In its pictures you will relive your loyalties to teachers, classmates, and administration. In its dedication you have honored a man whose pleasure was to serve the entire Student Body. Your participation in school organizations has made you more aware of your service to your school and community. You will remember the enthusiasm of school spirit that enabled your teams to be victorious in all of our wonderful athletic programs. ' 1 2 CLASS 0F 1.957 Quickly, you will recall how you marveled at the talent of your fellow classmates as the memories of class assemblies and plays unfold. Faintly, then more profoundly, drifts in the melodious music of all the dances, Christmas Formal, junior-Senior Prom and the Spring Formal. As you leave Chaffey you will always possess the remembrance of the best four years of your life. As you have shared these years you have been young, eager and friendly-again Chaffy at its best. Besides the usual jobs such as Father-Daughter Banquet, Mother-Daughter Banquet, Backwards Week and many more. this year's cabinet has been hostesses for the Girls' League Convention, and a new project of Girl of the Month, which proved to be very successful. To those who participate in the production of the Fasti, this ex- perience is regarded as one of the most worthwhile opportunities that high school offers. Thanks to the work of these 16 students and their advisor, this book of memories is with you now. The play struck a note of realism since many of the graduating seniors will be faced with the same problems that the main characters, Liz Erickson, Becky Stone, and Ad Swanson, had to face. This problem was the question of acceptance and then fitting into active sorority life. Becoming one of the girls at Queens was much more of a problem than they had anticipated. They not only had to adjust their physical appearances to suit the taste of the Queens, but also they had to Hello, Elizabeth M Oh, you mean like this? These ideals then had to be replaced with the importance of social posi- tion and material wealth. Although the girls were momentarily taken in by the glamour of the new setting, they soon came to realize that they could never be happy associating with a sorority that placed social prominence above personal in- dividuality and integrity. The play offered all a valuable personal experience and gave us an example of not only a fine play, but also skillful and enjoy- able interpretation. You mean, you'd rather have this grease-monkey? Play for 1957 was DINO, the story of a boy's struggle against his environ- ment, and the race of society to keep him from becoming a criminal. Balancing his bad home influence was the warm understanding of an over- worked case worker in the settlement house, and the shy young girl who found the good qualities in Dino, and reached them. It was a hu- man, sometimes pathetic, sometimes funny story of home, society, unselfishness, and youth, enriched with the things that renew one's faith in people. X - Tile E Ll L Story In the year 191 1, Ontario High School underwent a name change to Chaffey High School. Since that date, forty-six years ago, Chaffey has enjoyed a long and memorable membership in the oldest organized league in Southern California. At that time the membership of schools in the Citrus Belt League were Chalfey, Riverside, Redlands, San Bernardino, and Pomona. This league has increased in its membership through the years until now it has reached its maximum capacity. It is this condition that has caused Chaffey and Pomona High School to with- draw from the C.B.L. and join with four other high schools to form what will be known as the Montview League. In the new league Chaffey and Pomona High School will compete with Baldwin Park, Covina, West Covina, and La Puente. As the newest league in this area it is certain to become one that will be rich with tradition as the years go by. During the past forty-six years Chaffey has experienced many moments of joy and times of disappointment which will never be forgotten. Chaffey has worked hard in the C.B.L. and as a result has taken its share of honors in all sports. The number of championships, ties, and second places won by our teams are listed below. In winning Chaffey again maintained its mastery over varsity athletic teams from Fontana. With 27 seconds left to go in the game, with the score in Chaffey's favor 55-55, Winstcxn Dean hit 2 charity shots. as the Steelers were pressing for the ball. Then Larry Maxie hit a pair of charity shots, followed by a beautiful corner jump-shot by Dean as the buzzer sounded. Co-captain Bob Litwiller and Vernon Pritchett shared scoring honors with 10 points apiece. At their next meeting. the jinx of three-years standing came back as Fontana High again collapsed in the late going to enable the Chaffey Varsity to register a 59-54 win. Fontana led, until with 4 minutes left in the third quarter, Vernon Pritchett knotted the count at 58-58 with an arching jump-shot. Fontana played a close game right down to the final seconds but it was Chaffey's supremacy at the free throw line which spelled the difference. ln the scoring column, Dick Pocock again led with 19 points. 