E rnest Rehnstrand l 4 1 i Forward We would like you to meet a new friend-The Celestial Tiger. He will escort you on a journey through his own land. As you begin your trip, it may look strange. You may get lost in the clouds or bump into a golden pillar, but as you continue, perhaps you will find some familiar landmarks. Then you will recognize this land as the school year 'I955-1956. At the end of your iourney back through the year, we hope you will recall it with pride, and agree with Us that IT'S HEAVENLYK' 2 Acfmzhzkfralzbn page 6 Claws page I 7 Aclz'vzZzZ'5 page 83 ,I ' SPM W 143 ,1AQ4 A f :Af. During his nine years here, he has given not only his time, but something of him- self to those who have known him. His inspirational leader- ship has been an example for us to follow. lt is with a feel- ing of pride that the 1956 Fasti Stalt dedicates their book to Mr. William Simonsen. When aII is done, say not my day is o'er, And that through night I seek a dimmer shorep Say rather that my morn has just begun, I greet the dawn and not the setting sun, when all is done. -Paul Laurence Dunbar MR. We can remember how it seemed an eternity before that day would arrive. Now that it is here, this eternity seems to have diminished into a few short days filled with a host of heavenly activities. The Masquerade Ball where the crowning of the 1956 Football Queen took place, the Senior Tea, Good News, the l956 Senior Play, the annual Senior Pie Sale, the Senior Assembly, the Spring Formal, Pre- lude to Summer , the Senior Breakfast, Senior Play- day, and the Commencement Exercises are but a few of the activities that helped to make our final year in high school one that we will never forget. But the one day that every senior will remember most of all is Graduation Day itself-June 8, 1956. We all may be up in the clouds at one time or another on that day, but as we take our turn to walk across the platform and accept our diploma, we come to the realization that it is time to come down to earth , for this day marks the beginning of a whole new life. A Newcomers' Party at the beginning of each semester gave all new girls a chance to meet each other. The Father -Daughter and Mother-Daughter Banquets were enioyed by all who attended them. During the very successful Christmas Welfare Drive, nearly 51,000 was collected to be used to help out needy Chaffey Students. Another success- ful event was Backwards Week with its many activities, which was climaxed by the big Backwards Dance. 87 seg is ,Q W, ., X E if if a 1,43 1 'Hx , 1--V I if Mm! During the past year, lnter-Club Council has en- deavored to clo for the clubs only what they could not do for themselves. Its main purpose is to enable the clubs on campus to have a voice in decisions made by the Student Council. It has coordinated the activi- ties of clubs concerning football season, basketball season, campus clean-up, campus discipline and other school-wide functions which concern clubs. Moreover, it has discussed and helped solve many problems fac- ing clubs and the student body. School Servzbe Inter' Club Counczl 98 Pf Row 1. Oraheslm J The Chaftey Symphony Orchestra is a group of which the Chaffey students are iustly proud. Composed of talented peo- ple and directed by a very capable conductor, Mr. John Feeney, it has contributed a great deal to campus life. This year the Orchestra has given a total of ten concerts, which sets an enviable record for a high school group. A distinct honor came to Chaffey through the Orchestra when tive of its members were invited to take part in the All-Califor- nia High School Symphony Orchestra in Santa Barbara this spring. These five are to be congratulated for their fine work. Row l. Saundra Batson, Jeanie Rohrbaugh Row 2. Keith Johns, Roger Vogler, Chuck Harris This year's band has every reason to be proud of itself for its fine performances in 1955-1956. Directed by Mr. Robert Jones, it has played for every football game, and exhibited some excellent precision marching at many of them. A smaller group of band members made up a pep organization which performed at the rallies and the basketball games. The Chaffey Band has given several concerts this year and participated in music festivals. The school was excellently represented by the band at the Long Beach Marching Band Festival, where they received a score of 96.6 out of a possible 'IO0 points. Mr. Jones and his talented band members closed an exception- ally active year by furnishing music for graduation. The mem- bers compete with each other as well as with other schools. This year they have taken part in the Citrus Belt League Speech Tournament, the Redlands