the Girl's Basketball winning streak at 59 con- secutive regular season games. The Tigers were a blend of youth and experience. The leaders were senior co-captains Sue Wise and Lisa Bortz. Junior Robin Muller, sophomore Patty Kravitz and freshman Jane Phend were the other starters. The team averaged 58 points a game while holding their opponents to an average of 33. Sue Wise was the leading scorer and rebounder, Patty Kravitz was the leader in steals and Jane Phend the leader in assists. The 1979-80 Basketball season was one of ups and downs for the Tigers. They started off winning their first nine games, surprising all of the pre-sea- son predictors. A close lose to Orange was the first in a line of losses for Chagrin. Two losses at the buzzer to Kenston and West Geauga gave the Tigers three league losses going into the final regular sea- son game against Solon. The game matched identi- cal 10-3 records and would determine the C.V.C. championship. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead and led 24 to 14 at the half. But a spirited comeback by the Comets prevented Chagrin from capturing their third C.V.C. title in a row. It was a heart breaking loss for the Tigers, who held first place for the en- tire season until the final game. The team was composed of seven seniors and four juniors. Senior co-captains Tim Clegg and Jon Groth, Seniors Mike Wise, Matt Bistritz, Tim Richey and Steve Stanek started most of the year. Senior Gregg Haniford and Juniors Bill Dooley, Kevin Parker, Steve Alpeter and Tim Mahoney saw limit- ed action. Their suc- cess reflected the winning atti- tude in Chagrin Falls Basketball. U nJ X co O cc uu 80 J.V. BASKETBALL The J. V. basketball team enjoyed its third consecutive season of unprecedented success. They continued the win- nine streak they had started in eighth grade until the second West Geauga game in which they lost a hard fought battle 63-58. The team kept their coach from last year as Dave Quisenberry moved up from freshman coach to coach the J. V.'s. Mike Bistritz, Bill Morgan, Don Shanklin, Steve Deidrich, Chip Zachem, Jim Solether and new-comer Cliff Carter were all contributors in the JV's games But the success of the team depended much on the practice team which had Dale Wyville, Mike Durbin, Kevin Stanek, Chris Viland, Randy Rutkai, Mike Kramer and Scott Davis. Although these guys saw limited action in the games, their hustle and intensity in practice greatly contributed to team's success. Mike Bistntz puts the moves on a Beachwood opponent. The Tiger gymnasts took first place at the Chagrin Invitational meet, second in the league, sec- ond in the CVC meet, and first at the sectional meet at West Geauga. Seniors Lisa Pfieffer, Karen Bowe, Leslie Gilbert, Carol Bartley, and Lee Meyer provided a strong backbone for many talented underclass- men. The 1979-1980 Chagrin Wrestling team is an extremely young but talented group. Eleven sophomores, and one Freshman have wrestled in varsity positions at one time or another and many are regulars. Some of these under- classmen are Charlie Heilman, Nick Trudick, Pat McEvoy, Paul Iafelice, Greg Dunbar, Jim Alestri, Pat Clawson, Eric Feucht, Jim Jenson, Charle Prentner, John Updyke and Mark Masters. The team has been plagued by injuries, especially to the upperclassmen. Some of our more outstanding wres- tlers have been out of action for a good deal of the sea- son. Lenny Cosentino, Pete Prentner, Mark Feucht, Steve Loy, Andy Banks, Brian Davis, Don Brown and Matt Rowe have all missed matches during the season. Only Rick Weber has remained relatively healthy and consis- tent all year. The prospects for the coming year are promising with strong wrestlers coming from the Freshman and JV teams to join the young varsity. This year's JV wrestling team started off the season in fine style by beating some strong teams like Bedford, Beachwood, and Newbury. As the season progressed, in- juries to the varsity depleted the JV ranks, causing many weight classes to be forfeited to our opponents. In addition to dual meets, the team participated in two tournaments. The first was at Richmond Heights in De- cember and the second at Kenston in February. Out- standing team members were Pat Clawson, Doug Green, Kevin O'Donnell, Doug Black, Jim Alestri, Eric Feucht, Nick Trudick, and Paul Iafelice. Not only was the action on the field, but off as well. Here the opposing cheerleaders have their own showdown. 108 SENIORS 2-0 On October 14, after weeks of practice, the Senior women and the Junior girls met head on in the annual Junior Senior football game. First quarter action began when the Senior offense quickly scored with the dreaded Statue of Liberty play. Then after a devastating round with the defense, the Juniors retreated to the sidelines. After a fine blocking wall, and a 99 yard run by Lee Meyer, the women found themselves on top, 12-0. Robin Muller never gave up for the Juniors, however, and in the second half she broke away on two bootlegs to narrow the final margin to 18-14, the Seniors being victorious for 2 years in a row. 109 THE MAN WHO Above: Pete Murphy, portraying the feeble minded doctor.
