The future is yours. That is what com- mencement speakers so often say, and, unfortunately, all that they usually truly mean is that you are young and that you are inheriting a generally prosperous society and a society which in America has offered more opportunities to more different kinds of people than any other society in history. Which is true, so far as it goes. I would add this, however: That the future is yours also in the sense that you will have an unprecedented chance to perfect the American dream-to right the wrongs, to redress the grievances which still exist, to improve greatly upon the rich heritage that is yours. And I would suggest that you make it a matter of commitment and career to use this op- portunity which will be yours. Do not defend the status quo. Rather, move on from appreciation of the oppor- tunities which have been afforded you to an action role in enlarging opportunities for those who will follow you. Carl B. Stokes Mayor of Cleveland Every decade gives us the chance to do things we could not do in the preceeding 10 years. The wisdom and energy with which we use these opportunities deter- mines the quality of the decade mea - sured against the perspective of history. The student moving on to a college or university in the 1970's will find that most institutions of higher learning will encourage him to concern himself with those things we call the 'Quality of Live' --life in the city, the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink, and our ability to live in peace in the neigh- borhoood, the city, the country and the world. But it is the student and not his college or university who ultimatley de- termines how history will view the dec - ade in terms of opportunities used and opportunities ignored. Robert W. Morse, President Case Western Reserve University With your help, the seventies can become the Decade of Solution-solutions to the problems of securing lasting peace; of providing opportunities for all Americans to develop their talents and skills; of building a sound economy in which all citizens will have equal opportunity to prosper; of saving our physical envir- onment from destruction by pollutants, and, of preserving and perfecting our system of justice and individual freedom under the Constitution. The challenge is there. I know you are more than equal to it. William E. Minshall, Congressman of the 23rd District The young men and women who are graduating from Chagrin Falls High School will assume positions of responsibility in our society within the next decade. Tremendous opportunities and obligations await you. Those in my generation can only hope that those who are now becoming part of the electorate for the first time will seek to build a society based on understanding and love rather than upon fear and hate. Stephen M. Young, United States Senator The challenge confronting our generation in the 70's is not to play any specific role, but to search for a meaningful role to play... Jim Horth, Senior Class President 7
