INVOLVEMENT The First Day On November 3, 1972, Dr. Earl Reum spoke to the students of CFHS at a man- datory assembly in the gymnasium. For a total of one hour and forty-five minutes. Dr. Reum laughed at his own jokes, performed magic tricks, and spoke to us of love, brotherhood and spiritual advancement. No one was bored; most were deeply affected by the “dumpy, dirty old man from Denver”, who was so sincere and so warm a human being he allowed us to share his vision. At the conclusion of his final speech. Dr. Reum received a spon- taneous standing ovation. The spirit of the day carried through- out. In small groups, we learned more about each other, cooperation, and problem solving. Peopleization gave us new perspectives on old questions. The greatest changes, though, were the little, less glaring ones. Some new friendships, a few secret tears, and lots of beaming faces which haven’t quite faded yet. No greater tribute can be given to Dr. Earl Reum and the organizers of The First Day. Students in the high school found new ways to share their interests and develop their talents. Numerous mini- assemblies by both students and outside groups brought laughs, admiration and cultural atmosphere. In addition to traditional events such as Career Day, the boys’ gym show, and student playlets, the choir viewed an operetta and a singing group, students performed concerts in the library, and individual classes viewed speakers ranging from a Yoga enthusiast to a politician. Inter Club Council Laying a foundation for future years oc- cupied meetings of the Inter Club Council. Procedures were devised to open channels between the students, the clubs, and the ad- ministration. Systems were created for the chartering of new clubs, the scheduling of ac- tivities and the synchronization of club meetings. Organization became the key word in the hope that in years to come the school could involve the greatest number of students with the least amount of conflict. Spurred by enthusiasm and slowed only by its own organizational problems, the I.C.C. has grown into an efficient- ly operating body. 22 INVOLVEMENT An offshoot from the Student Coun- cil, The Commons Activities Board had as its main goal, making the Commons an enjoyable place to go. As in the Stu- dent Council, relevancy was a key ques- tion and this enterprising group of students arrived at the ultimate answer. . .food. The institution of the breakfast FRONT ROW: L. Katz, S. Pearce INVOLVEMENT 23 line achieved its goal as more and more people tossed aside the pleasures of the library for a doughnut and a cup of hot chocolate. Commons Activity Board Student Council The Student Council worked hard and long to organize itself into a func- tional body with two main goals: stu- dent involvement and relevency. Coun- cil scored a major success in The First Day. Student involvement? (Everyone had to attend.) Relevancy? (Who can’t relate to a day with no classes?) Engel Future Teachers Of America Students who see themselves some- day returning to school (as instructors) make up the rolls of the F.T.A. Here, before leaving High School, they learn the glamorous aspects of a teaching career: grading spelling, checking addi- tion, and reviewing lesson plans. Ignor- ing these drudgeries, F.T.A. members claim a sincere feeling of personal reward when they realize that due to their efforts someone has learned. INVOLVEMENT 25 FRONT ROW: A. Latin Club As far as anyone knows, the Latin Club does not concern itself with languages at all. Instead, in their rather short meetings, the club schedules bake sales to earn money and plans banquets to spend it. Despite the endlessness of this cycle, the members all seem con- tent, except the vice-president, who just never seems to make the meetings. INVOLVEMENT 27 Prism Postponed meetings, confusing maps, and a lack of attendance hampered the Prism staff this year. And as usual, a lacok of good material was the over-riding problem. With many contributions from the staff members, Sue’s help in para-phrasing at the meetings, and the constant help of advisor(s) the Prism staff managed once again to create a literary masterpiece. Trying to put out a readable newspaper every two weeks can be a real challenge, when you con- sider editorial meetings, deadline meetings and the endless paste-ups. Pictures that look fine at the meetings but print darkly in the paper, articles that are never turned in, and the ever present search for advertisers all serve to frustrate the staffers. The Lantern, under new leadership and staff, managed to meet these problems and presented the students with a newspaper of broad scope and interest. Zenith Zenith staff. Front ROW: B. Duff (Ass’t. Locating hundreds of pictures that somehow no one has seen, writing copy and trying to meet deadlines is what occupies the time of Zenith workers. When all the materials are together it is the job of the staff members to organize an in- telligible section from a few stray ideas and fifty seemingly unrelated pictures. But Zenith is more than hard work. It’s meetings till one o’clock, old Bogart movies, dinners at McDonalds, and trying to calm down Barb. Sometimes we wonder if we’re all kind of weird; how on earth can confusion, frustration, and mass hysteria actually be fun American Field Service Known for its slide shows, cancelled dances, and potluck dinners, the A.F.S. this year entertained three foreign students: Lin- da Angus of New Zealand, Hakan Han- burger from Sweden and Peter Vasilievic from Yugoslavia. Occasional problems did arise intermittantly, especially in the spelling of last names, the pronunciation of first names, and the largest problem of trying to convince someone that they sound Australian. 