DEDICATION Occasionally in the course of compulsory education, a student encounters a teacher who brings life and meaning into learning. Learning then ceases to be a process of fact assimilation, and becomes an awakening to a glowing, vital, ebullient world ex- isting all around us. With an open mind, a bright sense of humor, a recognition and respect for each student as an individual, all reinforced by a sound knowledge of sub- ject matter, this rare teacher can instill in her student a consciousness of the com- plex wonders to be discovered in the pursuit of education. Through her contagious ex- uberance in communication of the endless significance of the humanities in and out of the classroom, such a teacher has presented herself to us.
