ZENITH 1978 Chagrin Falls High School 400 East Washington Street Chagrin Falls, Ohio 44202 Volume 68 Foreigner (for en er)-person from another country. AFS is the club holds the most potluck dinners and puts on the yearly Christmas Formal. “Twas The Night Before Christmas was the theme of this year’s Christmas Formal and the AFS’ers were busy creating a holiday atmosphere. Other activities included the two AFS exchange students who came into our school this year were Ann DeRidder from Belgium and Martin Hansson. They brought a new light on things with their country’s influences and fit in well with the pace of things here. 2 ABOVE: Bente Chritianson smiles at one of Mr. Stantons jokes. One of the earliest archers, Cupid, the Roman God of Love, was kept busy on the eve of Saturday, December 10, the day of this year’s winter formal. As couples entered the gym they were swept 14 days into the future to “The Night Before Christmas”. The AFS sponsors worked hard to decorate the gym according to the theme. To the music of “Archer”, couples danced, ate and just relaxed while Cupid partook in his little game. The end of the dance marked the end of an excellent evening for all. and the be- ginning of a very special Christmas season for many. BELOW: Jenny Evans. They are the ones who keep students in line. The guidence councilors are the three people who try to help us with the things that sometimes make high school painful and unbearable. They help with the scheduling of the under-classmen. And college preparation for the Seniors. They help solve many of the students’ Everyday problems, and are very important assets to the CFHS staff. BASEBALL (bas'bawl)-the National field game of the United States. The Baseball Team had an exceptionally ex- citing season this year. Possessing terrific pitch- ers and powerful hitters, the Tigers went to Sectionals and clobbered Beachwood, 8-4, but fell to Benedictine 8-6 in the finals. In the CVC, the season highlighted when the team edged Aurora 2-1 and blasted the Kenston Bombers 12-3. This year’s top hitters were Bob Bistritz, Rob Pfeiffer. Mark Horan and Paul Gamble. M Basketball preparation (prcp'a-ra'shtin) the act or process of prepar- ing for the future. Gaining experience for varsity action, the JV Basketball team displayed pride and determination throughout the season. The players, coached by Mr. Gardner, had a very successful season with 13 victories and only 5 losses. One great victory was over the Solon JV’s, their first loss in 3 years. In the first half of the season the B-Ball team struggled with a 3-4 league record. At the last half of the season the JV Tigers showed their strength with a 6-1 record. Many JV players have great potential and are look- ing foreward to a fantastic varsity team. Armed with many returning lettermen including Bob Bistritz, Rob Pearce and center Jim Clegg, the varsity team had every reason to expect an exciting and successful year. With the support of many enthusiastic fans, the team tied for the league cham- pionship and went on to clinch the sectional division champ- ionship. The Commons Activity Board, better known as CAB, worked hard this year to make money for the improvement of the Commons. Headed by chairperson Wendy Kocpf, and faculty advisor Dale Richmond, CAB sponsored two dances, numerous bake sales, and a better-than-ever “cabinet” breakfast line. The money earned, along with a lot of muscle power, made it possible to create the artistic mural in the men’s commons john, and to buy benches for both johns, a bulletin board, and part of the new “music-bell system”. 19 ENDURANCE (en durence)-the power to withstand hardship or stress. The 1977 Men's Cross Country Team experiences a victorious season with a total of seventy wins against fifty-five losses. Leading the team were Gregg Greenough (captain), Jeff Baker, Peter Garrett, Jon McKenna, and Kirk Lundstrom. Coach John Hurst, Coach Dave Quesinberry and statistician Ann Bruner encouraged and supported their team throughout the season. The dance team performed at all football games and added a bit of color to the half-time shows. The head of the team was junior Barb Rentz. Advisor Mrs. Carol Roeder helped the dance team put together their routines using moves they learned at a summer camp. Toward the end of football season, the dance team organized a new routine using all female members of the band! 25 DEBATE (di batVA Formal contest in which two opposing teams defend and attack a given proposition. The CFHS 1977-78 Debate Team was a pleasant surprise. Con- sisting of, mostly underclassmen, the team progressed well through the year, gaining expertise and experience with every tournament. After a slow start, the Debate Team gained momentum and quali- fied for the State Tournament’s in Cincinnati, for the fifth straight year. They qualified for this meet with an exciting victory over Beachwood and University School, in a run-off round at the Dis- trict Tournaments in Euclid. Returning, next year will be JoAnn Schultz and Betsy Dillinger, both of whom were state qualifiers. 26 ENGLISH ('i nglish, -lesh) The language of the people of England and U.S. and most of the British Colonies and Dominions. 2. American Literature, Drama, Speech, Semantics, Composition and Grammar. This years English department stayed relatively the same as the past few years. The only new ad- dition was Mr. Pepper who also teaches French, and Mr. Mlinek our student teacher. Both were involved with the Drama classes and added a new dimension to the fall play. The 1977 football season was a learning experience for the freshmen tigers. Even though the team won only one game, they possess a high potential for forthcoming football seasons. The primary goals of coaches McWhorter and Morgon were to teach the frosh tigers basic football skills and to reinforce these skills by having all the boys participate. The J.V. team had a mediocre season with a record of 5-5. The highlight of the season was the big 30-0 over Trinity. Leading scorers for the Junior Varsity were Mark Feucht with a total of 46 points and Mike Wise with a total of 19 points. Coached by Mr. Jack Stanton, the team agreed that this was a worthwhile experience and that they’ll be in for a great Varsity season next year. C.V.C.