32 INVOLVEMENT AFS, FRONT ROW: B. Parks. 34 INVOLVEMENT Monday Night Gymnastics Monday Night Gymnastics has been a time when anyone may try their hand on the unevens, test their balance on the beam, or risk a nervous break- down on the vault. Mrs. Wilcox taught us the fundamentals of dance in group warm-up, and while we may never be the New York Civic Ballet or the United States Olympic Team, we laughed and had a good time! INVOLVEMENT 35 Girls Athletic Association In addition to running girls in- tramurals, the G.A.A. schedules many activities for girls in Chagrin. Among such events are bowling in winter, cam- pouts in the spring and canoe trips whenever possible. Photography Club The Photography Club is open to anyone who owns a camera or is otherwise interested in the art of taking pictures. Even with this lack of restrictions on membership the meetings are seldom crowded. Those who do join spend their time photographing anyone or anything they see. National Honor Society Ping Pong Although not known for their smashing victories, the Ping Pong players united to form their own club and challenged other schools to par- ticipate. Johnson Swim Club__ Favored once again with the Cleveland climate, the Ski Club could have ap- propriately changed its name to the Weather Watchers Club. This trusty band remained on call and jumped into action at the first sign of snow. One day the snow was falling, the air was brisk and the spirits of the skiiers soared. Then to the astonishment of all, the P.A. barked “Due to poor conditions there will be no skiing. . . .” INVOLVEMENT 43 Between the great Bonfire, staining the gazebo and other fun activities like eating with the Kiwanis and saying the pledge of allegiance the Key Club sure stays busy. Even when Ogden was late Mr. Fram was always there to liven things up. With all the meetings and ac- tivities, the Key Club could not have possibly known about the pumpkin roll. LEFT. KEY CLUB. Rickleman. % 44 INVOLVEMENT Hockey Hockey has never been called a gentleman’s sport; it is rugged, brutal and punishing. For these reasons, a group of not so dainty Chagrinites formed a Hockey Club. Despite an uneventful season (only one concussion), it looks as if the popular winter sport is here to stay. INVOLVEMENT 45 Competitive Spirit Spirit has long been a valued characteristic of school life and Chagrin holds a large amount of this quality. Enthusiasm peaks at every sporting event and attendence grows constantly. Spurred by a Cheerleading squad that placed third in the State Cheering Contest, Chagrin keeps its spirit in vic- tory and defeat creating a unity that connects all factions of the school with a common bond. 46 INVOLVEMENT Girls’ Football Homecoming Beating Orange and then watching it three more times on TV certainly helped the atmosphere on the homecoming weekend, but it is the small things that make memories. A surprised Julie McDermott, with a crown that just wouldn’t stay on, the appearance of a camera man at all the wrong moments, and on Saturday the excellent music of Amblesides made Homecoming ’72. INVOLVEMENT 49 INVOLVEMENT 51 Day old flowers and rushed preparations marked the Christmas For- mal, the first school dance ever held on a Sunday. In spite of the snow and cold, Ambelsides once again performed for a full crowd. A.F.S. worked tirelessly, making murals, attaching stars and set- ting lighting to create an atmosphere that perfectly mirrored the feelings of the evening. The event climaxed with the crowning of a never-dancing king and an ever-blushing queen. INVOLVEMENT 55 I guess this is just about the greatest, most wonderful town a guy could grow up in! It’s got all other towns beat by a mile! Y’mean there are other towns?!? OFfaoLCORN A big city is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there! I’ll say! Here—I don’t want to do either?! TOUM HA What did you and Harold do on Saturday night? guess there is something special about Prom Night! Well, first we watched them put up the Store Closed sign at the A P. Then we watched three shaves at Zebb's Barber Shop. Then we counted the sidewalk cracks all the way to the end of Main Street. And then we took turns setting the air pressure indicator at Sunoco Service Station until dawn broke! You say you have no racial problems in this town? None whatsoever! Wonderful! How many Negroes live in