Who can 1 call at 11:30 p.m. to see if they can remember who they were standing next to in the FTA picture? Homework that is waiting at home. Why can't Brye take pictures of Soccer, Leaders, GAA, and German club all on Wednesday--after all, he knows the deadline is Thursday! Oh no, I omitted an entire line of ”£$% @id's! How much did we make, Dave? Think of ideas for the next issue! Editor J. B. Student Life 24 You know, it's really cool to sit around and cut down all the poetry. Notice how all the boys grab the chairs and leave the floor to the girls. One thing about Prism - it's different. We read and rate everything A , B , or forget it . Comments like: I like it because I know what love is like or It stinks. But how do we know if the foreign language poems are good or not? PRISM FRONT ROW: L. King, D. Suarez, K. Kachele, A. Student Life 26 How do you talk about a crazy mixed-up club like the AFS club? We tell all the adults our purpose is to make money, which is a laugh because the real goal is to have parties-the money's a side line. Not that we didn't clean up on the cider. Who would've be- lieved there were that many apples in the world, let alone Chagrin? There's other things we could try to tell about: looking at the naughty pictures from Europe, working at the AFS adult chapter dance (and watching Mr. Ginatos dance like the next Fred Astaire), wondering why our membership triples on Zenith picture day, or what to do about the lack of money in our treasury. Is there any other group that has this kind of fun? Heidi and Melanie 27 Student I ife FRONT ROW: P. Poole, B. Roeder (Sec. ), D. Thompson (Pres. ), K. Bivens, (V. P. ), G. Braknis, 2nd ROW: P. Tea for our new members ... The intellectual (?) mob.. .Just think - a brain trust... We're honor- able, all right! NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Student Life 28 Being in FTA teaches you the other side of teach- ing: grading papers, putting up bulletin boards, taking down bulletin boards, making friends with the kids, being called Miss_____. ... The kids? How many kids do you have?... Who's mother are you? But no one told me we couldn't wear pants over there - Who wants to change outfits with me? It's work, but it's fun. Affir- mative: We discuss dry topics, re- search subjects (or at least fake it), and dress up for the matches. Nega- tive: President Kopenhefer, people stomping out in a huff, and a turn to drama with the addition of Tom. Conclusion: Debate is far from being serious. The loyal band marches forth to do battle with their worthy opponent, each lowly pawn bravely holding ground... Welcome to Chess Club. We love the game, but we have a problem- Won't someone join so we can have an opponent?? FRONT ROW: Mr. Balk (Advisor), T. Pickford, R. Oleweiler, 2nd ROW: J. LeBarron, L. Gun- ter. 3rd ROW: D. COACH Sports lllustrated 96 paiBjjsniii sjjods Z6 It's so very easy to think of the yearbook as the student book . Everyone tries to find their picture, look at the clubs they're in, and re view the triumphs (and tragedies) in the sport section. But a yearbook is a picture of the entire high school, and what is the high school without the adults who staff it? Remember how we used to think of the principal as a god, held in awe, and may- be a little feared? And how teachers always knew the answers? We didn't think about the School Board - we didn't know about it. We're older now, and our point of view has changed (for one thing, many of us are taller than the teachers). How do we see them now? ADMINISTRATION SCHOOL BOARD: Mrs. Wag- goner, Mr. Burns, Mr. Cox, Mr. Martt. SUPERINTENDENT: Dr. Thomas. ASS’T. Academics 100 PRINCIPAL: Mr. Gaydosh, ASS'T. PRINCIPAL: Mr. Roby SECRETARIES: Mrs. Crawford, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Kagy. SUPERINTENDENT: Mr. Cornelius. First of all, the administration has become real to us. We go to School Board meetings and talk to Mr. Gaydosh in the halls. The secretaries listen while we explain why we have to leave school for a little (?) while - sometimes they even let us go! And after four years we suddenly realize how im- portant they are to us! 101 Academics Teacher, n. 1) one who imparts knowledge or skill. That's what it says in the dictionary. But any teacher is far more than that. We've studied under, worked