-Chagrin Valley Champions ... The 1977 Varsity Football team kept up the tradition of spectacular and exciting champion- ship seasons. To Chagrin fans, CVC took on a new meaning. Though the team lost their first two non-league games, they made a magnificent comeback by wiping out all other opponents for the rest of the season. With close wins over rival Kenston and Kent Roosevelt, the team left no fan unhappy. The season was climaxed with another spectacular Homecoming victory over West G. Tigers Bob Bistritz, Russ Gallimore Ed Gottschalk. Doug Hub- bard and Jim Porter, all made the Plain Dealer Dream Team. Bob Bistritz also received the honor of being the “most valuable play- er” in the CVC. Ron Bombeck, Tom Jicha, Jeff Hoopes and John Bartley also performed exceptionally well. In our language classes the past, present, and future are not merely grammar topics! Students learn about the past by study- ing the literature, history, and the culture of France, Germany, Spain and ancient Rome. They concentrate on the present through conversation current events, films, and visitors. Foreign language students anticipate the future by preparing for college, careers, foreign travel, or living abroad. , A 35 36 RIGHT: Karen Komlo and Mike Wise slip in a few French words, while Mr. Wheat- craft isn’t looking. Returning lettermen, Mark Herion, Tom Rechin, Wade Dougherty, and Jay Townsend, and new lettermen Wayne Peterson and Mark Doman, along with Ernie Powell and Gary Cum- mings made up the 1977 golf team. With fourth place in the league, they tied Aurora for second in the tourna- ment. The team moved onto districts where they placed fifteenth in a field of seventeen teams. Their overall record was nine wins and seven losses. Mark Herion, a four-year letterman, led the team in overall play. Each player, however, had an aspect of the game in which he excelled. The traditional Junior girls versus the Senior women football game showed the Senior women to be the team, by a score of 8-0. For weeks, each team worked vigorously to learn as much about the game as they could, with the assistance of their coaches. Janet Gregory scored the only touchdown of the game with a beautiful run in the second quarter. Katie Stone ran for the conversion to make the score 8-0. Janet scored another touchdown and Debbie Hyde scored one also but both were called back because of offsides penalties. This is Mr. Webster’s definition of a senior. If one were to ask a Senior at Chagrin to give his definition, it might sound like this: SENIOR-(sen’yer) adj.-l. a member of the big senior class “Family” 2. one who goes to parties, has parties, and goes to Rorida over Spring vacation 3. one who has earned the right to a senior release pass 4. One who makes his last year the best for himself and all his friends because he knows it goes by all too fast. The graduating class of 1978 is a very special group of people. As we entered the High School as Freshman, we prepared our- selves for the social and academic traumas about which our par- ents had warned us. But after those first few weeks of adjust- ment. we realized that High School isn’t something to be afraid of, but rather, the best years of our lives. Our social maturity was expanded during our first year, by the ideas of Dr. Earl Rcum during “Friends Day”. We learned to open up with each other and our class grew closer because of it. Our academic fears also proved to be unnecessary. The dreadful rumors of Algebra and Biology all proved to be harmless. Our Sophomore year introduced us to new responsibilities. We were able to develop new friendships by meeting in the commons after earning our commons priveleges. Our social lives were also expanded to the weekends as many of us received our driver’s li- cense. Everyone became close friends and some of the girls be- came a little crazy. It was a year of “feeling groovy”, yak calls, and great big “Valeo’s!” Our Junior year started with a bang as a junior girl’s football team was organized. The girls worked strenuously under the con- stant coaching of the junior guys. The coaches, players and cheer- leaders all worked together towards their common goal of beating those Seniors. Though the girls lost the game, the class ties that were formed will never be broken. As we prepared for our academic futures by taking the ACT and SAT tests during our Junior year, we realized that our High School years would soon end. At the close of our junior year we worked together to put on an unforgettable Prom for the grad- uating Senior with hopes that our own Senior Prom would not arrive too quickly. When our Senior year finally did arrive, most of us were in a state of disbelief. It was only yesterday that we were wandering aimlessly about the halls, schedules in hand as freshman. But now, finally, we were upperclassmen. Our superiority was first measur- ed as the senior women trampled the junior girls in the traditional football clash. The creation of the Senior men’s Kazoo Band also provided for even more class involvement. The Varsity Football Team, which was composed basically of Seniors, showed too their class strength by being undefeated in the league. Our Social activities soon took priority over all other activities. Seventh period became obsolete for the majority of Seniors who had Senior Release passes. We found less time for school work and more time for our extracurricular activities. Weekends became a very important part of our lives and parties were common events. As the winter snow melted as the cold winds subsided, the long awaited Senior Spring became apparent. And it wasn’t much later that scnioritis set in. We were all too preoccupied with the hopes of warmer weather to concentrate on anything academic. When Spring Vacation arrived, Chagrin was deserted. There was not a CFHS Senior to be seen for miles. Three-fourths of the Senior class had migrated to Rorida for Spring Vacation.” The tans soon faded though, and we were once again able to recognize each other. As graduation grew nearer some of us were excited others were sad. We laughed, talked and sometimes even cried. Promises were made to keep in touch between the various colleges and universities we would be attending. We reminded our- selves that even though we will all go separate ways, we have all left a part of ourselves with each other. “The happiness of today, will serve as memories for tomorrow.” KRISTIN! This year’s Zenith staff was plagued with troubles. The book came out late this year because of a lack of involvement. Once the book was finished, though, it was clear that the quality had not declined. The staff worked diligently for months. There were meetings every tuesday night at Ann Kelley’s to pull together the bits and pieces of pictures and copy. There were many enjoyable times and many sleepy- eyed people on Wednesday mornings.