this town? Why, Presbyterian Episcopalian and Methodist, of course! None whatsoever! Really? What Three Great Western Religions? COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Students from the high school have taken an active role in local productions of performing and fine arts. Some take classes at the Valley Art Center and par- ticipate in art shows there, while other students have participated in Chagrin Valley Little Theater’s shows by acting, ushering, crewing and serving refreshments. The Fairmount Art Center, as well as various youth groups, has also involved Chagrin students with the arts. And, of course, the annual stu- dent art show and the Yuletide presen- tation of the Messiah have involved more students than ever. Cultural Activities Religious Groups Becoming an active part of one’s religion required much more than just church on Sunday. Area youth groups have sponsored retreats, hosted such in- dividuals as a speaker on Indian rights, and in one case performed a miracle play. Nichiren Shoshu, a growing belief in Chagrin, has increasingly involved its members and can boast of its own rock group, The Ohio Morning Sun. The 18-year-old vote marked an awakening interest in politics for many CFHS students. For the first time in history we had seniors voting in the presidential election, and most were anxious to be well informed. Through Ms. Kayser’s Government class students were able to hear Sen. McGovern speak at Cleveland State, and band members and other students went to Aurora to greet President Nixon’s motorcade. Also sponsored by the Government classes was a presidential debate with Coun- cilman Jon Salermo representing Nixon and local Democrat Doug Smith debating for McGovern. Other students formed and expressed their political opinions outside of class, and a few were active campaign workers. 60 COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Learning Through Politics I COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT 61 62 COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT The Townie Scene Today’s Townie is a Big Man on Campus-minus the campus. In an era when greasers are past and hippies are passe, the townie has emerged as a strong social force. Younger townies form the gazebo set and count Falls Theatre as major entertainment, while their older cohorts frequent the Baskin strip and occasionally spin on over to Spinner’s. Defense held the opposition to 17 points, lowest in the Cleveland area, while Offense had the highest point output in the C.V.C. Eight players were named to the all- conference team. Preparations for the games were highlighted by Coach Maher’s gasser drills, bear crawls, and up-downs. Griffiths. 74 COMPETITION Three away games weren’t bad for starters but the big surprise w'as the arrival of Solon’s Varsity Team; in J.V. uniforms! Mr. Piai’9 challenge to our manhood came on a closely following Monday, but the biggest rivalry in the C.V.C. turned out to be our offense against our defense. Becker’s beauty sleep did not seem to hurt the team in the Chardon game, but it would have helped if Tom had remembered his shoes. This years record was good but if the team could only move the ball the way Atkinson’s moves the bull, we would be un- beatable. J.V. COMPETITION 75 Cross Country Cross Country had a tough season and it meant a lot of training and hard work. The season had its surprises, too, like Sam Narten’s performance at Mayfield. (He lost.) Soccer team has the proud dis- tinction of being the only team in the league who plays on the varsity football parking lot. It was nice to finally have some fans. The cheerleaders controlled Varsity Soccer our win-loss record. If they put homemade cookies in our lockers we lost, brownies, we tied and storebought candy we won! Right Here! COMPETITION 95 Intramurals 96 COMPETITION Dressed in sloppy sweatshirts, baggy sweatpants, and flappy sneakers, the Girls Cross Country Team members often look less than feminine. They can be seen running through the streets of Chagrin on brisk wintry days with only their hair as a testimony to their womanhood, and their clownlike outfits drawing the attention of motorists. When the season is over, and the girls discard their sweatsuits for normal clothes, they are no longer comic figures and each is proof that running really does keep you in shape. McCowan COMPETITION 99 w; m Gymnastics Team In its first year of competition, the Girl’s Gymnastic Team became the C.V.C. champs, and won the Chagrin Invitational, defeating eight schools by a large margin. Originating new activities creates an excellent sponsor - member relationship for as the Coaches will ad- mit, they often knew less than the students. lOO COMPETITION Majorettes And Flagtwirlers When you’re wearing a “pumpkin suit” and everyone calls you “Clowns,” it is harder to smile and stay together, especially if the routine was thought up just a few hours before. And Sworan never did seem to know which routine we were supposed to be doing. Then there were problems with