University Tournament, and the National Forensic League Tournament. Competitions which are confined to Chaftey are the Mask and Gavel Contest, the Podrasnik and Richardson competitions, and the Cromby Allen Oratorical contest. Students also participated in the state--wide American Legion and Lions Club oratorical contests. The Debate Team is perhaps the most active part of the Speech Department. The Senior Play was directed this year by Lee Day. Entitled Good News the story centers around the plight of the senior football hero who flunked astronomy. He is in danger of ineligibility for the final game which would probably mean a maior defeat for the school. His girlfriend has a brilliant Qfemalel cousin who helps him study for the make-up exam. Playing in the Pasadena Rose Bowl, the Tigers drew first blood late in the first quarter on a drive set up by an intercepted pass. The conversion attempt was no good. Glendale came back in the second quarter for seven points to lead, 7-6, at the half. In the third quarter with six minutes to go the Tigers climaxed a 65-yard drive with a touchdown and conversion to lead 13-6. However, with only two minutes to go in the game Glendale would not give up and scored on a third down pass that sailed over Tiger heads into the end zone. A fumble sentenced final doom on the Tigers as they went clown to a respectable 14-13 defeat. Berdoo When 6'2 Dick Forman missed the open- ing shot in the first round with Berdoo, it was as if the whole team was a lid over the basket. Along with inconsistent officiating and a lopsided 21-2 first quarter score, Chaffey lost 60-58. Seeking well-deserved revenge, the Tigers tramped the Cardinals 55-97 in the second round due to the re- bounding ability of Terry Cain with the high scoring of Dick Forman and Gerry Snider. ln the C.B.L. playoff the Tigers tramped Cardinal City once again 43-38 with Jim Davidson playing great defensive. Larry Maxie Terry Cain Cfmjjfey 115. Pacwb Due to the unusual playing ot the Pacific team in general, and Loose Lloyd Lewis in specific, Chaftey had a real tussle in the first round. However, due to the clutch play- ing of Hal RenilT, Terry Cain, and Winston Dean, the Bengals came through in the last 1:40 of the game to win 41-35. In the second round, Center Dick Forman scored a seasonal high of 27 points-revenge for a seasonal low of 2 points in the first round. In both trays with Riverside, Chaf- tey, a well-knit team, played an inspired brand of ball. The first round came to a 50-44 decision, and the second round a nerve racking 5'l-50. In both games Hal Renift, famous for his deceptive passes, scored in double figures along with Snider and Forman. Dwight Hurst Chajky V5. Fonlarm The Fontana Steelers, who have never won a game in any sport against Chaffey, almost broke the age-old iinx. With just six seconds to go in regulation time, guard Hal Reniff arched the ball through the net and tied the score. In the controversial overtime, Chaffey scored 8 points to win 47-43 as the buzzer sounded. Chajfy VJ. Pomona In the first round of play, Coach Bob Spencer's Tigers were never more than 2 points ahead of the persistent Pomona team. The Tigers suffered a 44-40 loss. But the second game was an entirely different story. Once again, center Dick Forman hit for 27 points before a near-capacity crowd. Before the first quarter had ended, the Tigers were out in front 20-5, and the final score showed a rout of 67-38. In the rebound department, Terry Cain scored 15, Jim Davidson 9, Reniff, Snider, and Larry Moxie 3 each, Pritchett had 2, and Jared Crowley got 1. Bill Burni- son added l point to the score. Chajfey w. Collon After trailing by as much as 15 points in the first half, Chaffey rallied to a thrilling 52-47 win over Colton thus averaging a loss in an earlier clash at the Chino Invitational. Big gun for Chaftey was Gerry Snider who erupted with 21 points to take game honors once again. Center Dick Forman found the range and contributed with 16 points while Reniff put through 5 swishers for 10 points and guard Bob Litwiller netted 5 points for his evening's work. Seeking revenge, the Col- ton team took the second round 68-56. The loss made necessary a C.B.L. playoff between Chaffey and San Berdoo which Chaffey won 43-38. As a result, the Tigers traveled to Mt. SAC gym to compete in C.I.F. playoffs in which Chaftey lost to Long Beach Wilson, 68-35. Chajky 115. Fontana Reason for the controversial overtime, was a mid-court shot by Fontana that went through the hoop lust after the buzzer sounded. Fohi Steelers thinking they had won were greatly disappointed when they found the victory shot was a little late.