with, and learned from teachers since kindergar- ten. We no longer see them as all- knowing, but as real humans-like us. Teachers can crack jokes, get behind in their work, feel frustra- ted--they even have days when they can't wait for school to end! ENGLISH ENGLISH: Miss Nemeth, Mr. Balk, Mr. May, Mrs. Nelson, Mr. Loesch, Mrs. Davis, Miss Suite, Mrs. Jenkins Mr. Martin. Academics 102 LANGUAGE: Mrs. Klingensmith, Mrs. Colignon, Mr. Gerhardt, Mrs. Degner, Mrs. Daubert, Mrs. Hanson. LANGUAGE Teachers are part of our life now. They stop us in the halls to ask us why we're late, they assign homework, they give tests. But those are only the side effects of their job. They're around to help us learn, and not only about their particular subject. TTiat's what makes teaching such a hard job. It's a delicate combination of the tedious and the gratifying, the trivial and the important. inVAraHpmirs Any teacher could talk for hours about the bothersome details of being a teacher. There's the meetings you have to attend which really don't accomplish much, the hundreds of forms to fill out, deciding which student will get what grade, or making a fair test. MATH Academics 104 SCIENCE Or they could tell about the frustrations of trying to plan a creative lesson, when 1) the students just don't feel like participating, or 2) there's no money to buy the necessary materials. There is always the headache of planning a quiz, only to find out that the period will be shortened. And how can you describe the feeling of exhaustion after a demanding day. Being a teacher is hard work. SCIENCE: Mr. Hurst, Mr. Mallick, Mr. Wheatcraft, Mr. Hensel, Mr. Battles. 105 Academics SOCIAL STUDIES: Mr. Ginatos, Mr. Lerch, Mr. Dean, Mr. Richmond, Mr, Piai, Mr. Moxley. SOCIAL STUDIES Whoever says that an unscheduled period is a free period doesn't know what he's talking about. There are always papers to grade, lessons to plan, conferences.. .this is no 9-to-5 job. How can it be, with meetings before school, meetings after school, independent study meetings--the list seems endless. Eternal though it may seem, however, there is a purpose for these gatherings. The goal is to become a better teacher. We think. - Academi« 06 ART: Mrs. Tucek, Mrs. Weber BAND: Mr. Zimmer THE ARTS Certainly, any teacher will agree that their job is a challenge. Just how do you convince a bored student that learning can be creative and exciting? Where do you find the magic key to turn kids on to learning? It has to come from within the teacher, and that can be real work. CHOIR: Mrs. Macknin 107 Ararlp mirc PHYS. ED.: FRONT ROW: Mrs. Shirley, Mrs. Wilcox, Coach Quesinberry. 2nd ROW: Mr. Wem, Mr. Maher. There has to be something else, something more, and there is. It's a quality of caring, of wanting to help, no matter how hard that may be. It’s something you have to have a lot of to last in this profession. After four years here, you know--our teachers care. Making thank-you's sound as sincere as they are is not easily done. The Zenith Staff began this year as a rather disorganized and confused group. (Who can say we're confused and dis- organized now?) With a lot of time, a few arguments, and hard work, fun, broken rulers, stupid questions, and lots of caramel corn and coke, we've assembled a yearbook. Needless to say, Zenith would have been nothing without the effort of the entire staff. Special thanks to Mr. Norman D. Fry, Mr. George R. Kaschak, and Mrs. Vivian Crawford. They were always there when we needed them. We're indebted to Anne Platek, who designed the cover and division pages, and to Lisa King, who did several to the advertisements. As for our photographers, Brye Davis and Jim Squire ... we could never thank you enough. We would also like to thank Rick Me Peak for his many services as a photographer. We d like to express our appreciation to our American Yearbook Company representative, Mr. Len Wolowiec, who has been an indispensible help to us constantly. A few other people tolerated our many frustrations, tantrums, the secrecy, not to mention the clutter left in the wake of the meetings... Mr. and Mrs. Lazio and the Dr. Tom D. Rose fam- ily deserve more than thanks. What more can we say? Ad Editors, we could never have been more fortunate to work with such a fantastic group of people!