dropping batons, lost pom-poms and trying to make Stern serious. It’s a challenge to put together a routine good enough to perform in front of a thousand or so peo- ple; and the reject songs we get to twirl to don’t help much. It really is fun and exciting, though. At the very least, it's a free game every week. COMPETITION 105 LEARNING LEARNING 109 Administration This year’s chief administrators, Mr. Gadosh and Mr. Richmond, deserve a tremendous amount of credit for the ad- vancements that have been made in the school. Radically, new methods of in- struction and such ideas as “The First Day” must be credited to these two educators. Every attempt has been made to involve the students in the school and to make the administration a sounding block for the student ideas. The effect has been a whole new at- mosphere at the school with many of the old tensions removed. We, the students, can only thank these two fine educators. Science Whether filling the halls with smoke, making ripples in a little tank of water, or going on a “nature walk” the science department proved itself to be in full operation this year. These signs demonstrated that although no new courses were added this year the biology, chemistry and physics classes are con- stantly making advancements on today’s technology. 112 LEARNING History Department Like the English Department, history courses this year took on a new format. The students were given the option to study specific areas of interest ranging from education in the United States to Humanities. Field trips, such as the trip to see McGovern, headed by Mrs. Kaiser’s government classes add to student in- terest . LEARNING 113 English Department With courses in everything from Science fiction to Humanities, the English department, for the first time, gives the student a choice of topics. So instead of a year of Faulkner and Hemingway, it is now possible to take four or more nine week courses in an area of personal interest. This quest for student involvement has taken a lot of the drudgery out of the requirement of four years of English. 114 LEARNING Foreign Language Department Dancing the Polka in the German classes, playing Monoply in foreign languages and individualized studies have always been favorites of language students, but this year the department went one step further. Mr. Gerhardt’s students may still enjoy their “spieltags” but in the French and Spanish classes it is now possible to complete two years of study in one year by completing the adequate number of “laps.” Each student may now work at his own speed and make foreign languages studies enjoyable. Mrs. Daubert. 2ND ROW: Mrs. Klingensmith, Mr. Pepper, Mrs. Colignon, Mr. Gerhardt. 116 LE ARMING Home-Ec Home Ec has its routine like any other class; critiques, quizzes, and grades are all common. Sewing a project or cooking a new recipe can be sur- prisingly demanding, however (and so, unfortunately, can Miss Morris). Sometimes the only people brave enough to eat what we cook are the teachers with an uncanny ability to sniff their way into the classroom. Shop Shop is not a course to get an easy ‘A’; it’s a place to learn a real skill. First year students make useful objects like cut- ting boards and jewelry boxes, while the more advanced student works more in- dependently and even works on such way-out projects as a log-splitter. An if class ever threatens to become dull, Mr. Fry always livens it up with a joke of his own style. LEARNING 121 The O.W.E. D.C.T. program offers on the job experience to all those seeking business careers. Led by an instructor who appears more a friend than a teacher, the course supplies training that provides skills immediately applicable in the business world. 122 LEARNING The choir rates as one of a kind. Where else can you find a director with a whistle, a bass in the tenor section, and an alto who thinks she's a soloist? Waiting for buses bothers everyone, but what other group gets excused absences four days in one week!? Despite privileges and peculiarities, the choir is always busy and in general confusion. For although the choir can sing like angels it has been said that they can’t ot lilp thorn Band Band supplies an outlet for those with talent but it also offers constant humiliation. Rain on every football night, penguin suits at concerts, squeaky clarinet solos and playing se- cond fiddle to the choir all stood in the way of the band’s reputation. However, under the direction of Doc Nickel and with inspiration from the midget bass drummer the Band managed to receive a standing ovation.once. 126 LEARNING 128 LEARNING LEARNING 129 Study Resources Finding a quiet place to study can be a challenge at C.F.H.S. A chat in the commons, for example, might be in- terrupted by a sophomore coke fight. The library, of course, is more restful, although the usual friendly bantering between librarians and students has been known to erupt into more vocal confrontations. Still, the library is always a good bet ... as long as you don’t get caught doing homework there.
