Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1970 volume:

A NEW DECADE PRESENTED BY THE 1970 SENIORS CHAGRIN FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHA GRIN FA LLS, OHIO 2 Dedication His teaching career began at Chagrin where he originated the wrestling program. The determination with which he had attacked his opponents in college was the same deter- mination that he expected from his wrestlers at Chagrin. Three years later, he had started a twenty-six match win- ning streak which earned for him a reputation as an out- standing coach... Four undefeated seasons in freshman football was an initial accomplishment as frosh football coach. He followed many of our senior boys through football, for he graduated to varsity coaching as our boys moved from the freshman to varsity squads... His patience and courage as our Drivers Ed Instructor made the ten m.p.h. driving lessons enjoyable. It was also during these lessons that many of us learned to appreciate his jokes and good country music... This fall, he returned to Bowling Green to pursue graduate studies. As the college's first and only all-American wrestler, he was honored with a position in Bowling Green's Hall of Fame... His friendliness and sense of humor are still remembered at Chagrin and it is now our turn to recognize the admirable examples of enthusiasm, sincerity, and sportsmanship that he set for us. In appreciation, we dedicate the 1970 Zenith to: Mr. James H. Hoppe I 5 Fore word In our quest for the attainment of peace, both in individual and world situations, our most important purpose is the creation of a path to the Truth, and leading the world out of its immediate state of confusion. We are not necessarily the chosen children; more likely concerned individuals, fortunate enough to realize that all the answers exist in this moment, in the hearts of Man. Yet, for the answers to be meaningful, we must strive to realize what questions must be asked. And upon finding those ques- tions we can create the right and good causes, and we will inevitably find, along with the right questions, the effects of our good causes. Because we as a part of Mankind contain the Universe, we contain the future; thus we contain both the questions and the answers. And as we realize the questions, we will realize Life.. .for Life is the answer. Scott Lax, Student Council President For the graduate of the class of 1970 the new decade offers chal- lenges greater than ever before. The challenge of conquering space, disease, and the prejudices compromising unity of man is the impetus to resolve the injustices and the errors of the past decade. The spirit of redress is present; the talent, in- herent. The challenge can, must, and will be met. Harold Loesch, President of C.F.T.A. As you enter the decade of the seventies I covet for you true happiness--happiness which comes from developing a sense of purpose as an individual and a sense of unity with your fellowman. In seeking this goal, I urge you to develop a strong sense of loyalty to the highest hu- man values. As you are loyal to values, you will gain respect for yourself and for all persons, even those who may differ with you on specific issues. The problems facing us in the next decade can--in my judgement --only be solved in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and trust which is based on a loyalty to agreed common values. William A. Hunter, Principal of C. F.H. S. All generations have had wars to fight. My father's generation fought a war to end all wars. My generation refought the same war. Now this generation must fight the wars of human rights, of pollution, of hunger, of poverty, of overpopulation, of equal educational opportunities, and of finally ending all wars. Our hope is with you. Warren F. Thomas, Superintendent of Schools To the Graduating Class of 1970, I recommend that each of you continually establish attainable goals and develop the ENTHUSIASM necessary for achievement. Keep in mind that your inherent rights do not transcend the rights of others and your influence on the coming decade can be a substantial contribution to the progress of society. J. Frederick Laderer, Mayor of Chagrin Falls 6 The future is yours. That is what com- mencement speakers so often say, and, unfortunately, all that they usually truly mean is that you are young and that you are inheriting a generally prosperous society and a society which in America has offered more opportunities to more different kinds of people than any other society in history. Which is true, so far as it goes. I would add this, however: That the future is yours also in the sense that you will have an unprecedented chance to perfect the American dream-to right the wrongs, to redress the grievances which still exist, to improve greatly upon the rich heritage that is yours. And I would suggest that you make it a matter of commitment and career to use this op- portunity which will be yours. Do not defend the status quo. Rather, move on from appreciation of the oppor- tunities which have been afforded you to an action role in enlarging opportunities for those who will follow you. Carl B. Stokes Mayor of Cleveland Every decade gives us the chance to do things we could not do in the preceeding 10 years. The wisdom and energy with which we use these opportunities deter- mines the quality of the decade mea - sured against the perspective of history. The student moving on to a college or university in the 1970's will find that most institutions of higher learning will encourage him to concern himself with those things we call the 'Quality of Live' --life in the city, the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink, and our ability to live in peace in the neigh- borhoood, the city, the country and the world. But it is the student and not his college or university who ultimatley de- termines how history will view the dec - ade in terms of opportunities used and opportunities ignored. Robert W. Morse, President Case Western Reserve University With your help, the seventies can become the Decade of Solution-solutions to the problems of securing lasting peace; of providing opportunities for all Americans to develop their talents and skills; of building a sound economy in which all citizens will have equal opportunity to prosper; of saving our physical envir- onment from destruction by pollutants, and, of preserving and perfecting our system of justice and individual freedom under the Constitution. The challenge is there. I know you are more than equal to it. William E. Minshall, Congressman of the 23rd District The young men and women who are graduating from Chagrin Falls High School will assume positions of responsibility in our society within the next decade. Tremendous opportunities and obligations await you. Those in my generation can only hope that those who are now becoming part of the electorate for the first time will seek to build a society based on understanding and love rather than upon fear and hate. Stephen M. Young, United States Senator The challenge confronting our generation in the 70's is not to play any specific role, but to search for a meaningful role to play... Forbes says, No man can fight his way to the top and stay at the top without exercising the fullest measure of grit, courage, determina- tion, and resolution. Every man who gets anywhere does so because he has first firmly resolved to progress in the world and then has enough stick-to-it-tiveness to transform his resolution into reality. Without resolution, no man can win any worthwhile place among his fellow man. Mr. Forbes has expressed exactly what football and all other competi- tive sports instill in young men. They resolve that they want to excel, then they constantly try to improve their position through hard work and following their teachers (coaches) instructions. Football has provided this for me as other competitive sports have done for others, e.g. Jesse Owens and track. It makes us capable of meeting all of life's situations with the same determination that we have when we attack the running back or the 100 yard dash. The best of luck. 31 --Jim Houston ROW 1-M. Indeed, Alan McDonald was a rare person. He didn't try to impress anyone with boastful statements or remarks. Instead, he allowed his talents to speak for themselves. Athletically, his abilities in baseball, track, basketball and tennis were insurmountable. He started Chagrin's first tennis team and coached them to their present dynasty of three league championships in the past four years. Profession- ally, his talents were clearly exemplified by his variety of skills as a teacher of both Latin and Mathematics. He was a humorous and intelligent individual for whom many had great respect. Therefore, the 1970 Zenith staff dedicates this page to honor the memory of Mr. Alan McDonald. 160