16 of these coming from field goals. john Bradshaw Bob Brown Monty C un gham 5? liedlandv 3.9 41 Ulzaffey 53 In the first round of play, Redlands High School pre- vailed over a host Chaffey High Team to walk away with a 52-41 Citrus Belt League win. Free throws kept the host Tigers in the game at the start but it was the failure of these same Tigers to convert their chances in the late stages that enabled the Terriers to pull away. Dick Pocock was the high scorer for the second straight game, hitting 6 field goals for 12 points. The second round of play proved a different story. With Winsttmn Dean turning in his finest performance of the season, Chaffey High School moved into the first division of the CBL race by trouncing Redlands 52-59. After a slow start the tigers grabbed the lead in the second quarter and the Terriers never again came close. Winsttxn Dean was high scorer for Chaffey with 18 points, 12 coming from field goals. Larry Maxie also showed his ability by hauling in a big percentage of rebounds. 42 6011011 62 Ullaffzgy 4 ln its second outing against Citrus Belt League Schools, Yellow- the hnal the poor team ac- held the cut loose for ten straight points. High-scoring honors for Chaffey went to Co-Captain W'inston Dean with 12 points. In their second meeting. the Colton Yellowjackets again handed a defeat to the Chaffey team by a score of 62-47. Coach Bob Spencer's charges had a 7-6 lead after 4 min- utes of the first period. but four field goals and a pair of free throws enabled the Yellowjackets to take a I6-9 lead at the first quarter. Colton quickly raced to a 29-ll lead when the Tigers presented them with the ball five straight time on bad passes. From that time on the Tigers couldn't close the gap. Dick Pocock gained scoring honors the Chaffey Tigers were downed by the Colton jackets 42-54. The game was closer than belies score. A key factor in Chaffey's downfall was performance at the free throw line where the counted for just 12 out of Z7 chances. Chaffey lead with 2 minutes remaining but then Colton for the hosts with 10 points. Richard Hemsley Darryl Hunter Dwight Hurst 29 Pnmona 3 49 Ulzaffey 37 In their first meeting, the Chaffey High Tigers proved too much to handle as they registered a surprising 49-29 win over Pomona. Spurred by a IU point effort by Vernon Pritchett in the first half the Tigers were never behind. Dick Pocock started shooting accurately in the last half to allow Chaffey to retain its commanding advantage. In addition to his 16 points, Pritchett led in rebounding with ll. The second game between these two rivals proved a heartbreaker to the luckless Tigers. An unerring two- handed jump-shot by center Paul Smith with seven sec- onds to go enabled Pomona High to come from behind and score a 58-57 win over Chaffey. The game was tied seven times. with Pomona having the advantage six times and Chaffey on top on three different occasions. Bob Litwiller turned in his finest performance by leading the Tiger scoring with a personal high of I4 points. 15201770 46 John Low 52 San Bernardlklo 45 47 Uhalfey 43 ln the hrst round of play, San Bernardino's taller team held off a last quarter surge by the Tigers to overcome Chaffey 52-47. With the clock showing 42 seconds left to play, the score 49-47, the San Bernardino Cardinals regrouped their forces and the hard-pressing Tigers were unable to regain possession of the ball. Bob Litwiller and Vernon Pritchett led Chaffey in scoring with ll and l0 points respectively. At their second meeting in San Bernardino, another set- back was handed to the hard-fighting Tigers. With 28 sec- onds of regulation time remaining, Bob Litwiller drove in and tied the score 45-45, sending the game into over- time. With neither team scoring in the first session, a sudden-death overtime went into effect. In this fatal frame the Tigers never had a chance. The tossup again went to the Cardinals and a bank-shot by Ted Carpenter gave the win to San Bernardino. Larry Maxie led the way in re- bounds and in the scoring column with I4 points. Larry Maxie Mick Mehas Ullaffey 65 In the first round game with the Pacific Pirates, with seconds left to play, Larry Maxie hit a beautiful hook to put the Tigers ahead 48-47. However, the Pacific adher- ents claimed it was their victory as the time had run out before Maxiels shot. The timers could not verify either case due to the fact that they could not hear the final buzzer because of the enthusiastic yelling of the backers of both teams. As no decision could be reached on who had won the game, the officials finally agreed that the game would not be counted in league play. In their second encounter, the Chaffey High School Tigers tromped the visiting Pirates 65-46. Larry Maxie again proved to be the hero, scoring I5 points. Chaffeyls all-around performance in this game was superb. With Winston Dean playing marvelous defensive ball, the out- standing play-making of Bob Litwiller, and the rebound- ing of Vernon Pritchett, the Tiger team maintained their position in the upper division of the league. Dick Pocock shared the scoring honors with Maxie also hitting for 15 points. 57MWwMk45 AVHMMW57 In the hrst meeting of these two ancient rivals, the River- side Poly Bears prevailed, 57-40. During this game 60 infractions were called by the officials. Although 97 points were recorded in the game there were only 20 field goals. Surprising Riverside raced to a 9-0 lead before Chaffey could get a point. The nearest the Tigers team came was when it pulled up within six points at 25-19. Dick Pocock led the scoring with 19 points. In one of its best performances of the season. an in- spired Chaffey Tiger basketball squad closed out its Citrus Belt League career with a revenge 57-45 win over the Riverside Poly Bears. Coach Bob Spencer's crew quickly erupted to a 25-12 lead during the second quarter and Riverside never again threatened. Winston Dean led Chaf- fey with 14 points, becoming the fourth Tiger to go over the 100 point mark in CBL outings this season. 1 or Dick Pocock Vernon Pritchett Ben Van Alstine I O f I I .
